gotta say, i had her in the annoying and probably crap teeny actresses binliner basement along with neave campbell (so what if she did that film with robert altman) and whoever, but after seeing that film i hate every little thing about you (or whatever its called) with that absolutely great, fun-filled, endlessly satisfying dance sequence she does on the dinner table, i love her now.

(i posted this in i love film also, but i dont think many people do love film around here cos that board seems ultra slow)

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I like her manly voice.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

She is made out of cardboard.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i feel like i've met at least 10 girls who look exactly like her. has this happened to anyone else?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked her but she seems to have not lived her early promise (see also Alicia Silverstone, Claire Danes)

Alba (Alba), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

did alicia have any real promise?

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I want her to croon Barry White songs into my ear as I fall asleep.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Alicia Silverstone in Clueless is the best performance ever made by a man or a woman!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

She's not made out of cardboard. I know, because I accidentally bumped into her as she was walking out of a class. I think she thinks I bumped into her on purpose, but really I just wasn't paying attention.

nabiscothingy, Monday, 26 July 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

clueless is C C C C C C all the way, that is true.

her turn as batgirl however is D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D.

if any of you havent seen the dancey scene in that film, its brill.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing wrong with a li'l absentminded Bump 'N' Grind, Triscuit.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Clueless was the high water mark of the 90's cultural experience. This movie bridged the two halves of the decade.

George W. ILX (ex machina), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

FATGIRL

George W. ILX (ex machina), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

thesplooge (thesplooge), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i find her boring

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i find her. boring?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

She seemed to be a poor sport when she got Punk'd: she was just kinda vaguely annoyed.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, I've never really found her to be all that attractive; I don't get what the big deal is.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

She's not made out of cardboard.

Some kind of plaster that's used to patch walls, maybe? She just seems very inanimate and dull.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

She is made of papier mache and matte finish.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

she's got a set of horse teeth on her.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

who's that other actress who looks just like her?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, she is definitely three-dimensional, though not deeply.

Also she evidently came into the music & video store where I used to work and rented like six of her movies in one night. Everyone made fun of her about this, but I said: hey, maybe she's really taking some time out to improve her craft.

nabiscothingy, Monday, 26 July 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i prefer the gillmore girls

kephm, Monday, 26 July 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM!

TS: Erika Christensen vs Julia Stiles

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Erika Christensen is the hot version of Julia Styles. But she even looks a little off.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 26 July 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear the subsonic frequencies of her voice caused the "LAND" part of the "HOLLYWOODLAND" sign to crumble into splinters and dust.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think she's one of those people who if she appeared in some sort of print ad for a film I'd think, "Oh. She's famous?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

her turn as batgirl however is D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D.

"Batman & Robin" would have been so much better if it had been a musical.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Batman and Robin" was so bad not even Bat-Breasts could save it.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I hear she dubbed the voice of the whale in "Free Willy."

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

So what you're saying, Nick, is that she has a deep voice?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stiles-hate on here makes me sad. She seems nice. I'd be friends with her. We could make homemade milkshakes in the blender, put on pajamas, and watch taped episodes of "Politically Incorrect" (which I don't care for, but I watch with her because I'm a good friend). She'd introduce me to Marlon Brando's ghost at P. Diddy's Academy Awards after-party and I'd tell her when her hair looked bad. She would prank call me and pretend to be Isaac Hayes. Eventually, she would come to realize that she wants to be more than "just friends," but I would turn her down because our friendship means that much to me. We would move to Kokomo, Indiana and grow old together.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, now I want to firebomb the Midwest.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, you're not invited to our Grease-themed housewarming party.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

haha Ned "now"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

erika christensen has amazing curves, thus she wins.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah, so that wasn't Julia Stiles playing Eric Foreman from That 70s Show's girlfriend in that drug movie then?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

no that was erika christensen, The Curvy Scientologist.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha Ned "now"

But I have lots of friends there!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

erika christensen has amazing curves, thus she wins.

I kind of suspect that the reason Julia Stiles hasn't become a bigger star than she is relates to her not having had a boob job.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

aw c'mon, erika christensen is womanly in a very unscalpeled way.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i just take umbrage to someone implying that "curvy" = "breast implants." but yes, in making this explicit i do sound quite calum-esque.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

She should duet with Prince.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, yes!

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear!, your friend is a mural.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

she's cubist!

