Theory, some history would be nice, examples would be great, and I'm coming from the perspective who knows nothing more than their names, basically.

The books currently in my list are

Surrealism: Desire unbound
Dada: Art and anti-art
The Fluxus Reader

Other/possibly better examples?

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 24 July 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the second one about 20 times when I was in high school.

Robert Motherwell's (yes the painter)book on documents of dada is actually pretty excellent.

Try Ubuweb or the Fluxus Portal. The former should be on everyone's bookmarks, seriously, it's the best avant-garde resource on the web.

Well familiar with Ubuweb, and I totally agree with your statement. You could quite easily spend a good portion of a lifetime there.

My alma mater Rutgers was instrumental in fluxus (woot). There was a pretty cool retrospective at the school's gallery the last year I was there. Our other claims to fame were James Gandolfini, Ally McBeal, Milton Friedman, some Star Trek dude and greasy-ass sandwiches.

Hannah Higgins (daughter of Dick Higgins and Alison Knowles) is a great art historian, teacher, and Fluxus scholar. Her book:

Not sure where else to post these as there's no Dieter Roth thread.
