How does google rank web pages?

So I've been having a look at this but I'm a little confused as to what is meant exactly by 'Link Popoularity'

Does this mean that
a)the more people that link to your site, the higher it will be ranked
b)The mor elinks your site has the higher it will be ranked.
c)The more traffic your site gets the higher it will be ranked.

Google has a sophisticated algorhythm system which has numerous factors in deciding page rank.

google's algorithms assess the 'value' of your site's inbound links. so in theory it's better to have a handful of links from big, useful, respectable sites, rather than millions of links from your mates and dodgy link-farm type places.

linds from messageboards probably don't count for much.

I'd imagine ILX links matter a lot since the pages have lots of relevent text and it has a high page rank ....

ILX links are not particularly high, mainly due to individual threads/ pages

ILXOR homepage is ranking at Page Rank 5

the new Answers pages for ILM/ ILE only have moderate number of backlinks.
