Taking sides: Gary Bushell vs. Richard Littlejohn vs. James Whale

I don't know why. James Whale's late night porn expolits seem somewhat less revolting than Bushell's. Littlejohn (I think) and Bushell both started out as socialists and ended up reactionary. Gary Bushell is supposedly a genius. They're all hideous. But who's best?

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So I take it we're not talking about the 30's horror movie director James Whale, then.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Littlejohn is totalitarian scum. If this were a civilised country, he would be prosecuted for inciting racial hatred against the Muslim community.

James Whale is the least loathsome by far. In fact, I'm not aware of anything he's supposed to have done wrong. At least his late night TV programme attempted to promote serious discussion as opposed to tabloid bigotry.

It was a valiant attempt that was inevitably doomed to failure, appearing as it did in the pub kicking out time slot.

Still, the smooth manner with which he ejected a paraltyic Wayne Hussey from the studio still remains one of my favourite TV moments.

Trevor, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

God, Nick, that's a difficult one. I'm reminded of something Ned said about choosing between death by intestinal extraction or death by slow dismemberment or something.

Will, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, you're right Trevor. It's an unfair contest and James Whale is clearly the least awful. The worst thing I can say about him is that he's the most resolutely blokeish. What about Bushell vs. Littlejohn then? And I don't just mean this to be a competition about who has the most objectionable politics. For example, it should be borne in mind that looking at Gary Bushell's face makes me feel ill.

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Littlejohn is funnier.

dave q, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

littlejohn is the talent ie the threat: i think he is genuinely funny >>> a far more powerful opponent

bushell has a ton of jealousy-compensation issues (what kind of ninny a. boasts abt being in mensa; b. whines when he is dumped as gag writer for BRIAN CONLEY!!¡¡?¿); whale = timmie mallett with a snarky phone manner

mark s, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Wayne Hussey episode is a moment of genius. Gary Bushell is one of the smuggest people on tv and I hate him, Littlejohn is just plain wrong, I only really know him from football phone-ins on radio 5 and the man is an ignoramus, and he doesn't listen either.

chris, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Late night porn? Nick, don't tell me you've been watching Men & Motors.

Madchen, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Help me stop! Actually I think James Whale is doing a good enough job on his own.

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but it was Madchen who knew the exact location of said channel on the list of channels on Saturday night??!!??

chris, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's cause she's a big fan of the motoring programmes shown earlier in the evening.

Nick, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bushell is definitely less of a 'threat' because he spends most of his time bemoaning the lack of variety shows on telly and praising the likes of Joe Pasquali etc

GAH! I have to walk past Bushell's stupid FACE most days because there's an Indian restaurant round the corner which according to the Sun is the bestest in the country or something and they have a big poster in the window with Bushell's FACE on it. Remarkably, they haven't gone out of business yet!

Littlejohn is far nastier, though that Nicky Campell thing with him and Will Self was CLASS.

jamesmichaelward, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James Whale isn't to my mind too revolting at all. i've watched his show a couple of times, he's agot a mermaid he won't allow any innuendo about (though he does keep her moist with a plant waterer), s.. norwegian, it hink, assistant whom he leaves most of the slightly pointless innuendo to. on one of the shows i watche dit emerged she could speak about 6 languages, and clearly isn't as much of a retard as most of the tits with a face you get on those kind of shows. littlejohn and bushell are, of course, insane.

matthew james, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do not remember that, Chris.

Madchen, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

james...you don't live on Narborough Road in Leicester by any chance, do ya??

Venga, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Littlejohn is the most dangerous of the lot because he is allowed the greatest access to the middle-ground media: neither of the other two would be allowed to stand in for Jimmy Young as Littlejohn notoriously did (and even extended the titles of Buddy Holly records to fit his agenda). I don't know whether this vile man was a socialist, but he certainly embraced multiculturalism more than he would admit today, for example booking Desmond Dekker to appear at a London venue in the wake of the Rivers of Blood speech and the formation of the National Front: had Littlejohn had the same worldview then that he has now, he would have regarded the fact that "The Israelites" was number one as a threat to national security.

Sadly, the Tories' regain of three seats in East London / Essex while slipping further back in the shires would suggest that Sun Toryism (i.e. Littlejohn) is holding up better than Telegraph Toryism (i.e. Robin Page).

Garry Bushell is too crude even for the Sun these days.

James Whale is safe enough that he has David Essex on his show, and is recommended by Derek Thompson.

four years pass...
Bumping this because of a: http://www.myspace.com/gal_gonad

And b) I wanna know more about Bushell prior to him going to Fleet Street. He was pretty noted as a music writer in the streetpunk/2-tone days, correct? Could he have gone on to edit the NME or Melody Maker or whatever? John Peel said he was alright to talk to as long as you stayed away from politics.

