US terror alert: Are you worried?

Newshound, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

NY Times reporting similar story this morning:
"The information, which officials said was indicative of preparations for a possible truck- or car-bomb attack, left significant gaps. It did not clearly describe the suspected plot, indicate when an attack was to take place nor did it describe the identities of people involved."

Surprise, surprise - a red herring to take attention away from the Democratic Convention....

"Federal authorities said on Monday that they had uncovered no evidence that any of the surveillance activities described in the documents was currently under way. They said officials in New Jersey had been mistaken in saying on Sunday that some suspects had been found with blueprints and may have recently practiced "test runs'' aimed at the Prudential building in Newark."

This manipulation is getting ridiculous..

Surprise, surprise - a red herring to take attention away from the Democratic Convention....

which has been over for 3 days. i don't get it.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

But the discussions about the convention and the platform were still going on until the "threat" was announced.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

did I just hear on tv that tom ridge came out and said "it's hard to know how much of this is real and how much of it is politics"? Is he al pissed off?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

He's resigning at the end of this term.. (At least, I think that's what I heard..)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the other day he interrupted his warning to show his support for teh bush. literally said that 'thanks to our presidnet' we have this intel. it's pretty transparent.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

it looks like he didn't actually say what I just quoted, at least as far as I can tell. damn you matt lauer!

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Daily Show had a good bit on this last night. Jon began with talking about the aftermath of the DNC, then was cut short by "oh wait, terror alert!"

Kingfish von Bandersnatch (Kingfish), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle - it was dean that said that.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

which has been over for 3 days. i don't get it.

the line you responded to should have read attention from the impact of the DNC. Kerry went up in the horserace in almost all the polls, increased his standing with key groups in the electorate, and dramatically improved opinion of himself compared to Bush on multiple issues and characteristics. Moreover, the weekend following the convention is traditionally the time when the 'bounce' is at its highest - when the convention really sinks in for people - this was timed precisely.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i read that kerry's "bounce" was one of the smallest ever.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

not surprisingly, since the number of undecided voters seems pretty damned small this year.

however, having the GOP talk about how Kerry should get/have gotten a 15-ppoint bounce from this(which was never possible, due to the reason mentioned above) doesn't help things.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The bounce was small because there are fewer undecided voters in this election. The possibility for bounce was low.

(I heard that on NPR prior to the convention...)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the line you responded to should have read attention from the impact of the DNC...

that makes more sense, thanks. although i think you may be overestimating how much attention is actually being paid to the presidential race. in my unscientific observations it seems the only people who are paying attention right now are those who have already made up their minds.

same goes for terror warnings, no one cares if they aren't directly involved. if the sears tower or bank one plaza had been named chicago would be in a full blown panic, as it is hardly anyone gives it more than a passing thought.

it's weird and it's sad.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I occasionally have to check myself - that people aren't as interested in politics as I am .. and that their priorities are different. (I.e. it's more important to some people that gay people don't marry than that their town has jobs..) Because I'm constantly wondering why there is even a race this time around.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the sears tower or bank one plaza had been named

whatWHAT? WHO? WHERE? Don't blow up the nice buildings, you bad people!

*goes back to sleep*

Kenan (kenan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

how is saying that it takes 3 days for Kerry's speech to sink in with voters overestimating how much attention people pay to the race?

more on the bounce here

having the GOP talk about how Kerry should get/have gotten a 15-ppoint bounce from this(which was never possible, due to the reason mentioned above) doesn't help things

right - Matthew Dowd (Bush's pollster) predicted that Kerry would have a lead from which no sitting President has recovered, i.e. he managed expecations by predicting that Kerry would win three months early

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Now we have a claim that there's intent to attack on Sept. 2 (the night of Bush's convention speech) or thereabouts. What a great way to get people to watch your convention.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Tune in to tonight's Rollerball, people, 'cuz it'll be NO-SUBSTITUTIONS NIGHT! Somebody is gunna fuckin' die, on camera!

Campaign Desk talked about Newsweeks' poll and it's little bounce:

...The only thing the political press loves more than a scandal is a poll. And Newsweek this past weekend did no one any favors by releasing a poll immediately after the convention that many have interpreted as a measure of Kerry's post-convention bounce in popularity -- even though half of the poll was conducted before Kerry's speech accepting the nomination on Thursday night.

The Newsweek web exclusive published on Saturday, July 31, revealed what it termed a "baby bump," with Kerry's support growing by 4 percent over his pre-convention number. Fair enough, except that Newsweek, as others have already pointed out, conducted part of the poll on Thursday -- before Kerry's speech. While Newsweek did not classify its poll as "post-convention," it asserted the "bounce" to be the smallest in the history of the Newsweek poll. Most readers (and journalists), however, associate the term "bounce" with a post-convention boost. The misnomer was so obvious that even Republican commentator Joe Scarborough told Don Imus that he "wish[ed] Newsweek would run their poll throughout the weekend..."

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If I were the suspicious type I would see all this as a good excuse to not let protesters anywhere near the Republican convention in New York. They will probably put them all in New Jersey.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Report of new HVTs captured. Just like they told us.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

scott, that would make sense if it was, y'know, August 29th (though it may happen then).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i suspect that in later decades there will be a thorough accounting of this nonsense. i wish it could happen now, but it won't.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard Clarke, Paul O'Neill and Bob Woodward are just some of the names that come to mind who've done it already, amateur!st.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

well, yes, to some extent. but there's a whole strata of classified material that would probably shed even more light on the political nature of this "intelligence" that we'll be prohibited from seeing for some time to come. also i sort of meant a *legal* accounting, as in watergate.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope there is a more open investigation during the Kerry administration. And we can only hope that it serves to clean house in the Republican party. Not that I want them to, but if Republicans were to get back into power, I would like it if they could have some integrity.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"stratum"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Our country is safer today than it was on September the 11th, 2001"

notice the precision of the oft-repeated phrase. think that could be because terrorists aren't killing 2900 Americans today?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

They have two things left - Fear and Disgust

point taken.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Daily Show had a good bit on this last night.

(Excellent Secret of My Success, btw)

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason that joke made me think of huck.

probably because that's the kind of obscure reference he would dig up.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh maybe you meant "whole strata" though. God, how annoying, sorry.

it's incredible how dutifully BushCo are martialling the exact responses one would imagine the "freedom haters" would want to see.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Does the administration think that "terrorists" are going to try and kill every single American citizen?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Some Republicans don't buy timing

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey all I know is that a three-man squad of body-armored cops with submachine guns during the morning commute makes me feel safer already. Lucky those are blue states, huh.

"Terror Warning Is Said to Lead to New Arrests"
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/05/politics/05terror.html?th

Gosh, with all these recent captures of Qaeda members, they should be able to catch bin Laden within, I dunno, 2½ months?
