What's the best optician?

I'm gonna go and get my eyes tested (staring at a monitor all day can't be good for me, and I feel like I'm getting worse) and I'm not sure where to go for an eye check.

Where should I go for a quality eye test and a decent price on a nice pair of glasses (if it turns out I need them)?

Are the big ones like Specsavers or Boots better than the boutique opticians for eye tests? There's one 25 yeards from my office (called David(?) Clulow) in Old Compton Street, where 4 of my colleagues have recently purchased new frames. Now I don't think I'm going to need glasses - I've never needed them before - but it's convenient and, as my company should pay for it, it doesn't need to be as cheap.

I like Black and Lizars best, although i don't think they have any branches outside Scotland.

I got mine from David Clulow on Neal St in Covent Garden and got a pretty good deal, buy 1 get 1 free or something and they were cheap to start with.

i always used to go to a friendly local optician, but Specsavers was the first place i tried when i moved to london and i was v.impressed with efficiency/good service/friendliness/prices etc, altho i was prob influenced by the fact that the optician who tested me had an incredibly sexy voice. it's the little things that count eh?

last time i went to have eyes tested in Specsavers - they had all the latest hi-tech gadets

including a machine that reminded me of Arcade Games in the 80s, when you had to click a device - when a light flashed on the screen.

Are they all sexy lab scientists with glasses and lab coats at Scepsavers? I am SO there.

If Carlsberg made opticians...

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's sad that the "if Carlsberg made..."meme has replaced the "if you're drinking Bacardi" meme

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing is, if you're drinking Bacardi these days, Vinnie Jones might spill a bottle of the stuff in your face.

"spill"

or "smash"?

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...

What is with the increasing lack of opticians these days? Is everyone buying their glasses online or something?

First Boots buy out Dollond & Aitchison then close down my branch, then they close down my local Boots Opticians as well. Now all I'm left with is Specsavers (shit awful) and a couple of independents that I assume are fantastically expensive since they usually are compared to the chains, unfortunately.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 11:49 (twelve years ago)
