The impending loss of a job

So the supervising producer on this show I'm working on just called a meeting. He told us all about how the higher-ups had demanded that one of the editors be fired immediately and gave us all his off-the-books opinion that we were all going to be phased out sooner rather than later. He said that things going wrong with the show that we had no control over were going to be blamed on us, and he's seen it happen before, so we should all start looking for other work. He actually started tearing up, apologizing for having to tell us this, that he never intended for this to happen, and there are things he can't tell us that he's heard about that indicate he's OTM in his opinion.

There's really no question I'm asking here, just noting that I'm possibly going to be out of work very soon at a bad time of the TV year and a bad time for me personally (what with me looking to move in a month or two).

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

start calling the temp agencies, asking them if they have anything at all.

good luck, and steal as much shit as you can carry before they lock the doors.

Kingfish von Bandersnatch (Kingfish), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I've already snatched a coffee mug and the last bagel.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, Gear, that's lame.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry gear. Definitely a rough industry when it comes to job security.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

haha Nick for a second I thought you were referring to my mug thievery.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, real men drink scalding hot coffee out of their bare hands.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Think of the bright side: no more of your creepy "midget" coworker.

Otherwise, it does suck.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 22 July 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately, things like this happen. If you've got the stamina, and we all do to an extent, you will pick up the pieces and run with them. Sometimes an unexpected termination results in profound new beginnings. I hope this is your time Gear.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 22 July 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish you well mr. gear! perhaps you can go into directing, maybe a something a little b-movie in your living room. </refuses to let joke die>

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear, mate I'm so right wid you on this one, more than you know (typing this at home).

Note: the guy that gets to tell you this news is always the nicest guy in middle management, just so you don't 'lose it'.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 22 July 2004 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see my company going down the tubes in the future too (not because I'm leaving, although now I'm really glad I'm leaving), it's kind of sad to think about something I've spent so much time and energy on dying on the vine. At least I'm picking up and leaving rather than being fired or forced out, my sympathies gear. The entertainment industry is shitty like that.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Tough one dude, good luck in finding summit else!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, man. I've been there myself. I'll make you unemployment tacos when I get to LA.

j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Make sure they're koala tacos while there's still some koalas left.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck on the job front. Sell your roommate's life story to the Enquirer -- she's not using it, she'll never notice.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 22 July 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought Krispy Kremes for everyone today and that seemed to cheer people up a little bit. Although someone wondered why I only got glazed and no other types.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"oh THESE? These have the special 'Krispy Skeet Kreme Glaze'(tm) that everyone's been talking about. Try one!"

seriously, at least you were warned your job loss. when i got booted out of my engineering job, i was in shock for a few days.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry to hear that gear - the heads up is nice tho. & if the coffee mug is the biggest thing you nic before you leave i will be very dysappointed.

you also may not be alone - i'm afraid the little company i work for may become insolvent anyday now.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking around here, seeing what I can steal, and there's not much. I have this Martinelli's apple juice container, which is empty. I could fit that in my bag. A few blank VHS tapes, maybe. The head writer's collection of Absolut Vodka postcards. The grimy baseball hat the other writer always wears. A handful of HiLiters. This cheap plastic lei that was given to me on Hawaiian Day a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty sparse around here.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like you'll be spending a lot more quality time with your roomie

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Would the midget fit in your bag?

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

and the coffee machineĀ”

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously guys in a month and a half my material will dry up, what with this job being over and me moving into my own place, sans Assroomy

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

78 days left until I boot myself out of my job

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Friday night after I left work, the fellow who broke the news to us about getting fired was himself fired. There's some shady new guy in his position, I refer to him as the "Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross fellow". He hasn't yet offered us up steak knives or brought out some brass balls for effect, but it's getting there.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

PUT. THAT COFFEE. DOWN.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"FUCK YOU! That's my name."

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously has there been a movie with more emphatic swearing than 'glengarry...'? methinks not.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

subtitling tests. last week i was going for 95% error-free and got 94. today i was going for 96%, got 95.3. a career re-speaking the wisdom of sports commentators across the globe has been snatched from my brittle grasp.

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Friday, 19 September 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

Hey, j4gger, I lost a job as a subtitler 3 years ago (in Australia). We had people in each capital city, and the people in Brisbane or Canberra (I forget which) suddenly left, set up their own company and underbid everybody else, leaving the rest of us out of a job.The positive was I moved on, am no longer a subtitler, and am much happier.

James Morrison, Friday, 19 September 2008 02:45 (seventeen years ago)

...and now yr a West Bromwich Albion footballer AND a rly irritating singer-songwriter, all at once

J4gger Dynamic Pentangle (Just got offed), Friday, 19 September 2008 02:49 (seventeen years ago)

Hey James, just as an aside, sorry to derail: was it ess bee ess you worked for and if do did you ever work with/know a H3nry Barr1ngton who did subtitles/translation work?

Trayce, Friday, 19 September 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, Trayce, I was at the ABC. We envied those ess bee ess guys: they earned a LOT more than us.

James Morrison, Friday, 19 September 2008 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

were the underbidders see ess aye?

King Boy Patio (sic), Friday, 19 September 2008 07:20 (seventeen years ago)

Bright Future (sunny successor), Friday, 19 September 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

Jaq, Friday, 19 September 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

I can't remember who they were now. Or is this a joke I don't get? I'm a bit drunk.

James Morrison, Saturday, 20 September 2008 02:58 (seventeen years ago)

I'm way drynk! no joke tho,.

King Boy Patio (sic), Saturday, 20 September 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

KBP, we should test how drynk you are. How many fingers am I holding up?

Aimless, Saturday, 20 September 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Hey! What's that on your tie?

Aimless, Saturday, 20 September 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

I'll give you a dollar if you can lick your elbow.

Aimless, Saturday, 20 September 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

Damn Louis, I feel bad about Facebooking you to roffle at the automatic subtitling on Sky News that informed me of the suspension of Met Police Commander Marcel Desailly now. Hope it works out okay.
