Ben Franklin: They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.(Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759)

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 30 July 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I know that's said with good intentions and all, but it's almost as annoying as righties dropping the Orwell "Pacifists are objectively pro-whatever" line or any quote from 1984.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 30 July 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you think Ben Franklin's best friend ever said "BF is my BFF"?

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 30 July 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, carry on

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 30 July 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, of course. read up on your history.

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 July 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i like that Orwell quote. 'Tis true, you know

People who say "I'm willing to give up some of my civil liberties in the interest of national security" should be deported or hanged

You do realize if this threat were to be carried out it wouldn't really be in the spirit of civil libertarianism, right? I hope you do and only phrased it this way to be amusing.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"amusing"

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"in"

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 30 July 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not so sure. By merely voicing these opinions they put my own rights at risk. As a result, I feel the need to defend my rights by any means necessary. I know you're just being a party-pooper, and theoretically of course I agree with you, but don't you agree that those who support The Patriot Act are actually violating EVERYONE'S rights by pushing for these policies?

Let's try to keep this rational this time, fellas...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"pooper {...} violating"

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 30 July 2004 06:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I like to imagine what B Franklin would do to people who want to give up freedom for security. I'm thinking lock them in a box full of poisonous snakes.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Ben Franklin wrote off his own son for not backing the revolution, so I don't think he would be too sympathetic.

earlnash, Friday, 30 July 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

like when you write off a car??

zappi (joni), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

because merely expressing a belief is not a good enough reason to be deported, and hanging is barbaric

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

'some of [your] civil liberties' have already been given up, and good thing too. your freedom from being searched at airports was taken away decades ago, for example.

ENRQ (Enrique), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and no one has gotten on a plane with a box cutter or gun for decades, either.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

which is true, but it shouldn't need restating that roger's concept of 'rights' is 'freedom *to*' and not *from*. no doubt he believes in the right to bear arms; i believe in the right to not being shot. by backing the death penalty you are giving the right to kill to... the state. there is no more extreme instance of shedding your civil liberties.

ENRQ (Enrique), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

People will always value security over freedom. Israel understands that.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

But freedom and security are not binary opposites. It isn't a case of either/or.

ENRQ (Enrique), Friday, 30 July 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess the point then tracer is that it is--not always, but in a lot of cases--a false choice.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Confederate sympathizers should be deported, too.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

If the pilots and passengers on the 9/11 flights all had firearms, this would never have happened.

Whiskeytown Littlecock (ex machina), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

jon otm

everyone needs to carry!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'd rather not talk about that because it's something negative"

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

pot, kettle, yaddayaddayadda.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)
