"Amish in the City": why do I love UPN reality shows so much?

Judging by the previews, there's no way that this show can't be great.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to see it, too! Having just seen the Devil's Playground documentary and being intensely fascinated by the whole idea of rumspringa, I want to know what happens to these Amish kids when they get transported into this whole other, upper-upper-class world, with people who will probably never in their lives work as hard as the Amish kids have already worked. I wonder if any of the Amish kids will awaken to the possibility of a better life, and if any of the rich kids they'll be with will end up changed for the better. Or maybe there will be a clash. Anyway, I will be watching this.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It seems to be reviewed quite well, too.

While not taking away anything from the Amish lifestyle, there are different sorts of hard work that urban people have to face -- similarly, "better life" is hard to apply as a universal constant, though I think that's what you're saying.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Points well taken. Thanks.

It's encouraging to hear that this program was "reviewed quite well". I'm even more excited about this program, now.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon people, anticipate with us! Amish! And they're in the CITY! SMASH HIT!

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

well when does it debut?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the only reason Viacom went with this is because so many people objected to the "Beverly Hillbillies" idea.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Teeny, methinks we have a new reality TV show to gawk over... Simple Life is so past tense.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Tonight at 8pm!

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

christ, this isn't a BMP show is it, or are other folks behind it?

Kingfish von Bandersnatch (Kingfish), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

if anyone can videotape this for me, as i would like to see it both culturally and research wise (im writing a book on xian implications of pop culture) i will pay them in both love and cash money. lots of love and a tiny bit of cash money. (like postage)

anthony, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I'll tape this since there's another show on at the same time; if no one else who lives closer to you tapes it, I'll hook you up.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

that would be filled with fountains of the awesome

anthony, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the other show isn't on tonight, but I'll tape Amish anyway. Would you also like to see what Bay Area commercials are like?

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

in fact i would.
is it only one episode, or more then one episode

anthony, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

10 episodes in all, tonight is a 2-hour premier.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

do you mean, the fountains would be filled with awesome? because fountains are awful heavy.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, doesn't anyone else find this potentially sickening and appalling?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

For a reality show, I don't find this one to be particularly exploitative.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

how so spencer?
devils playground is one of the best docus ive seen, and i think it might be like that.

what do i have to pay you to see all ten?

anthony, Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Coming soon to FOX, 'Candy Store' where convicted Pedophiles run a nursery - hijinx ensue!

I mean, it's really only a matter of time before we have Christians being eaten by lions, right?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

or how about a live 24 hour feed of a terminal patient dying? half of the screen real estate could be EKG readouts etc

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Or how about a show called 'Metaphor' which is simply vultures feeding on carrion.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Or what about a show called 'Grumpy No Fun' starring me right now?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if the theme song is "L'histoire de Spencer Chow" as performed by France Gall, I think I'll watch.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

At most, I think the fact that there's a show about a number of Amish youngsters on their rumspringa is at worst opportunistic. They're already trying out the English way of life, just that now television producers have put them in LA and broadcasting the results.

Kingfish von Bandersnatch (Kingfish), Thursday, 29 July 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony -- I'm guessing that the entire run of the show will be 11 hours, which would fit onto two tapes if you don't mind lesser picture quality. Probably looking at $7US total.

(Actually, if someone Tivo's it, it might be possible to burn it to CD, which would be more cost effective.)

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Thursday, 29 July 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(Note: Possible spoilers below.)

Okay, I watched this program tonight and really enjoyed it. It's not exploitative of the Amish, or at least it doesn't seem to be. I think it'd probably work great as a social experiment, opening the eyes of both the "city kids" and the "Amish" as to what their cultures are like and hopefully enabling both to understand each other.

