Do You Know What I Mean?

Why is it that ppl only ever use this phrase to suffix what they have to say when it is BLATANTLY OBVIOUS what they mean?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

cos they have nothing else to say so have to reinforce it with youknowwhatimean to make their point that much more important.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

you feel me?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah na-ha-mean?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

eh?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Last time I heard someone over-using the term, that's the way they said it - "na-ha-mean?" Like, every 5-6words, like it was a punctuation mark or s.th. It tended to obscure what he was actually talking about.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer to say "You know what I mean" as it's an order and it stops me rambling on bullshit for ages trying to explain my point and getting lost and tongue-tied while they just go "yesh yesh, uh-huh, yeh". You know what I mean.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend said this to my mum last night. I took great pleasure in taking the mickey. To be fair she was actually clarifying that my mum understood something.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

*plummy voice* No, I'm afraid I haven't the foggiest. Would you care to elaborate please?

Quit your jibber-jabber - Mr. T

Lee Michaels to thread.

briania (briania), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes I feel bad that that is pretty much entirely what Jim Varney's "legacy" will entail. It's weird that everyone will remember him as that goofy hillbilly dude when in reality he was a pretty serious fella.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

nahmeen?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the variation "nahmsayin?".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and especially "yuh hurr?".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

dude I love Jim Varney and prolly would not have heard of him except for Ernest! I mean, shit, the dude struggled for *how long* 'til he made those commercials? RIP Jim.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel the same way about people who ask "Right?" after everything they say, and refuse to continue until you give them some sort of indication that, yes, what they said was most probably true. Especially if they're telling a story, and I have no way of knowing.

chrisco (chrisco), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

After nursing a massive crush on Robert Del Naja for months I felt the whole thing crash and burn immediately upon reading an interview with him and he said this CONSTANTLY. On the other hand, if anything can make incessant "nah-mean"-ing ok, it's probably RDN's voice.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Neil Diamond!

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Friday, 30 July 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer "ya follow me?" or "dig so far?"

"nah wha mean" is just barely less annoying than "ya know wha'm say'n"

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i use "ya hear me cluckin' big chicken?"

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I say "you catch what I be throwin'?"

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

fact: i have never said this

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

my grandma would always use this as punctuation, so I have an affinity for it.

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think other languages have this, too. I lived in the Netherlands and people were constantly saying "weet je?" at the end of their sentences.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You catch my drift?

Maria D. (Maria D.), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)
