I'm thinking of signing up to one. Can anyone recommend a good one, or one to avoid?

avoid A Major One because the review copy they use is RED with the BLOOD of EXPLOITED FREELANCERS. i will return to explain this in depth.

Not sure about that, but we use blockbusters. One of their dvds was busted once, but it's been fine since. I wouldn't think too much about it though, just pick one & away you go!

Hmm, stupid pinkpanther, must read the whole title of the thread!

i found 3 or 4 with a quick google search and was drawn to one in particular because of their long list of things i'd like to see (more your foreign films and Dr Who dvds than your usual american blockbusters). and then i did nothing more about it and forgot all the names, sorry.

My colleague heartily recommends Scree Select.

Scree Select - T/S: gravel, mud or boulders. Doh.

Qflicks has a great selection (apparently every DVD in print in the UK) but I'm thinking about cancelling since every other disc I get from them is scratched and won't play right. I've finally just watched 25th Hour on the third attempt.

In general the problem is the fixed-rateness. I know that some months I watch lots of rental DVDs, other months not. They all seem to charge about 15 quid per month, which isn't that much given that Blockbusters etc charge about 3.50 per dvd.

http://www.dvdtrials.co.uk/ looks useful.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 5 August 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

that raises the good point that right now you may as well drift from free trial to free trial.

I've been using http://www.dvds365.com/ and I've been very impressed with the speed at which they get DVDs out to you.
Of course I do live about 10 miles away from their dispatch centre.
Anyway, they've got a really broad selection of stuff. I've had everything from the latest blockbuster, low-budget foreign language films, anime, TV sci-fi to a 3-disc documentary about the american civil war. They've got a decent selection of music dvds as well, as far as I can tell.

The Guardian's service is good. Their interface needs a tweak, but the DVDs arrive promptly and all works well.

three years pass...

i just signed up to amazon unlimited rental after having 2/3 a month for ages - and it seems quite slow. i dont want to see 'despatched soon', i want to see despatched NOW! if its not there, then select another dvd! i dont want to waste time when im paying almost a tenner each month.

amazon is merging with ilovefilm apparently.

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 8 February 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

is there anywhere that does streaming or downloads to pc? there's lovefilm but their selection is rather stingy and not growing terribly quickly.

i just did a lovefilm free trial for three months and it was good. i might try to do it again, if i get a new credit card.

lovefilm downloads is all asian violence and golf once you've watched the x-men trilogy.
