I'm moving to Philadelphia in September to attend Drexel. Any tips on good neighborhoods, where to live, how to find an apartment? Close to campus would be good. How is Drexel anyway?

I think there's some info about Philly on the thread about me and Sarah moving (search for Nick Sarah move new city or something like that). The only advice I can give is go get brunch at Astral Plane. It was really really good.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been a long time since I lived around Philly, but I seem to recall the neighborhoods right around Penn/Drexel to be kind of sketchy. Fortunately, the city is small enough that no spot is really too far out of the way. My sis goes to Penn and she lives in Northern Liberties, whose gentrification is accelerating. Might be a nice place to look, though.

Other option: seek out the Real World house and move next door. You can be the guy who gets busted for stealing cable!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I happened upon that Real World house when I was there a couple weekends ago. Yeesh.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Look in West Philly. There are still some good rents there. And you wouldn't be far from Drexel. Drexel is cool. Cool radio station and T.V. station too. You should know that college students looking for good spots to live start looking now. Or even before now for September. Not that you won't find something, but it has gotten harder to find a decent spot.

West Philly has really come a long way too. Great African food! And the anarchists will play punk rock for you.

if you're going to attend drexel, definately check west philly. [i live here, fyi] rent is cheap for students and penntrification has made the area nice.

Pick up a copy of the Philadelphia Weekly, for the best Philadelphia apartment listings I know in print.

It's pretty much too late now. This is the first time I've seen this thread. I hope you, original poster, found one of the other threads and found an apartment and so forth.

yeah, the PW has great listings. the best kept secret though, are the upenn newsgroups. thats how i found my new place.

Boycott Yuengling Beer Products
From Daniel Grace, Secretary-Treasurer, Teamsters Local 830

http://phillyunions.com/teamsters830/

The Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters has announced that it supports
Teamsters Local 830 in its efforts to protect its members' jobs and
officially endorses Local 830's boycott of Yuengling products.

SITUATION:

On March 9, 2006, D.G. Yuengling & Son withdrew union recognition,
declaring it would no longer continue negotiating with Teamsters Local 830
Mgmt. Yet, the contract between Teamsters Local No. 830 and D.G. Yuengling
& Son did not expire until March 31, 2006. By these actions D.G. Yuengling
& Son is jeopardizing the working standards, conditions and livelihoods of
many hard-working Local 830 workers whose efforts and dedication have
helped this local company achieve the national acclaim and success they
now enjoy.

Several attempts by Local 830 management to resume good faith negotiations
in hopes of coming to a fair and amicable agreement have been spurned by
the beverage manufacturer.

Local 830 has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board, which
are pending.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

1) In support of those local 830 workers whose livelihoods are now in
jeopardy because of this very serious situation, the Pennsylvania
Conference of Teamsters is urging Philadelphia area union members, their
families and supporters, as well as local tavern owners and liquor
licensed establishments and all those who patronize these establishments,
NOT TO PURCHASE the following Yuengling brands until further notice:
Yuengling Premium Beer, Yuengling Light, Lord Chesterfield Ale, Dark
Brewed Porter, Traditional Lager, Light Lager, and Original Black & Tan.

2) Local 830 urges you to contact D.G. Yuengling & Son at the address
and/or phone number below and express your support for the workers of
Teamsters Local 830. Let them know you will not purchase or consume their
products until they resume good faith negotiations with the Local,
recognize the union, and demonstrate their willingness to maintain fair
working conditions, wages and standards.

Yuengling Brewery
5th & Mahantongo Streets
Pottsville, PA 17901
(570) 622-4141

Additional information is available on the company web site at
http://www.yuengling.com/contact.htm.

3) FORWARD THIS MESSAGE to your fellow union members, family, friends,
local taverns and liquor establishments, etc. and ask them to boycott
Yuengling products and support Local 830 as well.

We thank you very much for your support!

I'M STILL HOMELESS FUCKERS!!!

NYCNative, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

a friend of mine is selling a house in italian market, about a block from pat's. move there.

hstencil, Thursday, 10 May 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

No, but I do want to say: Go Michael Nutter!

