Taking sides: Gary Bushell vs. Richard Littlejohn vs. James Whale

James Whale is the least loathsome by far. In fact, I'm not aware of anything he's supposed to have done wrong. At least his late night TV programme attempted to promote serious discussion as opposed to tabloid bigotry.

It was a valiant attempt that was inevitably doomed to failure, appearing as it did in the pub kicking out time slot.

Still, the smooth manner with which he ejected a paraltyic Wayne Hussey from the studio still remains one of my favourite TV moments.

bushell has a ton of jealousy-compensation issues (what kind of ninny a. boasts abt being in mensa; b. whines when he is dumped as gag writer for BRIAN CONLEY!!¡¡?¿); whale = timmie mallett with a snarky phone manner

GAH! I have to walk past Bushell's stupid FACE most days because there's an Indian restaurant round the corner which according to the Sun is the bestest in the country or something and they have a big poster in the window with Bushell's FACE on it. Remarkably, they haven't gone out of business yet!

Littlejohn is far nastier, though that Nicky Campell thing with him and Will Self was CLASS.

Sadly, the Tories' regain of three seats in East London / Essex while slipping further back in the shires would suggest that Sun Toryism (i.e. Littlejohn) is holding up better than Telegraph Toryism (i.e. Robin Page).

Garry Bushell is too crude even for the Sun these days.

James Whale is safe enough that he has David Essex on his show, and is recommended by Derek Thompson.

And b) I wanna know more about Bushell prior to him going to Fleet Street. He was pretty noted as a music writer in the streetpunk/2-tone days, correct? Could he have gone on to edit the NME or Melody Maker or whatever? John Peel said he was alright to talk to as long as you stayed away from politics.

But James Whale wins on account of his being parodied throughout David Peace's Nineteen Seventy-Seven as "John Shark."

I checked the myspace link Dom posted. GB mentions a bunch of oi comps he was involved in, strangely enough, I can remember one title that he doesn't mention. Why might that be, I wonder?

But the real culprit is Campbell, who should have done his homework and if necessary stayed up all night and read the book - he's paid enough.

i think defending Littlejohn in that discussion is some madcap devils advocacy not even i could attempt (just because his book sounded so atrocious - but then i've not read it, nor Self's).

Actually, the last time I saw him was IRL, he was at the hexagon theatre watching the "Prisoner Cell Block H" stage show with Paul O'Grady.

actually, it might well have been Lily Savage with Gary, I'm almost certain.
