Aug 29 - Sep 3. I live in New York. I was thinking Prague, Paris, Brussels, or Portland.

One of these things is not like the other.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to Louisiana and Alabama then. Can't wait.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to Argentina in November.

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Prague

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

lukey (Lukey G), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Orient Express!

j.e.r.e.m.y (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Not Paris. I have an irrational dislike of Paris. Place de la Concorde is soulless.

(answer = Venice, obv)

I'm going to Argentina in November.

Ah! Did Arthur's tales of his vacation spark the idea?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

If you like to vacation with lots of other Americans, go to Prague. I'd say Brussels (or Bilbao)

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

JBR - remind me when it gets closer to your vacation to ask my roommate for ideas/places to go/places to eat/etc. He was in Buenos Aires in May, and seeing as he's from there and has relatives still there, he'd be a good resource for ya.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Go to Spain!! Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao etc etc!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

well, I might try moving to Spain depending on events in November.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh good luck with that hstencil!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hstencil, you take the Grey Cup too seriously.

Huck, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

heh.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not moving to Canada come November but I did take that immigration test thing online and I would qualify.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

prague is gorgeous. lots of tourists, true, but you'll find that in paris as well. what about montreal? it seems more manageable for a short trip. no jet lag!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to a cafe in Brussels once. The cups had no handles. Talk about play with your mind. Avoid it.

Nah, it's fine really, but Prague is finer. Dunno about Portland, unless it's the one in Dorset.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

top of list, still: chisinau, lisbon, charleston, savannah, santander, marseille, pittsburgh, memphis, halifax, toulouse

leeds and liverpool canal (gareth), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Chisinau!

Why?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I tell you sir, you will one day yet visit Tuvalu.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

P.E.I. dude, GREEN GABLES.

Huck, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

why santander and pittsburgh over bilbao and chicago?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Go to Northern Spain, if we weren't booked up on Holiday destinations for the next four years or summat I'd want to fly to Biarritz and then go all along the top of spain to A Coruna via train and bus, stopping at least at Hondarribia, san sebastian, bilbao and A coruna

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to go to Galicia and Austurias. (I'm probably spelling them incorrectly.)

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

come to ohio!

ohioan, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Galicia is ace. But rainy. Trouble with crossing Northern Spain is it's full of smiling god botherers.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

close enough Stence. I think G's your man there, he's been to both iirc. And I'd love to go, if only fo rthe cider

ha ha x-post

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

my two friends who I stayed with in Madrid last year are from Austurias, and from their description, pictures I've seen, and stories from my girlfriend about visiting them, it sounds great. I've only seen Andalusia, Madrid/Toledo and Barcelona/parts of Catalonia, so going north would be cool.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I am in the same pickle on the same dates m'self

TheRealJMod (TheRealJMod), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

May I suggest JetBlue?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Asturias is a bit of a mystery to foreign tourists, but many Spaniards holiday there (cause and effect).

There is a lovely train line running along the top of Spain from Pais Vasco through to Oviedo in Asturias. I've not travelled the whole line, but what I saw was lovely. This is a wild part of Spain. And that means bears.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

you will one day yet visit Tuvalu.
hopefully before it becomes totally submerged¡

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Not Paris. I have an irrational dislike of Paris. Place de la Concorde is soulless.

I used to think like this about Paris, but I figured things out on my last visit. I think the trick is to avoid all the huge buildings, monuments and boulevards which just make you feel small and insignificant (and it takes ages to cross the road). Instead pick a couple of neighbourhoods slightly away from the centre(e.g Saint Germain, the Arabic/African area centred on Rue de la Goutte d'Or) and explore those without really aiming to see any sights as such.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a really dull time in Paris, but I've only been once and that was a very badly organised trip with a large group out of which I only really knew 2 people, so it probably doesn't count.

The main thing I remember about it was that there was loads of dog shit everywhere. Also, I found attempting to speak French (admittedly probably quite badly but at least I was trying) was very unpopular and prompted surly responses in English.

marvin wang (marvin wang), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

why should people indulge you trying to speak french if the conversation would go more smoothly and quickly in english?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(i'm not accusing you of this attitude, but a lot of americans in paris seem to think the whole place is one big study center for them.)

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(tho yes this phenomenon is frustrating. understandable, but frustrating.)

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well my intention was not to speak French to be "indulged" but to attempt to avoid being a typical Brit abroad and expect everyone to speak English. I guess you just can't win!

This could be a TS: Brits expecting everyone to speak English vs Brits who attempt to speak the local language out of politeness but aren't fluent?

marvin wang (marvin wang), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i see what you mean. but i don't really think there's any ignominy to speaking english in france, if your french isn't up to the task at hand.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

eventually there will come a time when the person opposite you will not speak english, and you'll have to hack it out in whatever french you have.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My current list: Northern New Mexico-Arizona, LA, Yellowstone-Tetons-Wind Rivers, Southern UT, Seattle, the Sierras, Glacier NP (and the Missouri Breaks?), Ohio, London (Paris?), Oregon, somewhere coastal Southeast, somewhere on the Mississippi, Dakotas. I'm somehow convinced I can't go somewhere I don't speak the language. If I go somewhere before the election, I may go to a battleground state and try to do some voter registration.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Northern New Mexico = rulin'.

I'm somehow convinced I can't go somewhere I don't speak the language.

like I said, goin' to Alabama and Louisiana at RNC time. Can't wait.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I've pretty much seen everything in the US (except for New Orleans which I'll check off in October) so I'm working on other countries at the moment. My list includes Argentina, Russia, Mongolia, Namibia, and the Atlantic provinces of Canada

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Orient Express!

