Played to death!

(I looked breifly on ILM in case this has been asked...but anyway...)

I just wanna know what albums (not songs, this time around) you've listened to the most. Do you still listen to them? Or has your body become resistent to their charms? Does having a lot of albums make playing to death rarer?

james, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Certainly a lot of what I practically soaked myself in shortly after I got my CD player in the late eighties, whether it's early Pet Shop Boys or the Cure's Disintegration or Pink Floyd (oh yes), doesn't regularly reappear, and with all the albums I do have these days, the candidacy for being played to death is a smaller pool each time. But it can and does happen, even I had to stop listening to Lateralus there for a while. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have about five that were played to almost the point of no return.

1) Apples in Stereo - Tone Soul Evolution
2) Dinosaur Jr - Where You Been
3) Polvo - Exploded Drawing
4) Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (the best album to study to ever!)
5) Masters of the Hemisphere - I am not a Freemdoom.

I still find myself occasionally going back to these!

james, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just mentioned it as a fave on another thread, but "Ziggy Stardust" got so many plays in my youth it's not even funny. It's not as though I'll never play it again, but I certainly know it inside and out.

Sean, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James, that's remarkable, I had to stop listening to Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness too! It might have taken a little less time though.

Tom, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

CDs that have stayed in the player and not moved for weeks include a lot of stuff most posters will find a little naff, be warned. Loveless natch, the first Catchers album, the first Dubstar album, Music has the right to children, Stina Nordenstam's second album, LemonJelly KY, Beta Band 3eps, Mars Audiac Quintet, 69LS cd1.

Alan at home, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Clayman by In Flames-I listened to it until I learned the formulae and it became dull.
Velvet Underground & Nico - I listen to it sometimes but not like I used to.
Radiohead, the Bends - Once in a while I'll listen to it.
George Winston, December - I've listened to it constantly since elementary school and it hasn't lost its charm yet.

The more albums I have, the faster I get tired of new ones and want more. It's sad.

Maria, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Probably on this list would go the first LPs I owned:

Men Without Hats - Rhythm Of Youth The Jets - S/T Pet Shop Boys - Please Pet Shop Boys - Actually AC/DC - Who Made Who Bangles - Different Light Madonna - Madonna Madonna - True Blue

Mmm, youth...

Dan Perry, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one of the talents that i will never be able to exploit in any way (publicly at least) is knowing all the lyrics + vocal inflections of every song on tone soul evolution and being able to follow along almost entirely to every part. at least it's not mellon collie eh?

ethan, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I get sick of songs on the radio more than stuff in my own collection which I change and alternate regularly. I make a opoint of not repeating songs or albums. When I listen to the raido they seem to play the same awful songs over and over again y'know. Afroman or shaggy anyone? brrr

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sinister and Tigermilk by the godlike Belle and Sebastian (obvious answer, I know, I know). And yes, they are still the best records ever made.

Mark C, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, one day I hope you will realise the magnifence of the pumpkins!

james, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But the Pumpkings. Please! Who had the cartoon about the Smashing Bumpkins? It was either GREAT POP THINGS or my cartoonist pal - MAAAYBE it were both! Urgh Billy Corgan URGH no. NO.

Sarah, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James - isn't that what you said abt Bon Jovi as well?

Andrew L, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah! You'll bow to the greatness of the Jovi too! (It's a lost cause, innit? Oh well!!!)

I am now going to go and listen to I am not a Freemdoom! More albums should be written about evil dogs!

james, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I played The Avalanches' album to death from November last year through to April, and now I consistently avoid playing it for fear of not liking it as much as I did. I think the answer to the last question is an affirmative, though - since I started getting albums for free to review I've not physically been able to overlisten to anything.

Tim, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh yes, if you;re feeling sinister too. not tigermilk though.

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just remembered...Pond: The practice of joy before death!!!

james, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I had a conversation with the Pinefox not too long ago in which he expressed disbelief that it is possible to play an album to death. I expressed astonishment at his disbelief. The most recent album I played to death was 69 Love Songs, which hardly left my stereo between September and Christmas last year. I also saw the MFs four times in four months, which didn't help matters. A great deal of Merritt is well and truly dead for me now.

Madchen, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The pinefox expressing disbelief is a quite a sight to behold. It's his 'thing'

Nick, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've played Guided By Voices' "Bee Thousand" so many times now, even the grooves have grooves. But I'll never ever ever get tired of it.

