I had a dream lastnight that Bill O'Reilly was in my house and I got into fisticuffs with him, then he payed me $2000 just to keep my mouth shut.

"Well, the most important thing that I can tell all people who don't want to vote is that the vote equalizes everybody. The poorest person in the [country], for one day, is the same as the richest person in the country. Because you all have one vote."

So now he's Utopian. Or maybe the whole Florida thing didn't happen last year, and thousands of votes weren't deleted. Interesting.

um, 4 years ago, not last year.

I'd spend the dream money on expensive restaurants if I were you.

I'm happy that someone used the word "fisticuffs". It needs to come back.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer "mano a mano."

You should have held out for more money.

seven months pass...
Joy.

As part of their confrontation, O'Reilly said Letterman was guilty of oversimplifying a complicated situation.

"You're putting words in my mouth," he told Letterman at one point.

"You're putting artificial facts in your head," Letterman responded.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 October 2006 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i saw that by chance, Letterman handled him pretty well (again).
O'Reilly had to pull a specious Osama/Saddam factoid out of nowhere to stop the bleeding but he knows better than to full on assault Letterman with his usual b.s. barrage on his own show, which he could have. O'Reilly doesn't do well with people who aren't bound to listen to him with a nominal 'straight face', and even worse with funny people who don't present themselves as partisan. (o'reilly vs. letterman > o'reilly vs. jon stewart > o'reilly vs. jim lehrer)

aaaand the fact check

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 28 October 2006 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

I really wanted to see this but I fell asleep.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Saturday, 28 October 2006 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno. something about those interactions that comes off kinda bleah to me, like it's just two guys with massive egos playing to their audiences and playing their roles.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 29 October 2006 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

well that's a function of Letterman constantly backing himself out of corners by just stressing the 'im just a dumb guy' angle, disingenous but hey I don't expect political fireworks from him, just nice seeing a steamroller temporarily unable to steamroll. Dave being party to "meaty" discussions and standoffs would mean he's not doing his job(as he defines it).

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 29 October 2006 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

Hah I wonder what the Freudian interpretation of that dream should have been.

I think Letterman's pretty great at dismissing O'Reilly easily the way he should be, and I don't get why ol' Bill simply lets it happen whereas with anyone esle (cf Krugman, M Moore interviews) he gets blustery aggressive and angry. He must have a soft spot for Letterman or something, which explains why he comes back to the show after taking a beating. Or he's just a whore for the publicity.

plus, he has no power, and he's not in his defensive bunker.