These Amish kids seem to be having much more of a well-adjusted rumspringa than most Amish kids have. Instead of spending every night boozing it up, getting high, and being destructive, just because they can't think of anything else to do, they're actually getting to learn about the outside world. As for the "city kids", I think their inclination to give the Amish kids a hard time is probably due to the fact that not many of us "English" people fully understand the Amish, which means that hopefully with time the "city kids" will be more tolerant of the mannerisms and behaviors of the Amish kids.

I'm excited about seeing more of this show.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 29 July 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the tapes would work for me better, tell me about how to get you money

anthony, Thursday, 29 July 2004 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

my god...i couldn't change the channel. I really liked this show. That Jeremy Enigk mother fucker Reese needs a slap. And being from Massachusetts makes me want to vomit after listening to that dipshit from boston.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 29 July 2004 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit I went to bed before you told me it was on last night.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 29 July 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I only caught a few minutes of it. What's this about the Amish not doing dishes? I would think the Amish would be quite neat and tidy. I have no basis for any of my preconceptions about them, though.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 29 July 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

This show was really good. Mose is my new hero.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeremy Enigk mother fucker Reese

hahaha. was he ALSO able to combine marijuana and chamber pop?

Kingfish von Bandersnatch (Kingfish), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Aww sorry teeny -- but now I do have a tape of it! (Though it's got Anthony's name all over it.)

That Nick is a total parody of himself, like a character straight from an SNL skit. NOBODY TALKS LIKE THAT MAN! NOBODY!!!

Mose is da bomb -- it really bugs that all the city chumps keep calling him "Moses" (unless Mose is just a diminutive of Moses). He nearly drowns and then jumps back into the ocean!

What was infuriating is how intractably narrow-minded the city chumps were about certain Amish habits even after it seemed that they were all getting along swell, especially compared with how willing the Amish kids were with trying new things.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Besides the obvious pleasures (hating the city kids at the beginning for being such assholes; rolling my eyes at the space-cadet judgmental vegan), I like how the show is kind of "tame" for a "Real World"-style reality show; the cast doesn't sit around boozing it up all night like in the actual "Real World." (I wonder if there's a rule that they're not allowed to drink.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

If I saw one more commercial for "The Player" i was going to shoot myself. "Don't hate the player, hate the game." And also that Taye Diggs show "Kevin Hill". Christ.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone watch "Trading Spouses"?

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm saving myself for "Wife Swap."

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Thursday, 29 July 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

and they just greenlighted "Corn Hole" so it's gunna be a fun season!

Kingfish von Bandersnatch (Kingfish), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

OKAY, EVERYONE!

If you weren't able to catch the "Amish in the City" debut, UPN will rerun it at 7:00 p.m. CT (8:00 p.m. ET) TOMORROW night. REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER!

Maria D., the Amish are raised to where a male doesn't do dishes. They leave all household chores to females. Hopefully with a bit more exposure to the "English" world, these Amish kids will see that that's not how things are supposed to work outside of the confinese of the Amish communities.

Mose is awesome. He already sounds like the Amish pastor he might very well end up being. I feel like at this point, the chances of the quintent wanting to go back to the Amish way of life are probably rather high, but I think that might possibly change as time goes on.

I wonder if Mose, Ruth, Miriam, Jonas, and Randy will sometime in this show start to talk to each other in Pennsylvanian Dutch, like how some of the Amish kids talked to each other in Devil's Playground. Hearing that very old language being spoken was so great, because it felt like a bit of an entry into a very private world.

One of the things I like a lot about this program is that you're getting fully fleshed-out personalities here, not just one-dimensional role fulfillers. The "city kids" are both frustratingly ignorant and lovably open. The "Amish kids" are far more sophisticated than one would think they'd be. You get a sense the people behind the show aren't trying to manipulate you via creative editing into hating someone you wouldn't otherwise hate.

I myself quite like pretty much everyone. Even Ariel has shown her good side, in helping to save Mose from drowning out in the ocean and showing concern immediately following the incident. Plus, as space cadet-y as she is, she actually seems to try to connect with the Amish kids, which a lot of other people, I feel, wouldn't.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 29 July 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

According to "Devils Playground" didn't 99% of the kids who completed rumspringa go back to the Amish church? Thats a staggering amount.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

No I didn't watch The Player if anyone wanted to catch me on the thread subtitle.

