Matches vs Lighters

My wife buys lighters - and tends to lose them frequently. I buy matches and don't care where I leave them because there's always more at home. Got a preference?

matches, b/c cigs taste better when lit w/ matches.

though i use lighters more often b/c where i presently work it's very windy.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the smell of matches. i don't smoke anymore but when i did i always used lighters, matches are too annoying when it's windy. i did used to lose them a lot but i was always quite good at "acquiring" other people's (i.e. borrowing and then forgetting to return) so it all evened out.

No need to worry about that, Jim, unanswered threads get in New Answers anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

lighters almost exclusively. never really noticed them tasting better with matches.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

matches: taste better
lighters: more reliable

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

conclusion: I quit smoking so it doesn't matter.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I just drink lighter fluid now.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Got a light, Gear?

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Just knock together a couple of stones in front of my mouth.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Agghhh no that's not what I meant!

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 04:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Friend once told me "No-one tries to steal yr matches", good point.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The smell or taste that you might like in matches is from poisonous-ass sulphur or something I think. But they're usu. being used to light poisonous cigarettes, so whatever.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends on the matches. There are some matches free in pubs that splinter really easy and the tip flies off, making mini fireballs that put all at the table at risk. Dud.

The ones where you can fold the paper match back to tear on the rip-strip on the back, flick your fingers and it lights - kinda classic, though embarassingly dud. And responsible for my friend's muppet girlfriend putting a massive burn-hole in the top she had borrowed off me.

Errr... so lighters. The thin ones and clippers are classic. Zippo's are so dud. And any transparent ones where you can't scrape the warning notice off in less than free scratches, without using a bottle of turps - they're dud too.

Magnesium and flint is best, basically.

___ (___), Monday, 26 July 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It's easier to light my oven with matches.

robster (robster), Monday, 26 July 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Lighting an oven with a lighter = inviting disaster. Matches all the way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 26 July 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolutely. But for the oven you need long matches, on nimble fingers.

___ (___), Monday, 26 July 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

zippos!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(because they are way more fun and satisfying and i know more zippo tricks than matches tricks)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Zippo's are so dud
Why? Pray tell.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a lighter or two for travel, and a stock of matches at home for when I don't want to go find yesterday's pants to fish out my lighter. And you have to have matches around anyway for candles and ovens and such (though I have a self-lighting oven). I know the question was "vs," but they're both so cheap, why take sides?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Zippos taste like poo poo. It bugs me when people say Zippos taste better. Butane is flavorless. What could be better than that?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

zippo flavour!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

hippo flavour!

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a complete kleptomaniac when it comes to lighters, plus I am virtually incapable of lighting a cigarette with a match when outdoors, so other people's lighters for me.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

someone gave me a box of weather-proof matches a while back. the head was like half an inch long, and striking one produced a massive, eyelash-singing fireburst. several drunk, unwitting friends of mine had funny accidents with those.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

zippos: mmm, petrolly fags

otherwise lighters better than matches except for oven lighting

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the worst is when the match head gets stuck to your finger argh

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't burn resin well with matches.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys try hitting the bong with matches why dontcha.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the worst.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

sixteen years pass...

ok

xzanfar, Monday, 7 December 2020 15:43 (five years ago)

lol matches are so 19th century. Once at school I was getting dragged down an embankment by older some thuggish bully and a whole box of matches somehow combusted in my pocket, painfully burning my leg and I was stinking of sulfur dioxide for the rest of the day!

calzino, Monday, 7 December 2020 16:04 (five years ago)

oh and great revive ... ffs!

calzino, Monday, 7 December 2020 16:05 (five years ago)

Can't open a beer with a match.

On the other hand, matches don't end up as piles of plastic waste in landfills.

Lily Dale, Monday, 7 December 2020 17:29 (five years ago)

matches don't end up as piles of plastic waste in landfills

or as plastic litter.

Respectfully Yours, (Aimless), Monday, 7 December 2020 18:04 (five years ago)

Greenlites ftw

assert (MatthewK), Monday, 7 December 2020 18:05 (five years ago)

Did the swedes invent the match?

I have an old zippo an ex girlfriend gifted me... it's cool but the fuel evaporates pretty quickly.
