Is the process better than the result?

I often think of life as making plans, moving forward. But when I actually get somewhere or achieve what I set out to do, it doesn't feel as good as I thought it would. For me writing is better than the book, painting is better than the picture etc...

Do you feel this way? Or do you take more pride in what you achieve than the act of getting there?

Ideally, I think being in a perpetual state of process would be better. I.E. as soon as one thing is finished, I have something else to work on!

for me = exact opposite. book always a relief compared to the writing, etc. i'm a lazy sod, what can i say?

It depends on what you're processing. One of the things I never expected to revel in so much after the completion thereof was being able to promote shows and volunteer at an all-ages indie/rock/art venue for a year. Many of the bands I helped out (Pinback, Oxes, Bright Eyes, Lexaunculpt, Phthalocyanine, Straight To Video, Watt, etc.) are doing great and are stronger than ever.. and it feels good to say that I was possibly a small part of that. While actually working the show at the time (and often doing sound) was anything but cuddly. Sweaty, yes.

If the result is not immediate, I hate waiting, but I can't decide between the process and the result.

I'm confused.. either:
A) I came off too much as a namedropper
B) Your taunting my modesty (or lack thereof)
C) You hate Bright Eyes

Don't worry Brian! Keith hates Bright Eyes. Don't start him off on Modest Mouse either.

C)?

I mean I thought bright eyes was indie-rock fallguy #1 in these popist parts.

one year passes...

Sex is better than orgasm.
Painting is better than having a painting.
Writing a story is, often, more fun that having it written.
But eating is often better than cooking.

"To travel hopefully is better than to arrive" - I think that was Robert Louis Stevenson.

Not sure I agree, mind.

Anyone who loves the process of writing must have never written anything of much length. I hate it more every day!

Dan I., Friday, 8 August 2008 10:27 (seventeen years ago)

The only thing good about it is that it ends.
