i cycle to work from Letchworth to Baldock and back every day. Baldock is a one-time village now turned junction-cum-traffic jam for vehicles going from Cambridge to London and back.
It's not exactly London style traffic but in the mornings there is an abundance of big lorries and stinky little cars all buggering up the atmosphere. As a cyclist who is invariably tardy I ten to cycle quite fast and this means taking in huge gulps of what should be H2O.
I am conscious that this is not all I am breathing. As a smoker, I am also conscious that I may be being hypocritical about this issue, but I believe that carbon monoxide and diesel gas is a little more toxic than fags.
Anyone think I'm being over the top if I get myself one of them little masks that people wear in the inner cities? Anyone already wear one? Do they do anything to protect? Will I get weird looks looking like a bomb-disposal person on a mountain bike?

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, it's just that only Japanese ppl wear those masks in Cambridge, but obviously not in London...blah blah blah. Delete me now!

no filter mask commercially available will filter out Carbon monoxide or any other gaseous nasties produced by cars/lorries etc. What they will filter out is particulates, ie trace metals, but only down to certain sizes. If you do get a mask, get one rated to P3 and try and get one with an exhale valve.

You are being hypocritical!! Fags = Carbon Monoxide.

If you want the mask, get the mask!

that's a little paranoid, but i commute to work too on my bike everyday, and i know what it's like to be behind a bus and have to hold your breath to avoid huge wafts of carbon monoxide.

I remember going on a customer site visit once and there was a bloke there who used his exhale valve to push a crafty gasper through (rendering the mask completely useless, natch)

Yeh, I guess since I smoke I may as well just start seeing what happens when I jump off of bridges seeing as I have no reason to take care of myself any more.

I had a friend (who posts here occasionally but shall remain nameless) who chopped off one of his own moles with a knife. When I called him a mentalist he turned around to me and said "yeh, but - YOU SMOKE!!!"

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It is worth just filtering out the particulates though dude, there's more heavy metals etc in the pollution than if you smoke, and a hella lot more carbon dust

I am not a member on the anti-smoking brigade, dl! I just feel that you could have picked a bad-thing-in-car-exhausts that isn't in cigarettes!

they should put nicotine in petrol and then DL would be fine.
