Shirayuki Amasake is v. nice. Especially warmed up in cold weather. It has a hell of a kick, too.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 6 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

cold unfiltered is the only way i like it. it's a lot sweeter and easier to drink. warm filtered stuff just feels like i'm drinking rubbing alcohol.

we have some in the fridge at home that i heard is good. will report back after work.

and how weird is it that salmon is sake in japanese also. we asked the waitress the other day the differences in pronounciation and heard none.

Anyone in the Bay Area should go tasting at the Takara sake brewery! (there's also a sake museum).

Hitori Musume Junmainigori Sake - The most traditional and complex Nigori out there at this price (~$20/720mL).

The brewery is in Berkeley, btw.

unfiltered sake is the most palatable varietal, sometimes it is overly sweet (cf: what many vineyards do with white zin aka "the kool-aid of wine"). i believe it is not truly unfiltered but coarse/rough-filtered otherwise you'd end up with a lot of good in your cup/masu.

where do you live toby?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This guy runs the only sake store in the USA (scant blocks from my house). I think he carries about 10-15 brands of unfiltered sake, but it's not cheap.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"end up with a lot of good" = end up with a lot of GOOP

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

also: good sake is never served warm. the hot stuff you get for cheap is warmed up to disguise the impurities.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

but what if sometimes I still enjoy it?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 6 August 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

well yeah, i meant "good" aka "premium" sake. i mean, i drink sparks at JaX0n's house until the break of dawn, what do i know?

the ozeki stuff that comes in the box that you top load into the heating machine is kinda nasty, i guess in moderation it can be okay but it is very easy to burn out just being around it.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 August 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i live in london. i suspect it can't be too hard to find good sake, i just don't know where to begin.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Never, ever follow unfiltered sake with red wine, as I did two nights ago. BAAAAD NEWS.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but what else are you supposed to do after drinking two bottles of the stuff and STILL not feeling anything?

"Connoisseurs of this palely pungent rice wine pretend they can discern variations in taste and quality in over fifty brands. But to the novice all sake seems to have been brewed in the same vat—a toddy, pleasant at first, cloying afterward, and not likely to echo in your head unless it is devoured by the quart, a habit many of Japan's bons vivants have adopted." Truman Capote, "The Duke in His Domain," The New Yorker, 1957

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

bottled sake is rated on a dryness scale, i think it's one to nine.

xpost: i have a feeling in truman capote's day, drinking two bottles of anything and not feeling it was de rigeur.

Naw, I felt it. I just ran out of it and wanted to , uh, keep the "vibe" going.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I find that getting buzzed or even drunk on sake is infinitely more enjoyable than doing the same with beer, wine, or hard liquor. I feel far better after it wears off, none of the heaviness of beer. It's a smoother ride, all the way, even the cheap stuff.