Embark on the gleaming carriages of the British Pullman at London’s Victoria Station and travel through the Kentish countryside. After the Channel crossing board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express for your overnight journey throughout France and into Switzerland. Enjoy your day on board as the train travels through the towering Swiss Mountains and Austrian Alps before an early evening arrival in the magnificent city of Venice. Leave the train for a two-night stay in Venice before re-joining for your onward journey to Rome, the ancient capital of Italy.

Non-North American places that might interest me:
nature - Pyrenees, Sahara, Amazon, Patagonia, Iceland, Belize, Himalayas (as if)
culture - Vienna, Tuscany, Holland, Spain, Mali, Prague, Rio, Scandinavia, South of France, Lagos, India, Mexico
both - Japan, Greece

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah! Did Arthur's tales of his vacation spark the idea?

No; CKB and I had been tossing around the idea before we found out Arthur was going there. But Arthur's stories made me want to go even more!

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool. I really should go myself, need to get back in touch with a couple of friends in the area.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

A few weeks ago I found out about a Galapagos eco-cruise that sounds really amazing and nicely low-key. I'll post the specifics here when I get around to looking them up.

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

This might not be the exact tour I was thinking of but it's pretty close:

four years pass...

thinking about using some frequent flyer miles for a trip in sept/oct--possible options incl. budapest, istanbul, greece (not sure where), prague... any other suggestions? want to strongly recommend one of those destinations?

from what i can tell the only places i can afford for my miles are basically europe and parts of central america; crossing out most of western europe cuz of expenses/been to france/spain/italy/england already.

know of any insanely beautiful easy-to-navigate not-too-expensive cities that it would be nice to spend 7-10 days in? or two cities that we could take a train between?

where is gabbneb when you need him???

What about Vienna and Budapest?

some american borad (ENBB), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

hmm budapest surprised i didnt think of that

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

how $$ is vienna?

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

Hmmmm probably pretty expensive (but worth it) but might be balanced out by cheapness of Budapest? Both insanely beautiful and easy to get between as per your specifications.

some american borad (ENBB), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

vienna will be insanely expensive.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

Also - Croatia. Cheap and beautiful.

dang that looks nice.

i started my 'i need a vacation' thread about six months ago... still nothing doing, but the croash looks totally doable.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:24 (sixteen years ago)

i was invited to croatia and would be going next week were it not for the fact that i spend all my money in damn pubs. that pic makes me want to quit drinking though.

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

Compare airfare searches and see what's cheaper. That's how I decided on Berlin out of a number of options.

I hear Istanbul is amazing, although it might be harder to navigate than European cities.

Garri$on Kilo (Hurting 2), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

x-post Now looking at pics of Croatia and wishing I could take a vacation right now. I really want to go there. Everyone I know who has ever gone says it's gorgeous. Am also part Croatian so figure I should go someday.

Max - seriously:

some american borad (ENBB), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

airfare is tricky since im trying to take advantage of the super duper saver rates or whatever w/ this miles. croatia looks mighty tempting!!

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

plus germany is basically right out in terms of other costs

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

Croatia does look awesome - I've wanted to go there for a while.

I think Berlin flights are probably cheaper b/c there are just more planes running from NYC to Berlin than to Zagreb (or whatever the major Croatian airport is), but it's true that other costs will be much lower. Our hotel in Berlin is $71/night, which was cheap for city center. I'm sure food, etc. will be pricey. But the plane tix were only $500.

Garri$on Kilo (Hurting 2), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:34 (sixteen years ago)

yeah but its basically 25,000 miles a ticket to wherever i want to go in europe, more or less. so it costs me the same # of miles to go to germany or france or croatia--and since i cant really afford more than 4 days in france or germany (and since ive been to both countries before and would like to go somewhere new), it makes more sense to go somewhere cheap like croatia

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

i mean not "more or less" even. its a flat 25,000 flyer miles (each way) to turkey, greece, hungary, etc.

my first choice was morocco but its 50,000 each way to go.

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Monday, 6 July 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

prague A++++++ cheap, beautiful, friendly, party, history, the lot.

Budapest- haven't been but have heard great things.

Croatia- more of a beach destination than the others, but also brilliant.

51 logins to SB Jol (darraghmac), Monday, 6 July 2009 15:25 (sixteen years ago)

probably going to shoot for croatia > budapest > prague over 16-21 days in mid-to-late sept/early oct

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)

:-) awesome. sounds fantastic.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

Croatia is great but NOT cheap, esp. in summer. If you can try to go to the island of Hvar inthe south which is pretty lovely. I just came back from a little trip to Latvia and would definitely recommend it! It's got beaches, pine forests and lakes + Riga is amazing (a bit like Prague used to be 15 years ago). I could well imagine doing a 10 day tour across the three Baltic States

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 07:31 (sixteen years ago)

booked a ticket into croatia and out of budapest! were going in september so we're looking at off-season rates; starting in dubrovnik and probably heading up to split then zagreb then budapest.

it's def cheap next to france, england.

FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

accomodations are looking fairly cheap... and were not really shopping or planning on eating out a lot

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 8 July 2009 11:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i think it was just eating out + drinking at bars that got me - accomodation was v reasonable, esp if you rent an apartment.

just sayin, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 11:35 (sixteen years ago)

eatin out & drinkin at bars is very cheap compared to ireland/uk/france etc
