I passed my viva! Hurrah!

Ahem, sorry for the self-aggrandisement, but I'm still quite excited about this, more than I expected to be in fact.

That's all, anyway. I will be having celebratory drinks when I return to London (ie beginning of August).

thanks everyone. durham is treating me quite well, mostly by keeping me so busy (it's basically maths from 9-7 every day) that i probably won't even see the city centre until sunday.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't see this. So well done you even though you told me on the phone.

People: what he's not telling you is that the thesis evaluator types also said that Toby's work was technically very impressive and they don't think they will see the like for several years.

I'm so proud of you, x.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

People: what he's not telling you is that the thesis evaluator types also said that Toby's work was technically very impressive and they don't think they will see the like for several years.

rather embarassingly what they actually said was that they thought they were unlikely to ever see such a technically impressive thesis again. ahem. they did also say that it was disappointingly badly written though (which is true).

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

and thanks for the congratulations everyone, it's quite weird because almost everyone here in durham already has a phd, so it's nice to be reminded that this is actually quite a good thing to have.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

What does technically impressive mean? Can you tell us a bit more about what you've done?

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

they did also say that it was disappointingly badly written though

doctors' handwriting, etc.

congratulations, toby!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you tell us a bit more about what you've done?

Ha!

I am often left feeling like a 50's housewife.
Me: How was work?
Toby: Oh you know, Tom made some bizarre joke and then I spent most of the afternoon working on a paper with Kevin.
Me: What on? [Uh oh, say the audience]
Toby: Well it's looking at log stats and shimura curves and how they relate to a mode [Charlie Brown's teacher noises] we had a problem with [may as well be speaking Hungarian] but I think it's going to be okay.
Me: That's nice honey.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

c) Interest in the long run
( d)would have been funding but the other three should have sorted that out).