Jimmy Carter, History's Greatest Monster (Leee), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

um, the multiple camera angles of "Mose drowning" were so ridiculous, there was even a Mose-eye view shot with the girl reaching out to the camera to help "save" him. I was digging the show up to that point, but that fake shit they throw in for increased drama ruins it.

Joseph Pot (STINKOR™), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I'm all quiet now.

Jimmy Carter, History's Greatest Monster (Leee), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

According to "Devils Playground" didn't 99% of the kids who completed rumspringa go back to the Amish church? Thats a staggering amount.

Not 99%, but close enough -- 90%. I'm thinking that's probably because the Amish kids who go through rumspringa don't really get a taste of the outside world. They just booze and drug it up without really doing much of anything else. Remember how in that documentary, that girl who finds herself looking at the option of going to college is also a girl who doesn't go back to the Amish way of life? If the Amish kids actually lived a normal "English" life, with school and part-time work and hanging out at movies and bookstores and such, a much higher percentage of them probably wouldn't go back to the community once rumspringa is over.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And I LOVED Reese! I love pissy drama queens. They're so entertaining!

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

LEEE, THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT. I find myself looking forward to next week's episode with fervent anticipation. Argh. I'm already contending with a "Queer Eye" and VH1C's "The Alternative" addiction -- one more show is just... madness. MADNESS!

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 5 August 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha! Definitely a good episode tonight.

Jimmy Carter, History's Greatest Monster (Leee), Thursday, 5 August 2004 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The amish remind me of my canadian cousins.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally got round to seeing this. I kind of have a crush on that one Amish girl.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

how cool is MOSE? Beano stick!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha! I didn;t see all the love for Mose upthread. Now THERE'S franchise potential if ever I saw it.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mose should post here.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Boy, this has been getting boring FAST. It turns out that the producers are fairly inept at creating narrative arcs, even within a single episode, and end up relying on an Amish saying, "I'd never done this before, but I was going to try it all the way" much too often.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(cut to Amish guy trolling for trannies on Santa Monica Blvd)

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm getting a bit disappointed with the whole show too, though my reasoning is a bit different -- I dislike all the challenges they're foisting on the housemates. If I wanted to watch "Survivor" or "Big Brother", I'd watch "Survivor" or "Big Brother"!! I was really hoping they'd continue to go for the purely observational, instead of making them do stupid races.

I don't think the "I'd never done this before, but I was going to try it all the way" aspect of the program is boring, really. I think the Amish kids are going to be bound to be repeating this sentiment over and over again, mainly because they're being exposed to all sorts of things they'd never gotten exposed to before. Like the whole Hare Krishna thing -- granted, it was pretty hilarious how they were going on about how "pretty cool" that whole experience was, but at the same time, I think it's also indicative of how much more open-minded the Amish kids have been throughout this experience.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I thought it was pretty... odd... how Nick and Ariel ended up being the ones to hook up! I mean, Nick and Ariel?! I guess that whole "opposites attract" adage definitely has its relevance here!

My favorite "city kid" has changed 100%, BTW. I no longer think of Kevan as a "prettier than thou" person, but rather the most open-minded of the non-Amish kids. I think it's cool how he's being so kind and friendly and welcoming to the Amish kids. Granted, I don't know if he'd be doing this if Reese weren't the main instigator behind the backstabbing being done on him, but the way things are going now, I have a problem with every single "city kid" with the exception of Kevan.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

So when do they like, literally crucify them?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 26 August 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...

So, uh, any of y'all watching "Breaking Amish"? It's trashy garbage but a compelling gimmick. I do hope they start developing some better plots than just endless fish-out-of-water shockaroos....and for god's sake, get them out of the Theater District.
