Friday evenings

Apologies if this is an existing thread, but talk us through the end of the working week, from, say, now on a regular Friday. What time does work officially finish? And unofficially? Do you or your work have any Friday rituals?

Mark C, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my ritual is to get out of here as quick as possible, walk down to the train station, get the train into Vauxhall and get the Victoria line home

gareth, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Work here officially finishes at 4 though you start seeing people sneaking off (incl. me, hopefully) before then. It's a bit of a piss- take to be honest. There's never any after-work fun and I don't hang around anyway, I head for the bus stop, and then London, and then drink with my friends there, and we talk about all you lot.

Tom, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I make my own time (sadly for me), and cos I am busy and late with big deadlines just now I have temporarily given up the early part of FRiday evening. LEave work at 6.30ish, go swimming, eat, read paper, watch NEwsnight, set video for Buffy, sleep. Going out now Saturdays/Sunday, and increasingly weeknights (Wednesdays are very popular work going out nights, for some reason).

I just heard someone outside my office say "I'm off, had enough," to which colleague repled - "YEh, end of the day, beginning of the weekend", which is pretty common round here. I always imagine the rest of the world operates on this basis, and I am alone in the world working at 6.30/7pm Friday night. I quite like that feeling, tho I know it's not true.

Ellie, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Go back to West London, with an arty film rented from the Barbican library, then off to the North Pole Road Costcutter, buy a bottle of red wine, come home. Make pasta/curry/Nigel Slater recipe. Eat food, watch film, drink wine, sleep.

Not the case tonight, though, because I have to revise for this bastard Phonology test I have tomorrow morning... wish me luck, ILE!

Will, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Office, Ellie? I had the floating thought you were doing a PhD..?

Will, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

finish 4.15. home asap. often off into town to see friends for unimaginative night out (movie/beer/cheap food).

Alan Trewartha, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Usually leave around 5. Hank and I will go home and nap, eat, go see some band and drink beer. Tonight though he's going to Austin for a gig and I'm staying home and finishing the tape I owe Ethan.

Samantha, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

friday night means socialising for me unless I have an assignment. Tonight I was leching away at the pub/cafe, my friend Steve wanted me to tell him about all the lush boys so he could live vicariously. There was not much there except his flatmate chris was wearing a muscle t shirt so I got to disturb everyone I know by making lurid tongue movements.

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Leave between five and six. Have no plans for drinking tonight. Am thinking of going to TATE MODERN to look at arse, but can't find anyone to go with so there is a strong chance I shall go home, try and do some tidying and lie on my bed feeling particularly braindead. IT COULD GET WORSE: I could drink the Piat D'Or in our fridge. Maybe I will just go to sleep. Aaah, sleep. I love my bed so much. The best thing is to go to pub STRATE FROM WORK but no such jums today. I quite fancy doing some shopping but do not know where to find a SATCHEL. John Lewis doesn't have any, as I found when I visited their emporium this lunchtime. They haf nice GLOVES though.

Sarah, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this evening there is a good chance i shall be porting my home computer to the guy who mends it, as it has taken poorly

this is a pain in many ways

mark s, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We finish at 6 on Fridays, but only after some peculiar enforced jollity. Each week, a member of staff/a department "sponsors" Friday night drinks, and from 5pm we're allowed to enjoy it. However, under no circumstances are we able to leave the office before 6. My boss, however, disapproves of the Friday frolics and thinks less of one should they slope off to reception for drinkies at 5.01.

I tend not to join in, partly because (as mentioned in a previous thread) I have few close chums at work, partly because of my boss, but mainly because an individual beer makes me feel a bit sicky if I then wait hours before the next one.

After work, I'll either: go to the KoC; go home, open a bottle of Wolf Blass, order a curry and watch decent telly (low-level hedonism to a tee); or go out and do fantastically exciting things with cool, cool people. A bit like last Friday, really.

Mark C, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I officially finish at 5:30 but frankly I cannot be arsed today and have to take stuff up to the other building which will wait til Monday morning. So shall now faff for a couple of hours, maybe buy a record then end up at the pub with Tom and others to talk about you lot.

Pete, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Officially 4:15. Unofficially 3:59.

Kodanshi, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Officially 5.30pm But unofficially 8pm. Sob.

Paul Strange, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For God's sake, Pete and Tom, don't let this lot think we have nothing better to talk about than them. Instead I shall regale you all with tales of our holiday and how Pete was nearly too scared to ride on the elephant.

Emma, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The head of Finance has told us all we can go home at 4.30 today, huzzah! I should really stay until 6.00, having rather a lot to do at the moment, but...

Madchen, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To Will miles up the thread: I am, but I do have my own office (don't tell anyone). This is compensation for some of the manifest deficiencies of my department. Most terms I do some teaching here as well.

Ellie, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was still traumatised by the gun incident to go anywhere near the uncomfortable danger of riding an elephant. But I manfully took charge of the beast later though.

Pete, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you trying to tell me you joined the Mile High Wanking club?

Emma, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

WAAAAH I have tons to do and bet I will be here 4EVAH! Can I have sympathy please?

If not, anyone who wants to deliver pints to me in Whitehall is more that welcome, you wuvvly people you....

Sarah, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SHAG even my BOSS haf gone home now and I haf not had a chance to get her to sign my timesheet!!!!! Arrghhh!!!!!

Sarah, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pete and Emma had FUN TIMES and we did not. I am mad. I will crash their next vacation unbidden.

Work ends the moment I walk in the office, usually.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Joined that club on the way to Mexico last year. And the Transit Lounge wanking club too. What else is there to do in Houston except knock one out or watch Celebrity Squares?

Pete, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey, Ned, if you consider being threatened by minor gangsters and being on the same plane as an onanistc Pete to be fun times you are a very funny chap indeed. However we did have other fun times.

Emma, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So long as I got to observe all that from a safe distance, sure!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

work?

james, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Officially school's out at 2:35 or 2:37, I have quiz league until 3:30 or 4:00, and then I'm gone. Lately I go somewhere and talk with a friend for a little while and then go home and relax (usually only one friend, but today two because one of them had a car and we wanted a ride).

Maria, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm always shaky and weird on Fridays cos I always go out Thursdays. I've fuck all lectures. Tonight I'm staying in out of tiredness and just general crankiness. It's been an up down sort of week.

Ronan, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fridays are my one day for wallowing in sloth before weekend/work starts. Hopefully my synapses are atrophying as we speak.

turner, Friday, 9 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I finished at 10 AM this week. Perhaps I'd best explain: I am a temp traffic surveying for the highways agency (actually no one actually knows who for sure but it sounds better that way) and if the police don't turn up to stop cars you can't really do much can you? And we still got paid for the twelve hours! I like temping at the moment.