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 10 May 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

what sort of situation are you looking for? where is your job?

btw, i grew up here and have been living here for the past 5 months after leaving school for bit. all i can say is that this city is fucked up (drugs & homicides), has an outrageously bad music scene for a city of its size, yet has this weird charm to it. everything is so spread out that it's totally fun to actually explore.

a few classics off the top of my head:
- a night of bourgeois beer-drinkin at Monk's. remember to bring at least $60.
- the wissahickon park in the northwestern area of the city (germantown, mt. airy, chestnut hill, etc)
- all the cool abandoned boats on the river. so sweet to look at.
- the gayborhood late at night. more outrageous tranny hookers per block than any other place i've been.

there's more. i'll be back.

at the end of the day, tho, i'm glad i grew up here, and am glad i am getting the fuck out of this shithole.

the table is the table, Thursday, 10 May 2007 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

more classics:
- Critter & Guittari on Indian Queen Lane in East Falls
- the giant vietnamese shopping center on washington ave.
- the spicy pumpkin soup at My Thai. has shredded, red-hot chicken on top, with lots of lemongrass. sooo fucking good.

the table is the table, Thursday, 10 May 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

for records it depends on what you're into. AKA (lots of everything, but especially great psych/prog/avant shit), 611 (dance) and Philadelphia Record Exchange (used) are the best in their areas for the city.

there are shitloads of good independent bookstores. one that is catty-corner to eastern state penitentiary (also awesome) has everything you'd want of used books for pretty cheap. joseph fox on sansom is good for new and more literary stuff, as is robin's. big jar has a lot of stuff, but quality is sort of spotty.

I really like West Philly whenever I visit friends there - beautiful houses, great park(s?), good Ethiopian and West African food.

the spicy pumpkin soup at My Thai. has shredded, red-hot chicken on top, with lots of lemongrass. sooo fucking good.

This I need to investigate. I haven't been down to My Thai in years.

the end of the day, tho, i'm glad i grew up here, and am glad i am getting the fuck out of this shithole.

I didn't exactly grow up in Philadelphia (well, I partly did), but I too feel really glad to think I'll probably be getting out of here soon, even though I'm more than happy to talk about the city's good points.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 10 May 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

The mayor' race (primary, but that pretty much is the mayor's race in this case) is pretty interesting this time around: five Democratic candidates. Race is still obviously a factor, but it's playing out in a much more complicated way, with lots of white voters supporting Nutter, and lots of black voters supporting Knox (while Fattah recently took a swipe at Nutter, seeming to imply he was not black enough, etc.).

Is it only available at lunch?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 10 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

I really am that interested, because I have a thing for pumpkin soups.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 10 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

i had it at dinner.

the table is the table, Thursday, 10 May 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

This is the worst time of year to find an apartment -- students moving, etc. You might want to look into subletting for the summer. That way you'll have a place on the short term and get a sense of the city before dropping the cash on a lease.

I found my place (in West Philly) through the Usenet newsgroups associated with Penn and my previous dwellings through friends.

theoreticalgirl, Friday, 11 May 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

if you want to live in port fishington (yay murders and the best heroin in philly on your corner...erm), my friend's boyfriend owns a house there with an extra room. it's a big house, with lots of space, but he is kind of wacky. examples: he heats the three floors using a complicated system of woodburning stoves. he smokes 20+ handrolleds a day. he bathes rarely. he goes to home depot right before it closes all the time because he's a neurotic hoarder and a welder. by the same token, he drinks good wine, makes good food, and smokes great ganj. also makes some beautiful sculptural pieces, and knows a pretty good amount about art.

uh, yeah. if you want a temporary place (very cheap), i might be able to hook you up.

Penn sends alert alleging crimes by kids as young as 9
By GLORIA CAMPISI
camp✧✧✧@phillyn✧✧✧.c✧✧ 215-854-5935

Groups of youths as young as 9 have been harassing, assaulting and robbing students, staff and residents on the University of Pennsylvania campus, a school official said yesterday.
Karima Zedan, director of academic & external affairs for Penn's division of public safety, said an alert had been issued about six incidents involving separate groups of youths beginning July 3.

Philadelphia police last night said that groups of youths had committed 10 assaults and some robberies on the Penn campus between June 9 and July 7.

The incidents listed in Penn's alert took place between 4:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., in these areas: 33rd and Chestnut streets, Locust Street near 40th and near 42nd, and Locust Walk near 37th Street.

A similar incident also occurred at 35th and Spring Garden streets, in the vicinity of Drexel University, the alert said.

