According to that site, the Clearwater, Florida neighborhood where I'll be moving next month is dominated by "Gray Power", "Urban Achievers" and "Big City Blend", which sounds nice enough (description of "Urban Achievers" nowhere near as obnoxious as the name makes them sound). N U ?

Ah, so nice: Costa Mesa, CA, gets: Money & Brains, Young Literati, American Dreams, Bohemian Mix, Young Influentials. Describes me to a T. Thank you, thank you... *goes off to polish award given for Biggest Rampaging Ego*

Newington, CT:

  • Pools & Patios
  • Young Influentials
  • New Empty Nests
  • Blue Chip Blues
  • Hispanic Mix

Translation: Suburban Yuppie Central, with a mix of inner-city demographics for flavor. Given my predilection towards the sorts of things that typify Ned's slice o' heaven, iss it any wonder I get chafed by my living conditions?

Anyone got any Bactine?

Where I live now (Ames, IA): Second City Elite, God's Country, Big Fish, Small Pond, Towns and Gowns, New Homesteaders. For some reason "Second City Elite" looks to be the most prevalent, nationwide, in eastern Iowa. This confuses me greatly.

Where I'm living in a month (St. Paul, MN): Bohemian Mix, Urban Achievers, Mid-City Mix, Towns and Gowns, Single City Blues. Hm.

can someone dig up one of these for lil' old england?

or the wilds of canada

anthony, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

For England you could always try Upmystreet.com - its a bit dry but if you scroll down far enough it will tell you how many microwaves are owned by people in your area. I live in a Partially Gentrified Multi-Ethnic Area. ITV viewing is low, but Gin consumption is high...

Pete, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yeh, been to upmystreet before, is ok

i live in a Gentrified Multi-Ethnic Area.

bizarrely, we enjoy radio commercials. who the fuck enjoys radio commercials???

gareth, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Lotta microwaves: low watchage of ITV (I'm delighted to say).

mark s, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

apparenty 'consumption of frozen ready meals is high but consumption of frozen foods like beef burgers is low' probably due to the popularity of 'Burger Bars' and above average Gaurdian and Financial Times Readership.

Ed, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Low microwaves, low ITV, low wages, high unemplyment, no cars. Sadly the whole area is entirely correctly identified as being LAND OF THE STUDENTS. Which also means it's lovely and quiet in the summer...

alex thomson, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mine's Affluent City Centre Areas, Tenements and Flats. Good news: we eat loads of fish and don't use cars or supernmarkets much. Bad news: microwaves. Not In This Flat, You Don't.

The place I lived in America when growing up has everything from rich execs to welfare recipients, but the survey claims Literati and Young Bohemians too. But then I looked at what it meant to be 'literati' by their standards and my blood ran cold.

suzy, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Urban up and comers, successful singles, bohemian mix, Hispanic mix. And something referred to as "Anomolies" which had NO EXPLANATION! Argh!

Ally, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ally is an anomoly, Ally is an anomoly.

Pete, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Maybe 'Anomolies' is a euphemism for 'Perverts'. Are there a lotta guys in trenchcoats around where you live, Ally?

Josh, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

This is where I live:

These neighbourhoods have a relatively disadvantaged population with low incomes, high unemployment, health problems and large numbers of both the very young and the old.

Sounds nice eh? Bet you lived on my street.

Steve.n., Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Just the people I work with, Josh, just the people I work with.

Ally, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ally hangs out with guys in trenchcoats.

Otie Wheeler, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Fuck me, I screwed up on that one...

Argh, I looked up the subrural nightmare where I grew up, and it's nothing but Winners Cirle, Executive Suits, Greenbelt Families, Young Influentials and Middleberg Managers.

Then I looked at the neighbourhood in Queens where I wasted my 20s and it's Urban Achievers, Old Yankee Rows, Latino America, Hispanic Mix and Inner Cities.

Don't belong in either of those demographics, so let's try the UK. What do you know, Tooting Graveney is a "Gentrified Multi-Ethnic Area". Oh, you don't say.

masonic boom, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Robes are not trenchcoats. Neither are Britney Spears t-shirts.

I do own a sort of a trenchcoat, come to think of it.

