If you want wild living FAST!
And if you want to end up giving your all,
Let's...because, pussycat she's living
Reckless pussycat she's riding high,
If you think that you can tame her,
Well just you try!
Yeah! Just you try-y!

LAWNORDER

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, how do you find driving over here? i've been urged to take the wheel a few times in the u.k., but i've refused on the grounds that i'd do the wrong thing in a moment of panic and cause a huge accident.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, good on ya grrrrrrl! First bike messenger you take out, think of us!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren, I drove about 1,500 miles when me and Sarah did our SW United States road trip last year. After a shaky start I really enjoyed it - there was inevitably less traffic than in the UK (bear in mind we only skirted LA), the roads are wider and straighter, and drivers are strangely stepford-like - none seem to get angry, drive like maniacs or do unpredictable things.

Having said that, driving in the UK would only take a small adjustment too. The laws, road markings and signs are slightly clearer and easier to understand over here, and the lack of multi-lane roads might make things more of a squeeze, but make possible accidents much rarer. We also have smaller cars for smaller spaces, and pedestrians aren't the sacred cows that they are in the states, so they tend to get in your way less.

cleary you weren't driving on the East Coast.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Or in Los Angeles. Or Vegas.

Congrats Rosemary!

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

cool, mark. maybe i'll try it next time i'm over. wait for the skynews bulletin: unlicensed american driver causes catastrophic roadway pileup.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

As an adjustment, it's a pretty small one. It usually takes me a half hour of driving to switch between the two. My only problems here are that the rodas can sometimes be too straight, too uniform. The driving experience loses any sense of spontaneity, but it's much better than the UK if you just want to cruise and listen to your Boomin' System.

Or NPR or something.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

did vice city prepare you for driving in the us @d@ml?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The other way round.