The youths involved were all male, up to 13 years old, and walked the campus area in groups of three to eight, according to the alert, which was issued late last week.

Two youths have been arrested in connection with one of the incidents, on Locust Street near 42nd.

Patrols have been stepped up in the area, including covert operations, and security cameras were being monitored. City police and safety personnel from the University City District also are involved in the investigation.

The university began installing more closed-circuit cameras and emergency phones early last year, after a student was hit in the thigh by a stray bullet during an aborted robbery and a man was killed in a diner just off campus on Christmas Day 2005.

A Drexel graduate student was severely beaten by four University City High School students in January 2006 at 36th and Spring Garden streets.

i mean seriously, for all the good they've done in the area, fuck Penn. West Philly will never be a playground for spoiled racist Jewish kids, so stop fucking trying.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 04:24 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, let's just accept that groups of kids are regularly beating people up and mugging them in the area. Like it's really in Penn's interest to advertise this if it weren't serious. I've been reading story after story about these things happening lately.

I mean, I could just as easily translate your comment as: "Stay in your Center City ghetto whitey, or else you deserve to be beaten by groups of black kids with weapons!" (Not assuming you're not white, incidentally.)

I'm moving here on Friday. This thread needs updating anyway. Can someone recommend the best:

restaurants
bars
venues
record stores
museums
general things to do (sights, parks, whatever you can think of)

I've literally spent like 24 hours total in the city so I'm pretty much in the dark here.

restaurants

my fav is the pho place on 6th and washington, its the first one you see when you drive into the parking lot (on the right hand side if youre driving down 6)

don't really go to restaurants that much tbh

bars

no clue

venues

used to go to shows a lot at the first unitarian church, heard johnny brendas is good too

record stores

repo records on south street, some others on south street

museums

dunno, maybe try to go see the barnes collection before the city steals it all?

general things to do (sights, parks, whatever you can think of)

dunno

oh, I like tony luke's for sandwiches (cheesesteaks and otherwise) too

Restaurants (vegan): loving hut on south is cheap and good, new harmony on 9th is default for Chinese, HomeSlice is grebt vegan pizza, and Horizons is expensive but also te best meal you will ever have

Bars: I adore Tattooed Mom on 5th and south; it is kitschy, cozy, inexpensive, fun, all around tops. The Barbary in fishtown is also p cool. Predictable bit still fun indie dance night on Mondays seems to be the thing to do these days. El Bar in fishtown also rules

Record stores: Repo Records on 5th and south is my favorite ever. Aka music on 2nd above market is bigger and has a larger selection, but the staff at repo is way more friendly and informed and fun to talk to; it feels like *your* local record store

I also like to go to chestnut hill to see how the other half lives

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)

Venues: the tla, the trocadero, electric factory, starlight ballroom, first unitarian church basement, Johnny brenda's, Kung Fu necktie (the last 2 are also cool bars; brenda's has a killer beer selection)

R5productions.com is your friend

(Simple) (Elegant) (Stevie D), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

How is the cost of living in Philly? I'm seriously thinking about picking up sticks and moving across the river from NJ if I can convince my boss to let me do my customer service bullshit from a home-office setup. Probably won't be able to, of course, but I am sick to death of being within spitting distance of city life for the first time in years and only getting to visit as a tourist on weekends.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

Museums/etc: Phila museum of art is great, mütter museum is creepy and morbid medical oddities, Franklin institute is this kickass science museum where you are a kid again

The magic gardens on south and 10th is tiny but an absolute must-see, and also the first friday of every month is First Friday where all the galleries have openings, and you bike around and see them, and it is fun

The last drop on 13th and pine is nice for coffee too. 2 more rad bars: POPE in south Philly and north star in fairmont. Also if you dig punk/hardcore there's a really great warehouse space in north Philly called The Ox; I saw Lightning Bolt and Pissed Jeans there in June or July

Where generally did you move to?

anybody ever go to wishbone, that ridiculous, bougie "artisan fried chicken" place on 40th and walnut that plays Outkast and Gucci Mane all the time? because it is open until 3am and is byob and the upstairs seating is super chill. it's like a coffee shop, people are usually studying but you could also chill here with friends and drink whiskey and listen to rap in an environment that is not as crowded as a bar.

I read a rly hyped up review of it and was so amped; the chicken was bland, the breading was mushy and bland, and the mac and cheese had a weird dessert-like taste like too much nutmeg
