Well, it’s tough to describe the genre of the film. The best way I can describe it is it’s 30% comedy, 30% musical, 30% thriller, and 10% science fiction. And those percentage levels could fluctuate, to some degree, as we finish the final cut of the film. There are musical sequences in the film, but it is not purely a musical. It is just as much a thriller, it is just as much a comedy, and it’s arguably just as much a science fiction film. It’s definitely a genre hybrid but somehow the musical thing got kind of blown out of proportion, and people just printed that it’s a musical. But it’s actually a hybrid of many different kinds of movies. I don’t know what it is about consumer culture but we want to be able to categorize everything.
And the cast is Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott, Kevin Smith,Jason Lee, Amy Poehler and Tim Blake Nelson????
Huh.

The music that plays in the little teaser thats there now is gorgeous - it sounds like Mike Andrews work again? I'm actually rather looking forwards to this.

There's a trailer for The Box:
http://video.aol.com/video-detail/the-box-trailer-no-1/629629612
It looks...okay. Cameron Diaz's southern accent is all over the map, and that "WE HAVE TO SAVE YOUR WIFE AND YOUR SON" bit is just awful, but Frank Langella is nice and creepy.
― Telephone thing, Thursday, 25 June 2009 00:58 (sixteen years ago)
actually, he seems to say "WE HAVE TO SAVE YOUR SON OR YOUR WIFE IS GONNA DIE"
this shit looks bananas.
― da croupier, Friday, 10 July 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)
how tf are they going to make a whole movie abt this
― just sayin, Friday, 10 July 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)
by having people make creepy faces at the leads for 90 minutes
― da croupier, Friday, 10 July 2009 15:46 (sixteen years ago)
lolz no "from the director of Southland Tales"?

"From the writer of Domino"

long interview with Richard Kelly about this at AICN.
― sean gramophone, Friday, 6 November 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)
OK, I actually really dug this despite its many hokey moments / effects. It's not Darko good but it's a huge step up for him. Also, the score is awesome.
― Simon H., Monday, 9 November 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)
I guess it's absurd to complain that Richard Kelly added ambiguity-killing sci-fi explanations for everything and a dude walking through a magic portal, because why would you hire Kelly if you didn't want that?
― da croupier, Monday, 9 November 2009 15:07 (sixteen years ago)
In his eraserhead remake, it turns out the bed was an incubator from outer space, and that the baby is actually an alien-human hybrid.
― da croupier, Monday, 9 November 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)
there's still a lot of ambiguity, though. just not of the sci-fi variety.
― Simon H., Monday, 9 November 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)
If you're referring to moral ambiguity, like "is it fair for Cameron Diaz to be killed by alien scientists for her southern accent?" I'd say Drag Me To Hell did it better.
― da croupier, Monday, 9 November 2009 15:20 (sixteen years ago)
late night audience i saw it with was grumbling hardcore (probably over the lack of any genuine horror or even creepiness), but there was a lot of laughter every time the slack-jawed zombies started marching about.
― da croupier, Monday, 9 November 2009 15:22 (sixteen years ago)
this is supposedly his attempt to make a mainstream genre movie. it doesn't quite sound like he succeeded, which is predictable and also makes me want to see it more than if he had.
but he's probably right about this:
“Until I have a theatrical hit, people aren’t going to keep giving me chances.”
which probably doesn't bode well for him.
― STRATE IN2 DAKRNESS (tipsy mothra), Monday, 9 November 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)
well it had a pretty modest budget (25mil) so it's not like an $8 million weekend is a disaster or anything.
For me it worked mostly because it extended the "write what you know" ethos (use of period hometown, characters based on his real-life parents) into the realm of batshit crazy genre movie. It had a sense of warmth even as the twelfth nosebleed made an appearance.
― Simon H., Monday, 9 November 2009 20:18 (sixteen years ago)
I kind of figured maybe Rodriguez would be the one to make a decent FLCL movie, but after reading that Slant article, I deeply hope Kelly does it instead...

didn't really get the box, but the score was a+
― sonderangerbot, Sunday, 15 April 2012 22:59 (thirteen years ago)
i fucking love the box
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 12 February 2021 02:48 (five years ago)
I need to revisit it. I thought of it a few times while watching the empty man, which reminded me of RK to the same extent that under the silver lake did, just....different aspects of the richard kelly thing
I wonder if the score is ever gonna get released or if there's anyone out there who might know anything about that
― stimmy stimmy yah (Simon H.), Friday, 12 February 2021 02:53 (five years ago)
thought Donnie Darko, Southland Tales and The Box were all really interesting films, wonder what happened to him, where is he now?
― Dan S, Friday, 12 February 2021 03:09 (five years ago)
he is apparently working on a screenplay for a southland tales sequel/prequel/amorphous thing idk. i guess we'll see lol
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 12 February 2021 03:21 (five years ago)
I would love to see something new from him, but it doesn't appear that he will return to making films
It seemed like David Robert Mitchell would inherited his mantle with Under the Silver Lake (2018), which was a pretty great film, but I want to see a follow-up
― Dan S, Friday, 1 April 2022 01:37 (three years ago)
