I'm not even communist, although I believe in a lot of the virtues of socialism. Figured it'd be a way of meeting progressive people though.

Thus far all my friends and family have told me it's a bad idea.

Good idea/bad idea?

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

bad idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Him and Lyndon L. getting down.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, david, i can't imagine you'll come to any harm, but the cpusa along with other remnants of the old left in the states seem to subscribe, without acknowledging as much, to the "well may the world rot" mode of politics. not to mention the endless headache-inducing secterian squabbling over issues that should have died with the soviet union.

none of this explains the occasional vitality of the world socialist web site. they're trotskyites, btw.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the cpusa is a bunch of retired people who vote democrat!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

now you'll never work for the federal government. EVER.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope you can grow a beard

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this the CPUSA you're talking about?

Nemo (JND), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There are better political organizations for meeting lefties. The SPUSA (new old-left, not as nuts as the CPUSA, run their own candidates) or the Democratic Socialists of America (pinkos who think they're doing something by throwing in with the Dems).

Or if you're under thirty, the Young Peoples' Socialist League. Oh, baby.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

or the spartacists, or....oh man there's too many of them. life of brian to thread.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anybody know how this works? Am I going to get to go to meetings? Will there be punch?

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Proletarian Punch

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm from the hated landowning class and though i tremble in fear at the might of the proletariat (once roused and on the march) I do wonder what exactly the CPUSA does? Are they building an army of proletariats at the Vanguard of the Revolution? Do you have to watch intermnable North Korean propaganda? (It sounds awful, but when you think about it I have to spend endless hours shopping and oppressing my cleaning lady - almost as dull as watching North Korean movies)

Best of luck with the revolution, please give me 2 days notice of any gov't overthrow.

Anthony (Plato Guy), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't really see the north korean connection, sorry.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i always think of communism as international in scope. so by joining your local party you would naturally have to learn about the party everywehre... global revolution, etc etc.

And by studying succesful parties (NK being one) it would allow your local party to learn how to put your country onto the socialist path of revolution.

Also, I just find the whole idea of North Korea fascinating and have been known to slip a mention of them into any conversation... it's one of my vices...

Anthony (Plato Guy), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"So what did you think of this tomato soup?"

"It's great! It's red, like the flowing blood of North Koreans."

"That's nice."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I thinking about switching to the socialist party, I didnt know there was one. I may still try CPUSA, as it might be funny.

David Allen (David Allen), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

what are you getting out of all this david? you seem to waffle between ingenuousness and condescension.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I coined the phrase "You look very Pyongyang today!" but it never caught on. story of my life.

Anthony Johnson (Plato Guy), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)
