it is a bit rub, isn't it?

matt dc (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm a wittle tiny mouse.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

it's rub if you want to talk about the ph of something or a frequency in mhz or a good thing or old father time.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think i like this, my fingers want to hit the shift key. let's see how i feel after a full stop. oh pretty bad.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

it's weird because i used to write like this all the time but now it feels like running my nails down a blackboard. however i still use no caps if on a real time forum like aim or something. (arrgh i inadvertantly capitalised aim them and had to change it back).

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

capital letters suck, think they're so big - i now only use them for nouns, occasionally

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to write like this, too.

e-mails, mostly.

and poetry! oh, the poetry.

but: there's something much more pleasing about the correct orthography when yer trying to argue a point. it just makes you look more authoritative, i guess.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to be really particular about putting in full stops. i think it was an obsessive-compulsive thing.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to type no-caps online because, i mean, who cared, yes? but then i noticed how badly my typing for essays and papers had deteriorated that i quickly reverted to proper puncutation and orthography and a minimum of interweb abbrevations.

ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

it loses the periodic digital rhythms of reaching for the shift key.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it all depends on my current level of laziness/sleepiness/drunkeness.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry cutty. please forgive me. accept this fleet of horses as a token of my remorse.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

its the internet man, i could type like this all day even though in sms i actually punctuate correctly. dammit i keep wanting to capitalise my i's.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

u r all gay

NOPE! DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME RING!!

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i always type like this on all forums and in all personal emails. is it awfully annoying? i don't think i'd be able to break the habit now, it's bloody difficult doing it in proper work 'n' that emails

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get this at all, it feels like i'm whispering or something, what's the point? aside from finding it easier, which is a great reason. oh i can't spell as well either. ok i'm stopping

bell hooks (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the first posts i contributed to the ilxiverse was written without caps, though it was inadvertently. i was at a terminal at school with a really ancient keyboard that was rather difficult to operate to begin with, but just would not budge when it came to the shift key or caps lock. but i really wanted to find out information on a particular musical artist, so type i did.

wow, this was actually quite cool. i feel like my fingers aren't having to work as much by having to reach over and depress that shif-- uh, wait a second. this is the laziest shit i've ever thought in my life. no way, i'll stick to capitalizing correctly.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i do this sometimes. please don't take the piss :-(

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i do it all the time dog latin. *shrug* i am lazy, i've come to terms with it.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

what fucking difference does it make? if it's in english and i can read it i don't give a shit on message boards and e-mail at least ffs.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ok breathe aaron ;)

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't stick to one orthography either. fuck the hataz. orthography. nice word. I think I'll have to create some opportunities to drop it into conversation.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

me hulk smash orthographer!

hmmm...doen't seem very menacing and hulklike in "no-cap style"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

hey baby wanna come up and check out my orthography?

hmm, that doesnt work does it.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(tho maybe that worked for oops, heh heh)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like when i'm typing really fast. actually no, it's not, because i can use caps correctly even when in a rush. it actually feels really awkward not to use proper capitalisation. arrrrgh

That's enough. I can't take it anymore. Phew.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i just like go with the moment and the context of the thread and the vibes and stuff and life is beautiful and just waiting for you to live it and for you to love everyone and be groovy and plur and we are all one and oh yeah i need more drugs woooooooooo!!!!!!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i thought "oh this will be easy i type in lowercase all the time on msn being lazy" but Ive discovered I capitalize I's and now I am hitting shift at all the wrong moments ack ack. I can't type for shite.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i sorta misrepresented the nonusage of capital letters there in that post up above, you know, the last one i made. for *me*, non-capitalization would be a lazy endeavor, purely because i (damn, just capitalized that and had to change it) capitalize by default. hell, i even have problems with *word contractions* -- even in an aim environment i will spell out approximately 95% of the words i use. i think i've only managed to introduce 'obv' into my chatting lexicon, and there are still times when i will find that a bit... wrong. so it's merely personal. really.

ok, i'll stop this now.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

hulk smash correct orthography

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

there are settings in which i get all orthographically lazified. usually emails/msgs between folks on shit like myspace/txt msgs/etc. i am a consistently inconsistent person, and occasionally my typing will reflect this.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

with some people it seems to happen completely naturally. with other people, it is more of a struggle, or even an impossibility.

i think that i am in the latter camp. i have to physically stop myself from reaching for the caps key when i type the letter 'i'.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't mind when other people do it. like i said, i used to do it. it just doesn't feel right to me anymore.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

much has been made of the fact that the first person pronoun i is rendered in upper case in english and no other languages....there's been much speculation as to what it says about english (and the english).

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it feels wrong and i just had to restrain myself from reaching for the shift key to capitalise 'i'. it seems (there again) like i type more or less how i speak normally, and that is with a proper english received pronounciation accent and correct grammar et c. for the most part. it feels strange doing this and as if i might slide into omg wtf teen-territory at any second. i'm a big fan of correct punctuation too, which measures out writing as it does speech. not overly thrown by people who don't use it, although it can take slightly longer to grasp their point if it's ambiguous due to lack of whatever.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

if we don't capitalize the first person pronoun, singular, it'll get lost amongst all the ins, its, etc... rubbish. mark h, i think it says the english are overcompensating.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

mark, i've always wondered whether in fact that just arose from wanting to avoid confusion with 'i' meaning 'in'? what does the noun capitalisation in german 'mean', also?

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I just realized that this thread is comletely ridiculous. Ooh ooh look at me, I'm using proper punctation and orthography! What are you going to do to me now? Hm? Omg I'm so cheating! Ha ha!
