"loneliest highway in america", for the bit in nevada/utah, maybe, but it was totally coast to coast right?

so, this is where people share their experiences on the old route 50

the only time I was ever on it (I think) was that little bit in Jefferson City, Mo. You're right about it being coast-to-coast, if you count West Sacremento as being "coastal".

I drive on the Virginia inside-the-Beltway portion all the time when I'm working at CSC. Lonely does not apply to this piece of road.

Made many trips across US 50 from Parkersburg, WV to Clarksburg, WV. It's pretty much a generic 4-lane with median. For a more up-close and authentic rural WV drive, WV 47 is the suggested alternate route (though 47 doesn't go directly to Clarksburg).

I've never been on it, but I have been on 40 through Maryland - I might switch to that between Ohio and the Delmarva Peninsula. Otherwise, it sounds really great for much of the way.

I've driven on the Virginia part as well. Then, I inevitably get lost somewhere around Court House..

Rt 40 in MD runs through where I grew up, it was a prettier drive than I-68 for sure, but I guess it used to be hella dangerous going over those mountains & it took a lot longer to go anywhere. Hey, check this out - Requiem for US Route 40.

In 1988 I drove US-50 from Sacramento, CA all the way through to the DC Beltway. Heck of a drive, I'd love to do it again.

I'm jealous, always wanted to drive cross-country on secondary roads.
The stretch of US 50 along the Ohio river near Cincinnati through to Indiana was the scene of aimless highschool cruising for me back in the 70s.

I imagine that it hasn't changed much since then. Emporia, Kansas seemed to be the king of aimless cruising.

but i thought it used to continue on to sf?

It used to but the routing was changed in the early 60s. Full details here: http://www.cahighways.org/049-056.html