Ally, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, right, Ramon's trenchcoat phase was before your time. But he still wears it on occasion.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, I like trenchcoats, I just said I have a coat sort of like a trenchcoat, but it's wool instead of, erm, trechcoat material. Thank god he's not wearing it now, otherwise he would've put it on on the 4th in the blazing sunshine and heat. Conversation as it was with much-smaller coat went as follows:

Me: You're going to be hot. Ramon: Nah, not gonna happen. Manon: Aren't you getting hot? Ramon: No, not at all, I'm not hot. Me: Ramon, you're sweating, take off your jacket. Ramon: No, I'm not hot. Manon: You look pretty hot. Ramon: No. Listen, I'm not hot. You know, the Bedoin in Arabic countries wear layers upon layers of clothing and it accelerates the cooling down process. It's a proven fact. Manon: You still look hot. You're sweating. Me: The Bedoin wear white anyhow. You're wearing black. Totally different. Manon: Isn't he hot? Me: Yes, but he's being bloody difficult right now. Ramon: I'm not hot.

So on and so forth. The trenchcoat would've just resulted in me smacking him or something. Though without amusing refusal-to-admit- heat-index, I would've had less of an excuse to drink ridiculous amounts of daquiris and margaritas, and Ramon would've been sensible enough to not get amusing sunburn. And Manon would've missed all of that comedy anyhow. So forget it, make sure he brings the trenchcoat if we go to Miami.

Ally, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dude hey, I've been wearing the same wool pants and wool shirt for the last week. I wasn't hot at all.

Otis Wheeler, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Argh. Wearing the same clothes over and over is so disgusting I don't know where to start.

Ally, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I live in one of 'the most affluent neighbourhoods in Great Britain. They are wealthy, high status areas on the suburban/rural fringe which are found predominantly in the Home Counties, although there are enclaves in other parts of the country such as Bearsden, Milngavie and Eastwood in Glasgow and Solihull in the West Midlands.'

This explains: 1) How I can afford to waste so much time on the internet. 2)I live in an enclave? What?

Bill

Bill, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Enclaves are cool. That site said that Hampstead was an enclave. I'm down with that.

masonic boom, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Home Owners In Older Properties, Younger Workers. Large numbers of young families, many older terraced houses, medium ITV viewing, high microwave ownership, all house and flat prices below national average. My MP's changed since I last checked it, though ...

Think Big, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cor, I live in "Prosperous Enclaves, Highly Qualified Executives" which seems like a mildly odd description of my household. Apparently lots of fish and gin are consumed, very few people drive not much distance and we all read the Guardian.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

four months pass...
RickyT told me to come and find this. You are all posh tossers. SW9:

Type 53: Multi-Ethnic Estates, Severe Unemployment, Lone Parents (1 per cent of the population). Unemployment is 2.8 times higher than average. In general, they are more likely than average to be responsive to advertising (THATS ME!!). The vast majority of homes are council flats. 81% are rented from the council or a housing association and 79% are purpose built flats. The proportion of overcrowded households is 4.6 times higher than average. NO SHIT SHERLOCK says Sarah wondering what it must be like to live somewhere with a front room. By far the most popular Sunday newspaper is The News of the World, indicating that perhaps the more affluent residents of these inner city neighbourhoods are only present during the week. (fuckers!) Apparently we also eat more SOSAGE than anyone else ha hahaha. It doesn't tell me our GIN consumption though, saying that draught lagers are commonly drunk in SW9. Again, NO SHIT.

Sarah, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Where is Canada

anthony, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Multi-Occupied Town Centres, Mixed Occupations: High proportion of ppl walk to work, drink cola, eat crisps and sossage, drink GIN (yay!) and bottled lagers, go to pub more than average, walk to shops, people very dissatisfied with their standard of living. "Consumption of frozen foods is low, with the exception of fish fingers". (I have had 2 pkts of these in my freezer for months).

Tom, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You mean, you don't know, Anthony? Somewhere above that there Americkely, right? (Sorry I am a wanker but I CANNOT RESIST)

Sarah, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

RickyT was correct about the GIN and the Guardian, but not anything else.

Mine was BOTM. Apart from the fact that it said exactly the same for Battersea when we typed in Wendys postcode and Battersea is not exactly the L0ughb0rough Estate.

SE 16: Type 53: Multi-Ethnic Estates, Severe Unemployment, Lone Parents, 1 per cent of the population. And heavy ITV watching! "People here are much less likely than average to believe that a woman's place is in the home. They are not at all keen on DIY.Products consumed much more heavily by these people than average are tinned/packet soup, tinned steak, mineral water, fruit juice and sausages" Well, maybe.

I grew up with Elite Exurban Families and Small-Town Blue-Collar Families, which sounds about right.

"These are very high status, high spending urban neighbourhoods containing highly educated, affluent professional people"