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

He was a major contributor to "Sounds" back in the eighties, and I believe did edit it for a while. I can't remember much about it, except that the guy's steez hasn't changed much over the years. He used to cover a lot of oi bands, as well as metal bands, was generally obnoxiously macho, he did used to proclaim his socialism from time to time. That's about all I can remember, really.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:07 (nineteen years ago)

He wasn't "noted" as a music writer at all, tho that depends what you mean i suppose, what i mean is that he couldn't write and he had shit taste

Mike Giggler (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:09 (nineteen years ago)

But an interesting thing about Bushell is that (I think) he was involved with Paul Foot, as an assistant or something - more research needed on this I think

Mike Giggler (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

Late '70s as well as early-mid '80s. He was ascloseasthis with Dave McCullough for a while, then they had the post-punk ideological split and Bushell went off to champion OI OI OI SUBS REJECTS UPSTARTS but he proclaimed his socialism until such time as he "graduated" to the Sun.

But James Whale wins on account of his being parodied throughout David Peace's Nineteen Seventy-Seven as "John Shark."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

(x-post)I don't know about "noted", but the guy was well-known at the time (admittedly as a h8 figure a lot of the time) and pretty prolific, he was a big contributor to sounds - 99% of it was bollocks admittedly, but...

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

Bushell was in the SWP, so not great surprise that he ended up as right wing tosspot

Mike Giggler (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:17 (nineteen years ago)

Littlejohn is the worst out of the three, but TBH I wouldn't give a shit if any of them got run over by a steamroller tomorrow.

I checked the myspace link Dom posted. GB mentions a bunch of oi comps he was involved in, strangely enough, I can remember one title that he doesn't mention. Why might that be, I wonder?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:20 (nineteen years ago)

We can play hangman! Work out the missing oi comp title that GB doesnt mention:

CAMPBELL: It's just that you have a lot to do in three hours and you get books at 6 o'clock on a Tuesday night - you have got to bath the kids - you know all about that.

SELF: I do. I have many children. Many, many children.

hahahaha will is firin there.

the classic sounds of the seventh of january 1998 (Enrique), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

I also like the clip of the Richard Littlejohn TV show where Michael Winner tells him off for being mean to some lesbian guests. If you can make Michael Winner look classy you know you're in trouble...

Mark Co (Markco), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

Reading that "debate," Littlejohn appears to have his head more firmly screwed on than Self.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

>> GB mentions a bunch of oi comps he was involved in, strangely enough, I can remember one title that he doesn't mention. Why might that be, I wonder?

GB does actually write about that whole fiasco on his website. (He has an article about Oi! on there that I read once. I felt a bit dirty that I had actually been on GB's website afterwards).

Quick google, and this quote is classic Garry Bushell tosspot-ness:

"In retrospect I think I’m more embarrassed by Crane being a poof."

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

LITTLEJOHN: Well, you can't comment until you have read the other 200.

SELF: Why? Does it suddenly turn into Tolstoy?

tee hee hee!

Mike Giggler (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

I did wonder... strange story though.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

the tolstoy quote out of context sounds odious, and that's all i heard of it at the time. but if you read the t/s, will is playing a belter.

the classic sounds of the seventh of january 1998 (Enrique), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

It's sounds funny not odious

Mike Giggler (Dada), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

I read the transcript and Will seems to be playing a patronising middle-class cunt.

But the real culprit is Campbell, who should have done his homework and if necessary stayed up all night and read the book - he's paid enough.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

you've taken littlejohn's line exactly!

the classic sounds of the seventh of january 1998 (Enrique), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

It's a fair enough line to take!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

was it that Will hadn't read all of Richard's book or vice versa?

i think defending Littlejohn in that discussion is some madcap devils advocacy not even i could attempt (just because his book sounded so atrocious - but then i've not read it, nor Self's).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

I would like to read it. I've read at least one of Julie Burchill's novels. I feel like there should be a 'set' to complete (probably also inc. 'Tits-Out Teenage Terror Totty' by Swells)

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

don't forget 'Londonistan'

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

Self's book (How The Dead Live) is quite good, though he overdoes the "why use a simple word when I could use one you've never heard?" thing.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

It's called writing, Ger.

Doctor Jaggernathy (noodle vague), Friday, 6 October 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

Swells' book isn't bad, or at least not any worse than the rest of the Attck! line (which I have a small soft spot for).

Writing style

Bushell's columns are notable for similes and metaphors that court controversy, such as describing something as being "as fair as Frank Bruno's arse" or (in his 1 May 2005 column) "Today's TV is so obsessively gay, it's a wonder the Radio Times doesn't come with a pink Versace wrap and a free glass of Muscadet".[citation needed] His humour angered some Sun executives, such as Rebekah Wade, but fans include Barbara Windsor, Dom Joly and Roy Hudd, who has called him "the Max Miller of the press."[citation needed]

Where did Gary Bushell go?

Actually, the last time I saw him was IRL, he was at the hexagon theatre watching the "Prisoner Cell Block H" stage show with Paul O'Grady.

(no idea why we were there, was it a birthday pres?)

Mark G, Friday, 12 June 2015 07:56 (ten years ago)

actually, it might well have been Lily Savage with Gary, I'm almost certain.

Mark G, Friday, 12 June 2015 07:58 (ten years ago)

He has campaigned for an English Parliament, a Benny Hill statue[2] and for variety and talent shows on TV. Although his TV column Bushell on the Box still appears weekly in the Daily Star Sunday, Bushell currently focuses on his band, novels and his one-man stand-up show.
