I fully intend to do nothing at work all day.

It's a temp job, and all my bosses and coworkers save one are gone this week. I fully intend to piss away seven hours (or rather, the six hours that are left in the work day) sending emails and listening to "New Kind of Neighborhood" on my headphones.

tending to nothing is a worthy goal, go in peace child.

Just remember to report here how your day progresses.

Judging by your posting output ams, I don't really see how much of a change this is.

Yes! We are brothers in arms! There's a website about temping somewhere, it's pretty funny, but I can't find it...Temping sucks.

Richard K (Richard K), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i take umbrage at that, nickalicious. ocassionally i do two even three hours of work at my temp job. my ilx posting rate tends to rise and fall depending on how much i am enjoying whatever job i have.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

is whats-her-face still leaning over the cubicle barrier and cooing Doobie Bros lyrics to you or whatever crazy stuff she did?

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

she left early today wahey

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 2 August 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I did this for about 4 months once. Was watching Office Space the other day and the part where he said "in any given week, I probably do about 15 minutes of actual work" rang so true.

oops (Oops), Monday, 2 August 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm... 15 minutes of actual work...

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

that's 5 minutes more than me

My work is in a bit of a limbo, all I have to do is sort out books. Where'd all the visitors go?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So, amateur1st, what's it like living my professional life?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually did work all morning.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

But I returned here to make sweet, sweet love with the internet trolls.

Making paperclip bracelets doesn't count as work Am.

what about sculpting castles with eraser shavings?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, that passes.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yesterday: nothing.
Today so far: nothing.
And I'm not even really neglecting anything I should be doing. I just have almost nothing to do.
Taking sides: Not having anything to do vs. asking for something to do and getting some bullshit pointless busy work.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ah crap, i just learned that a job i had applied for got filled.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THIS JOB IS

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

hey hey DEAN buddy i knew you'd come! and i see you've brought your old friend "i don't even know..." with you! hold on, i'll bring you something to drink. what's your poison?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, doing nothing all day is depressing the shit out of me. I feel guilty for doing nothing despite the fact that I have very little to do and the fact that no one here cares.
OK I'll stop whining now.

Je trouve cette offensive. Si je perds mon temps ici elle sera à l'fin de vous améliorer tout. Soyez reconnaissant vous les merdes ignorantes.

Krankenhaus, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, St Nick, I know that feeling! Is way awful.

And the clock always stops :(

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

well, dean, sorry for overposting. the origin of the "who are you?" meme came from the fact that you seemed to be insulting me without cause, and i was wondering if i had insulted you at some point and had forgotten it. but it seems as though you have simply chosen not to allow me to post on ilx without responding with one of several putdowns. not sure why this is the case. perhaps i will choose to take a break, perhaps not. but your baiting me repeatedly won't necessarily make me go away, if that's what you desire (for whatever reason).

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

stay on topic

I have lots to do, but after weeks of having lots of specific tasks to do, all of a sudden I have the week to learn as much as I can about a specific part of our software. It's way too free-form for me, I'm finding it incredibly difficult to focus. Thanks ILX.

Yeah, I'm not sure why Amateur1st gets derision for being the top poster and Ned only gets good-natured ribbing.

Ned is NICE

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I didn't even have this goal and I'm halfway there to filling it! I've just been completely spaced out today at work. My pile just keeps growing bigger. And I feel like everyone on the other side of the phone can hear my lack of motivation because they have been saying things like, "Ok, then, I'll be waiting by my FAX machine today for your response," or, "Ok, then I'll be hearing from you by the end of the day, right?" BWAH HA HA!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

well my being "top poster" is an abberation owing to having unusually little to do at an unusually boring job. many among you will be happy to know that it won't last too long.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

random question: is "fumiko" a male or female name?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds ummm female to me.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i need to be sure.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well maybe you should ask someone who actually knows stuff.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Thread is the problem with the economy.

(I didn't do anything today, either. However, I'm very clever, and no one will ever doubt that I have done much, and well. I hope they never find out how fast I can actually do the work I'm given.)
