broil them, or cut them loose from their casing and pan-fry them with onion, pepper, and other veggies. then wrap the bits in an omelet or pancake.

barring a grill, jeremy's suggestions are probably best.

You can also poach them in beer and then finish the skin when the beer's evaporated. Make sure to perforate the casing.

can you translate this into simpler non-foody language, preferably using only monosyllables?

BOIL THEM IN BEER AND BUTTER AND ONIONS

TheRealJMod (TheRealJMod), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i do have a few cans of bud. how exactly do i "poach" the brats?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

if frozen: broil til warm, then sautee in butter, white onion and cheap wisconsin beer (fourthed?).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i think michael means to sort of boil the brats in a small amount of beer (just enough to cover, i'd say), in a non-stick pan without a lid. when the beer has evaporated, saute the brats until the skin is golden and crispy.

Less beer than that. If you cook them long enough for that much beer to evaporate, they'll be drawn-up knots of gristle. You want them be done-through about the same time as the beer has evaporated. Just before all the beer's gone, a dab of butter and the onions. German mustard on the side, some potato salad or braised red cabbage. UMMY!

oh no!

disaster: i put the brats in the broiler to heat up, but then the latch that locks and unlocks the oven got stuck (i'm housesitting; this is a 25-year-old oven at least) and i can't open it! i turned the broiler off obv., but the brats are stuck in there until i can figure out how to fix the latch, or rather, hire someone to come in and fix it (believe me, i've looked at it every which why trying to find a simple way of fixing it, but it ain't happenning).

maybe tomorrow i can prepare the other brats without using the broiler, but i don't have the energy to do so now after panicking about the oven being closed shut.

the saga will continue...

(thx for everyone's advice btw. it had me salivating for sure. and i even got out the onions and the beer and the butter in vain.)

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

This is terrible. Brats stuck in the oven all tasty and ready. I feel your pain.