Trevor, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Currently unlistenable (played to death): Deserter's Songs; Dizzy Gillespie: Chega de Saudade (ok, a song, but quite a long one); Dusty Springfield: Where Am I Going?. I'm sure there's more, I've just put them so far to one side I've temporarily forgotten them.

Currently coming round for rehabilitation (after played to death period layoff): Mayo Thompson: Corky's Debt to his Father; Gorky's: The Blue Trees.

Ellie, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just remembered, when I was four I had the dubious distinction of playing the musical "paint your wagon" repeatedly. i don't know why, it must have been horrible for everyone else. Meatloaf got played a bit too, because he was the closest we got to rebellious music. Did anyone else have such bad taste as me?

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I keep listening to France Gall's Poupee de Son compilation. I don't think I could play it to death.

I own 69 Love Songs, but I'm not sure if I've even listened to it the whole way through.

rosemary, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Having been skint all summer I bought loads of records when my student loan arrived. However, the only ones I've listened to are: Lazy Line Painter Jane, by B+S, and If You're Feeling Sinister, by B+S. I DON'T WANT TO BE A BELLE AND SEBASTIAN FAN.

(which explains the Tigermilk poster in my window)

Graham, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I DON'T WANT TO BE A BELLE AND SEBASTIAN FAN.

A noble goal.

Now about those glorious Pumpkins... (descends into another five hour rant)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who the hell are belle and sebastian?

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Depeche's Violator and U2's Achtung Baby in particular. I find it hard to listen to Achtung anymore due to oversaturation, but I still remember everything about it. Surprisingly, Violator I still enjoy listening to, and I've memorized every inch of it.

Having lots of albums doesn't seem to help oversaturation, for some reason. I figured as I get into new albums they'd push the oversaturated ones out of my head and make them sound new again, but instead the new ones just get added. I wonder what the limit of my memory is.

Vinnie, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The album I like, but don't play to death is Quiet Revolution I listem to many CD's I love Sarah Vaughn, The Shirelles Manfred Mann, Freddy Boom Boom Cannon, Pat Boone& Roy Orbison. These are just the beginning:) Gale

Gale Deslongchamps, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) OK Computer - Radiohead 2) Core - Stone Temple Pilots 3) Southern harmony & Musical Companion - Black Crowes 4) Heroes - David Bowie 5) Closer - Joy Division 6) Dummy - Portishead

1, I still listen to frequently, 3 & 4 I listen to occasionally. I don't own the other ones any more.

smythe,mr smythe, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Belle and Sebastion are a group of artists that are lyrical and melodic and so longingly pretty , they write about loss and hope , and remind me of the best melocnholy in Paul Simons Ballads. This is the highest compliment i can give some one , no one writes better meloncholy ballads then Paul

which reminds me in vancouver i wore out hearts and bones but not graceland

anthony, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Probably my two most played albums in high school would be Depeche Mode Black Celebration (or possibly Music For The Masses) and The Cure Kiss Me Kiss Me.... I'll still listen to them on occasion. I opted out of the grunge scene - didn't buy much of anything new for years and mostly listened to some seventies prog instead (but no fucking Rush goddamn!) But I tired of all that some time ago and started paying attention again. I don't usually overplay things so obsessively now. Especially since the advent of MP3 and the endless access to the new and different. Still, there are always a few. :)

Kim, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who the hell are belle and sebastian?

I feel so happy. :-) Okay, I'll stop now.

To Vinnie and Kim -- yes, I know the feeling about those Depeche and Cure albums. But the joy is that now listening to them is that everything still so happily connects and feels right. :-)

I R finidng it difficult to listen to U2 in the first place.

I R back with vengence!, Saturday, 10 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it took me a good 5 yrs. to listen to zen arcade again, after endless repeats between 14-18. the sea and cake's the fawn was kind of a surprising one. also fear of a black planet but i started listening to that one again recently too.

albums which will never wear out due to repeated playings: bee thousand; here come the warm jets; vision creation newsun; laughing stock; future days.

jess, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't see Loveless on that list of yours, young man! ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

damn! actually, i haven't been much able to listen to loveless in the last few years due to burn out. but i bought a copy for nancy (aka olympia girl, who will no longer be referred to as such in these pages,) was forced to sit down and listen to it anew, and - unfortunately - it's still so etched in my memory that there's no real need to play it. ditto: daydream nation and head over heels.

jess, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Something Else By The Kinks, Daydream Nation, what Fat Nick said.