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

She could be called MC Flat Cat and do the reverse Camile shit rapping on that Baby-Back Ribs cover with Prince.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 26 July 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Save The Last Dance and 10 Things I Hate About You are uber-classic (plus the Bourne films). O was OK. Pretty much awful other than that.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Milo's pretty much otm, though I've only seen the 'classics'.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"better than they could have been" /= "uber-classic"

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

So, Stiles was in 10 Things I Hate About You, as was that kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun, which made me remember this interview with that kid that I heard on the radio, which was about how unlike other child stars, whose parents steal all their money or spend it on stupid things, his parents invested most of his earnings in real estate, so now he's like really rich or something.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

NA, my voice is deeper than Stiles'.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Was that creepy enough?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The younger sister from 10 Things I Hate About You was also on 3rd Rock From the Sun.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No!! Get Creepier!!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"way, way better" thanks.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I could so outdance Sean Patrick Thomas.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

She's the one celebrity Metrostars supporter. I like her for that.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Monday, 26 July 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I fell asleep for a few minutes in French class tonight, and while I was sleeping I had a dream in which I was travelling through a hallway to my death on the opposite end, but when I reached that end, my dream segued into my reading on the internet that Julia Stiles had died. Then I woke up.

||amateur!st|| (amateurist), Friday, 6 August 2004 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

See!

She revealed: I’ve walked into my dressing room, and had a desk full of fake boobs that the producers have put there because they want me to have bigger breasts.

That’s pretty blatant. I’m not stupid. I know what it means.

She's no dummy!

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't notice the breast thing either- The younger sister in 10 things used to be in a kids show where she turned into a puddle.

I remember reading a description of Stiles as "plush-faced" in a movie review once, and I can now never erase that phrase from my memory in connection with her.

I'm totally with amateurist on the Erika Christensen lust, though.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 14 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Julia is sexxyy. Erika is kind of puppydog/chipmuck faced to me. Julia looks like Kate Moss. Sexy. She does have small boobs but i can look past it i guess.

10 Things I Hate About You turned up on Hollywood Suite, watched it for the first time. Not close to being as good as Clueless, but not bad. Someone who knows these films better than I do should poll all the fathers--Larry Miller here, John Mahoney, Dan Hedaya, etc. Thought Heath Ledger's Frankie Valli scene was great (might make someone else cringe), also liked the "Bad Reputation" car pulling up alongside the "One Week" car over the opening credits. Tempted to make up a 10 Things I Hate About You Rule: any film that mentions the Raincoats is automatically no lower than a 6.0. Which is where I'd put this film. Actually using the Raincoats would be a lot better.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 18:18 (seven months ago)

Definitely no Clueless but still the best of the turn-of-the-millennium Clueless-inspired classic-lit-turned-teen-movie trend (the faintest of all possible praise: most of these films were godawful). Some other good music bits: Letters To Cleo covering Nick Lowe and Cheap Trick--I think it is the latter that they perform on school rooftop over the end credits--and a nice use of Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now," whose appearance surprised me at the time (you are far more likely to hear the song out in the wild today than you were in 1999).

cryptosicko, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:02 (seven months ago)

I did like the two Letters to Cleo covers, yes--made a point to check who they were after the film.

Clever Message Board User Name (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:17 (seven months ago)

Forgot about Andrew Keegan in the film: a good James Spader performance.

cryptosicko, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:21 (seven months ago)

The guy in that screenshot really interested me--could't place him, but he was really good in the the James Franco thing, The Deuce.

What happened with Julia Stiles? I remember she was big at the time...the normal not-fair-to-women Hollywood dynamic, or did she make one particular film that hurt her career? Or maybe she took a step back voluntarily, I don't know. She didn't stop working.

clemenza, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:21 (seven months ago)

I did like the two Letters to Cleo covers, yes--made a point to check who they were after the film.

They were very briefly a Next Big Thing in the mid 90s. Had a bit more success later on with movie soundtracks (this, Josie and the Pussycats).

cryptosicko, Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:33 (seven months ago)

Stiles never stopped working, she just moved from lead roles to supporting roles. A smart choice IMO. She was in all the Jason Bourne movies, for example. She's in something basically every year or two.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 12 August 2025 21:35 (seven months ago)

I heard an interview with Kay Hanley of LTC on the Lithium SXM channel a couple years ago and she had number of good stories (that I wish could I remember more of) about the film. IIRC, re: the credits sequence there had been a miscommunication about where they would be filming, the band thinking they'd be performing <at the school> instead of <on the school>. It was also pretty cold. She also mentioned that it was pretty scary experience, because if it had been shot today they'd use drones or green screen them onto the roof, but back then it was a helicopter FLYING STRAIGHT AT THEM and they weren't prepared for that.

She also said Ledger was a really nice guy.

Never really got into Clueless but this and Can't Hardly Wait are my 90s teen comedy faves.

Oh, I LOVED LtC when I was in HS and thought Kay was so cool. Here and now was probably their most famous song. They were a bigish thing in Boston.
