Also she evidently came into the music & video store where I used to work and rented like six of her movies in one night. Everyone made fun of her about this, but I said: hey, maybe she's really taking some time out to improve her craft.

She revealed: I’ve walked into my dressing room, and had a desk full of fake boobs that the producers have put there because they want me to have bigger breasts.
That’s pretty blatant. I’m not stupid. I know what it means.

10 Things I Hate About You turned up on Hollywood Suite, watched it for the first time. Not close to being as good as Clueless, but not bad. Someone who knows these films better than I do should poll all the fathers--Larry Miller here, John Mahoney, Dan Hedaya, etc. Thought Heath Ledger's Frankie Valli scene was great (might make someone else cringe), also liked the "Bad Reputation" car pulling up alongside the "One Week" car over the opening credits. Tempted to make up a 10 Things I Hate About You Rule: any film that mentions the Raincoats is automatically no lower than a 6.0. Which is where I'd put this film. Actually using the Raincoats would be a lot better.

Definitely no Clueless but still the best of the turn-of-the-millennium Clueless-inspired classic-lit-turned-teen-movie trend (the faintest of all possible praise: most of these films were godawful). Some other good music bits: Letters To Cleo covering Nick Lowe and Cheap Trick--I think it is the latter that they perform on school rooftop over the end credits--and a nice use of Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now," whose appearance surprised me at the time (you are far more likely to hear the song out in the wild today than you were in 1999).
― cryptosicko, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:02 (seven months ago)
I did like the two Letters to Cleo covers, yes--made a point to check who they were after the film.

One of the better teen movies from that era
Forgot about Andrew Keegan in the film: a good James Spader performance.

The guy in that screenshot really interested me--could't place him, but he was really good in the the James Franco thing, The Deuce.
What happened with Julia Stiles? I remember she was big at the time...the normal not-fair-to-women Hollywood dynamic, or did she make one particular film that hurt her career? Or maybe she took a step back voluntarily, I don't know. She didn't stop working.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:21 (seven months ago)
They were very briefly a Next Big Thing in the mid 90s. Had a bit more success later on with movie soundtracks (this, Josie and the Pussycats).
― cryptosicko, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:33 (seven months ago)
Stiles never stopped working, she just moved from lead roles to supporting roles. A smart choice IMO. She was in all the Jason Bourne movies, for example. She's in something basically every year or two.

I heard an interview with Kay Hanley of LTC on the Lithium SXM channel a couple years ago and she had number of good stories (that I wish could I remember more of) about the film. IIRC, re: the credits sequence there had been a miscommunication about where they would be filming, the band thinking they'd be performing <at the school> instead of <on the school>. It was also pretty cold. She also mentioned that it was pretty scary experience, because if it had been shot today they'd use drones or green screen them onto the roof, but back then it was a helicopter FLYING STRAIGHT AT THEM and they weren't prepared for that.
She also said Ledger was a really nice guy.

Never really got into Clueless but this and Can't Hardly Wait are my 90s teen comedy faves.
Oh, I LOVED LtC when I was in HS and thought Kay was so cool. Here and now was probably their most famous song. They were a bigish thing in Boston.
Clemenza the guy in the screenshot is David Krumholtz.
