discuss likelihood (and possible implacations) of this event taking place.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

In exchange for Maniche, right?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i would imagine arsenal would not sell him had they not lined up a quality replacement, so yeah, probably...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

patrick vieira's shirt

Wonder if this will still happen at Real?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's rumored that River Plate's Javier Mascherano was in today for a physical. He'd be the second 20-year-old defensive midfielder Wenger buys this summer - if true, I (unfortunately) sort of doubt there would be a Xabi or Maniche or someone more established to come. Instead, I guess Mascherano would fight it out w/edu, gilberto, flamini.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

these unheard-of (in uk and ireland) players that wenger snaps up have a habit of being excellent (i do believe vieira was one such player back in the day), but still. arsenal have not performed sensibly this summer, and should vieira leave, i will tip chelsea to overtake them (united having not bought ambitiously enough to paper over last season's gaping cracks).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

arsenal (with vieira)
chelsea
man united
arsenal (without vieira)
liverpool
newcastle
middlesborough

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

That's plausible, weasel.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the guardian made the good point that arsenal beat Inter 5-1 without Viera. there are roumours the "no comment" is because of plans to land maniche.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

and anyway, the most interersting phenomena in english football is how michael ricketts firepower will lead Leeds Untied to their first tropy in 12 years.

matthew james (matthew james), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

?

Ricketts is at middlesbrough innee?

de, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(nope, moved to leeds in the close season, its certainly possible that he will score plenty and leeds get promoted, but we shall wait and see)

"the guardian made the good point that arsenal beat Inter 5-1 without Viera."

i don't think that was a good point made by the the guardian. of course arsenal are capable of good performances when he's absent, but over the course of a season, the great performances will be less *frequent* without a player as important and influential as vieira.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

claude makelele:
"he was 40% of
the arsenal team"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

He is one of the world's great players, and I think the best in his role, but Edu and Gilberto, even if the youngsters come to nothing (and Wenger has a good hit-rate), are still a hell of a strong pairing. I'm not sure about Chelsea - I have no clear image of how they'll play and who'll be in the side most often yet. Man Utd will be better this year, I think.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It will happen. He's overrated anyway.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Also one of the tabs was reporting that Freddie Ljungberg wants to leave as well, but he's dispensible for the Arse these days I feel.

I hope they come 3rd in the Premiership and drop out of the Champions League early. Henry, Pires and friends take the sale of Viera as a sign of the club's lack of ambition and bugger off to other continental clubs. Arsenal then fail to qualify for the Champions League, Wenger leaves, they have a mediocre season and the vast amount of money they owe for that big stadium takes them down.

I would dearly, dearly love for this to happen.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

would bluddy luv it

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you want to put some money on that scenario, Matt?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr C- just how is he 'overrated'?!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

hello and welcome to...
"You've been trolled"

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

van nistelrooy once rated him as "having no class" which was clearly an understatement.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, there has been some trolling here pp but since Dr C said it I thought he might have a reason.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 5 August 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was good when he was winding Roy Keane up in the tunnel one time.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 5 August 2004 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe not as much overrated as I think his influence on the Arse's success is overrated. Obv a lot of games are won and lost in m/field - you need to win the ball and keep it. BUT they get Henry, Pires etc are so efficient at taking chances that they win a lot of games. Their defence is pretty good too, and allows them to cover up for dodgy Lehmann. I'd argue you could have put the likes of Savage, Gravesen, Butt in there as ballwinner and it wouldn't have made much difference.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't say I'd be gutted if he left the English game. He's just not quite as good as everyone seems to think he is.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 5 August 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Dr C and Mark are underrating him. I think he's a better ball-winner than anyone else in the game, probably, and he contributes more going forward than most of the other contenders too - the pace with which he often brings the ball out from a defensive position is very important in a lot of Arsenal attacks.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
Haha!

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

To Juve, right?

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

has something happened?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Not yet, but he is apparently completing a medical. Juve.

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

13.75 million pounds. decent money?

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Viera to Juve

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

29 years old. Not bad money.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

BBC radio just described him as "talismatic".

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

£13.25 makes sense for a player who hasn't been at top form for 18 months. But I don't think Arsene is a little too sale happy at the moment.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

*I do think

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

So Cesc and Flamini are starting next season?

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I feel sorry for the kitman at Juve.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Is Gilberto still there? I don't think Gilberto and Fabregas is a bad central midfield - but it's hard to see the sale of Edu and Viera being an improvement, and there is a lot of ground to make up.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

mahmadou Diarra is supposedly on his way from Lyon, he's not bad but he's pretty young iirc

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 14 July 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

How old was Vieira when he joined Arsenal? 22?

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

21

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

no, must have been 20!

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

He is an excellent player, the sort of player I always like, a Davids/Keane footballing midfielder who could also shoot, but I'm sure he is far from a pleasant, likeable individual.

Felix Leiter (nordicskilla), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I hate to say this, but Arsenal are selling him at the right time. That sort of money for a player a season past his best is good business (see also Man U-Beckham). Gilberto is more vital to the Arse than Viera - look at the way players got through that midfield in his absence.

A midfield of Gilberto and Fabregas will be just good enough to ensure they finish third :)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

See also Didi Hamann, Claude Makelele, the real reason why England are rubbish in international tournaments etc etc.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

Who are the top 5 Midfield Generals in the Premiership now that Vieira's gone and Roy Keane is fading.

watch out for Portsmouth's new midfield guvnor:

John Viafara

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

it's nice i can find common cause w/ a Spurs fan on this thread - Matt DC OTM! two years ago i would've been gutted abt Viera but after a while you do get sick of someone - even someone 'talismanic' - who so obv wants to be ELSEWHERE (tho' i don't think viera's made the move that will win him that champions league medal)

wenger is very very good at letting players go at just the right time - Petit, Overmars, Seaman etc

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

even though they could have got 10m more for him this time last year?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

its a balancing act though - just won the championsip and were on that run.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 15 July 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

ten years pass...
