Come soon to the Vatican Tree House: "No gurls aloud"

Huck, Saturday, 31 July 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't understand how anyone can take the Catholic church seriously when it talks about family and marriage and what's proper -- they fuck little boys!!

Maria D. (Maria D.), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"[The Catholic Church] is one of the most emotionally illiterate organisations I know, and they need to put their own house in order first."

So true.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"distortions" - oh teh funnie. "You have strayed from the true path of...erm..political conservatism, as laid down by Jesus...erm...in the Bible..oh shit we don't have a case do we?"

Bumfluff, Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think their next document should address the "distortions" brought about by parliamentary democracy, human rights, free speech/freedom of thought and science.

Bumfluff, Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

rough translation: "oh shit, if gender roles aren't god breathed and based on reality then maybe other cultural artifacts aren't natural either. quick! back in the closet"

mouse (mouse), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Slightly off-topic, but how long do you all give the Pope to live? I thought he'd already have kicked it by now.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

A catholic friend of mine says the pope has filled the vatican with conservative cardinals. So it could get much worse.
Where do you all think the next pope will come from?
Will there be an american pope?

Newshound, Saturday, 31 July 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Whats interesting is that this pope has actually spoken well of embodiement theology, namely that the body is holy and good, tyhat it is a gift from god and that its pleasures are also gods gift, i wrote an essay about a year ago where i wondered out loud when embodied theology would hit the brick wall of gender essentalism, suprised it was this short a time. The cheap paedo jokes really dont give enough respect to how dangerous this theology is.

anthony, Saturday, 31 July 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

& certain radical femminsits (greer among them) have said things about sex/gender that are fairly close to what the vatican is saying now

anthony, Saturday, 31 July 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

So has Dennis the Menace.

Huck, Saturday, 31 July 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there basically no option for the next Pope other than calling for a Third Vatican Council then?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 31 July 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Radical feminism? Um, doesn't the pope realize the heyday of that was the 70s?

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 31 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

this isnt radical femminism though, this is gender studies, which is actually fairly new.

anthony, Saturday, 31 July 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm constantly shocked by the free ride the vatican and the various country level archbishops are given when intefering in parliamentary democracy. it might be my anglican upbgringing with its de facto suspicion of catholics and their "plots" but i cant' think of another international organisation with tax-free status, a brutally inhuman conservative bent, a violent dislike of non-adherents taht is treated by the press as a saintly voice above questioning.

Anthony (Plato Guy), Sunday, 1 August 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

But they're old people so it's kind of cute!

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 1 August 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

but in seriousness, there are many reasons why I personally cannot stand organized religion and this is one of them.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 1 August 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it is cute! look at this!

caitlin hell (caitxa), Sunday, 1 August 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm looking at that photo on a really old and 8-bitty monitor, and at first glance I supposed the pope to be seated waist-deep in some kind of formaldahyde or gelatin or summat. Weird.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Sunday, 1 August 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The Vatican can choke on a bag of dicks. But I think they'd rather enjoy that...

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 1 August 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

depends on the dick vintage. I hear they're especially fond of the '89 - '94 harvest, especially the sweet and extra-virgin types.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Sunday, 1 August 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

making outraged mumours and bad jokes doesnt seriously engage with theology.

anthony, Sunday, 1 August 2004 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

some might argue that's hardly necessary until the Vatican chooses to seriously engage with reality. It IS a joke, that's why we're laughing. The idea that we're supposed to wait to be socially progresive until the Vatican thinks its okay is obviously farcical;
especially for the billion or so people in poorer densely populated countries suffering under the deadly hand of these fules.
And don't make a comparism to other religions because I don't care.
I'm not biased; christianity is being failed by the catholic church.

Pointing out the good things being done by certain sections and people within that organization isn't going to change my mind either.

Bumfluff, Sunday, 1 August 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

not mentioned in this article ... the vatican is also considering changing names, from "the roman catholic church" to "the he-man woman haters' club."

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 1 August 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting to see what Pope Mel will do.

dave q, Sunday, 1 August 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope the next pope chooses (because you know J-P II real name is Karol, Popes get to choose their pope-name, I think, or someone chooses it) to be named Pope Sharon Muhallah Lipschitz Shabbazz III, just to fuck people up.

Huck, Sunday, 1 August 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what I'm going to do now.
I'm sorta bound by duty to attend Mass later on today, but I don't want to.
I wish I could abstain, but I can't.
In the list of priorities I have in my life, groups I use to identify myself, being a member of my family is # 1. Being a woman is # 2. Being a Catholic is # 7. Second almost always beats seventh.
I feel like I've been ripped off. Multiple times recently, sure, but this is just the most recent, and it hurts.

What am I going to do?

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 1 August 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel sorry for you Dee, it's always easy for us non-religious folks to crack jokes about senile Popes and paedo priests, and at the same forget that is the biggest religious community in the world, and it means a helluva lot to millions of people. My biggest concern is how this'll affect those Third World catholic countries, especially in Latin America, where women's rights aren't as firmly established as in the the West, and where feminist struggles are therefore more urgent. I can't see this document doing that much damage in Europe or North America. Of course, Latin America has always had it's ways of reinterpreting the Catholic dogma with regards to the local conditions and problems, like in the Theology of Liberation, but still...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 1 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Given that the document in question hasn't been published yet I would suggest waiting and reading it in full rather than reacting to a BBC Online article (if their science coverage is anything to go by the article won't bear any resemblance to the subject matter).

I had a look on the Vatican website and couldn't find the full text of the letter to bishops, but if it does indeed indicate that "the Pope has also called for more respect for working women, and taken a first step towards breaking the male hold on the Vatican bureaucracy", "The Vatican supports a greater role for women in the governance of the Church" and makes statements such as "In order to avoid the domination of one sex or the other, their differences tend to be denied" and "Women should not be stigmatised if they do not have a job" then it looks at least slightly progressive to me.

Kudos on the paedo jibes though, it's a well known fact that every single kiddie tamperer in the history of the fucking world is a Catholic priest.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Sunday, 1 August 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the stats say that priests are most likely to fuck 17/18 yr olds, and that they have a lower rate of padephillia then other similar professions (ie teachers and boyscout leaders)

anthony, Sunday, 1 August 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

making outraged mumours and bad jokes doesnt seriously engage with theology.

Neither does habitually defiling women.

Dee, I was raised a Catholic and I remember loving the community feeling of attending mass. (In retrospect, I think I just loved getting to hang out with my cousins every Sunday.) Then I got older, learned a bit of stuff about Catholicism and its views on women and homosexuals, and rebuked a lot of my Catholic upbringing. Then I got older still and realized I don't need Catholicism to pray/worship/believe/whatever you want to call it.
