thesplooge (thesplooge), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah! I was going to say Aqua Teen - particularly Carl. I don't understand why this hasn't been all over UK telly yet. Sealab 2021 as well - it's perfectly bizarre - or should I say BIZARRO!!!!

Funny how American humour is getting more and more surreal these days while UK comedy is going for a super-realistic approcah with the Office and Garth Merenghi. It used to be the other way round.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

UK humour is VERY surreal these days. See Mighty Boosh and Monkey Dust for evidence, Little Britain less so.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

That thread in ILM with the promo pictures.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh! I haven't seen Mighty Boosh before - what's it like.

I wouldn't say Monkey Dust is particularly surreal in essence - more satyrical and situationist. Compared to Sealab where a bunch of morons in an underwater lab literally blow each other up in weird and wonderful ways over the space of 10 minutes or Aqua Teen where crime fighting nitwit fast food items terrorise their neighbour's house - even Little Britain doesn't compare. Not that one is funnier than the other but I do find the American cartoons provide the instant gratification/belly laugh thing more easily than any British shows at the moment.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Mighty Boosh is very very patchy. I like it best when the leads are just verbally riffing off each other - some of the over-the-top surrealisem seems extremely forced.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf is aqua teen?

piscesboy, Friday, 30 July 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Jmod is right about The Family Guy last night. "Do you like popcicles, musclely paperboy? I got a whole cellar full of them."
And the Adrien Brody Coke commercial cracks me up for reasons too obscure to explain. (They always hide his nose with a can of coke? wtf?)I really want the AquaTeen box set. I was trying to explain it to my mom, and she replied with "superheroes in New Jersey? That's not possible."

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only seen the first season of ATHF, but my favorite part is always the mad scientist at the very beginning. Do they keep his parts for the second season?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

A very kind American sent me all 50 or so Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes in MPEG format and they've been cheering me up no end.

For those who don't know, it's a 10 minute cartoon about a crime-fighting team made up of a milkshake cup (Master Shake), a box of fries (Frylock) and a piece of burger meat (Meatwad). They generally stopped fighting crime after the first episode, preferring to piss about in their endlessly suffering neighbour Carl's (the funniest element of the show) swimming pool and getting themselves into the most ridiculous scrapes imaginable.

My favourite scene:

(Carl and Shake land in the back garden after being sucked through a black hole)

Shake: Woah! I wonder what dimension that was?! I'm going to get something to ea--- Good God Carl! Look at your hands!!!

Carl: (resignedly) Yes I know. They are very big. I'm going to go and have a lie down and then try and phone a few hospitals or something.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's weird to think of Samurai Jack strictly in terms of humor -- so one shouldn't -- but the joy of the series is how perfectly balanced the action and humor is, and watching the DVDs of the first season was a blast, especially the fairy tale episode that concluded the season. Aku's increasingly muddled attempts to tell a story the 'right' way had me dying.

When my friends and I first encountered the Hunger Force, Meatwad exuded a strange fascination for us all. I think it must have been the tooth.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"can you pass me that chaaaaainsawwwwwww?"

ken c (ken c), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the way Meatwad can shape shift but only ever turns into an igloo or a giant hotdog. Oh and one time he turned into the Meat Bridge, but that was a one off.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and this movie-length episode of a show called Fairly OddMothers, which I had never heard of before last Saturday, was often surreal genius, with the characters chasing each other through other TV channels and animated shows. I hadn't seen anything quite like it since the fantastic Ralph Bakshi Mighty Mouse episode where MM ended up stuck in a bizarre Jetsons/Flintstones fusion and then a Scooby Doo parody that defies easy description, though I've tried before.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned - Samurai jack is genius. Any idea when new episodes are coming out?

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately the most recent news I heard is that production has been cancelled -- supposedly a total of fifty-two episodes were commissioned but only forty-eight were shown in the States, forty-nine in the UK (no idea why the difference). If anyone has any further news, speak up -- I'll say this much, a Samurai Jack feature film, if done right, could compete for being the best action film of any given year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I read somewhere that they were making an animated SJ feature and a live action one. Live action Samurai jack? Huh?

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure I saw a feature length episode of Samurai Jack. I wasn't sure how much I liked it but I loved the artwork.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Samurai Jack live action? Please reanimate Toshiro Mifune's body rather then let Jackie Chan do it.

Ben Bright in Pittsburgh: Here is a telephone conversation I had with the guy in our fantasy football league who drafted Ricky Williams five years ago and has built his team around him.

Mike: Hello?

BB: Hey Mike, just calling to give you my condolences on losing Ricky.

Mike: Ugh.

BB: Sucks pretty bad, doesn't it. You're out a bunch of money 'cause of him.

Mike: Yeah, now I have to hope William Green comes back big with Cleveland.

BB: Yeah. But I got good news for you.

Mike: Yeah, what's that?

BB: I just saved a bunch of money on car insurance by switching to Geico.

Mike: (hangs up)
