Saved from what?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 6 August 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Early balding?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 6 August 2004 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

IN THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB!
DONT THEY HAVE JESUS IN FINLAND, PAGAN SCUM!

anthony, Friday, 6 August 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

NO, FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD HE LEFT AT THE LATEST WHEN GAY MARRIAGES WERE LEGALIZED! GOOD RIDDANCE!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 6 August 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

you'd imagine so, Finland being close the sea and all..

ken c (ken c), Friday, 6 August 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha! I think we were actually one of the last regions in Europe to be converted, being so far from everything. There is even a Finnish folk hero named Lalli, who killed the first bishop sent to Finland (some Englishman called Henry) with an axe, on the ice of Lake Köyliö.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 6 August 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh, it's funny, Joe and I were actually talking about this yesterday - cause of this silly, somewhat sensationalist programme on Channel 4 lately called "PAGANS!" Joe was saying that the reason the rest of Europe considers Scandinavia so sexually liberated is because Christianity was never particularly imposed there, the negative attitudes towards sex never became indoctrinated on the same level.

Anyway, sorry, we are off topic again...

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 6 August 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i have now imagined stephen baldwin in a pagan sex orgy...thank you kate.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 6 August 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

who here has pwned steven baldwin??

ken c (ken c), Friday, 6 August 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Moi Tuomas - I thought most Finns were Lutheran. Not that I'd seen much evidence of that when I was there (and I'm moving there in September to teach some university courses, so these kind of details are important. Sort of).

Guymauve (Guymauve), Friday, 6 August 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I served him ice cream a few years ago, when I was still working in the mall downtown. He gave us a $5 tip, which my coworker and I split. He was a bit of a dick, full of swagger. I didn't recognize him at first.

We also had John Cleese in the store, which was far more exciting.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 6 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

steven is the ugly one right?

||amateur!st|| (amateurist), Saturday, 7 August 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Stephen Baldwin recently told a central PA Christian rock festival that he doesn't care if he ever makes another movie, since now his life is devoted to God.

This makes it official that no one cares if Stephen Baldwin makes another movie.

Moi Tuomas - I thought most Finns were Lutheran. Not that I'd seen much evidence of that when I was there (and I'm moving there in September to teach some university courses, so these kind of details are important. Sort of).

Most Finns are members of the Lutheran church, yes. We have a Lutheran state church, and if your parents are members of the church, you become a member too automatically (I resigned when I was 16). But the church has little influence on people's lives; very few Finns go to services except on Easter and Christmas. Most Finns do believe in some sort of deity, but ideas like reincarnation are quite popular too. We even have a word for the phenomenon where majority of the people are members of the church out of habit or tradition, whether they're actually religious or not - it's called "habitual religiousness".

You're moving here? What city will you be moving in? And what sort courses will you teach?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 8 August 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Bit late on this, Tuomas. I'm teaching at the University of Helsinki (Urban Semiotics), the Renvall Institute (Canadian Cultural Studies) and in Turku (Researching Popular Music).

three weeks pass...
NEW YORK (AP) -- Politics run deep in the Baldwin family, and right now brothers Alec and Stephen are finding themselves on opposite sides of a fiercely partisan presidential election campaign.

Alec Baldwin, 46, has long been a Democratic Party supporter. Younger brother Stephen is new to the political scene.

The 38-year-old actor, a born-again Christian, says his support for the Republican Party is less about politics and more about religion.

"My desire to be at the RNC was this goal that I have to support the candidate that I believe has the most faith," Stephen told "Access Hollywood" in an interview Tuesday. "Systematically, God is being erased and removed from our culture, our society, our government."

He added, "I think it's kind of freaky, man."

Alec, who was at the Democratic convention in Boston in July, told the syndicated entertainment TV show that he has concerns about Stephen being in a political spotlight.

"Stephen's been fairly apolitical for a long, long time. Then he embraced a born-again Christian faith, which is very near and dear to him and very real for him. As a result of that, of course, certain operatives of the Republican Party came to him and said, 'Why don't you come on over and join our unit of spokespeople who are show business?"'

Alec, who starred in the 2003 film "The Cooler," said he told Stephen: "When they are done with you, they are going to throw you in the wastebasket" and cautioned him about carefully choosing his words "when ... they stick a microphone in your face."

Will Stephen listen? Alec doesn't expect it.

"Of course, he's going to ignore my advice as he's done throughout his life," the elder Baldwin brother said.

I saw him on TV plugging family values and faith in government. It was a totally surreal experience flicking on the TV at some ungodly hour and seeing him chatting to the fox team. I wonder if all the Baldwins are saved? I hope so

one year passes...

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Actor Stephen Baldwin, brother of Emmy winner and "30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin, filed for bankruptcy in New York on Tuesday, according to a court document that says he is millions in debt.

The 43-year-old actor filed for Chapter 11 protection claiming he owes more than $2.3 million and owns a New York property valued at only $1.1 million. His wife, Kennya Baldwin, also is named in the document.

Baldwin, who has appeared in films including "The Usual Suspects" in 1995 as well as more recently in U.S. celebrity and reality television shows, owes about $1.2 million on two mortgages on the New York property and more than $1 million in taxes. He also has credit card debt, court papers showed.

A lawyer for Baldwin had no comment.

New York newspaper Newsday reported earlier this month that a homeless man who was allowed to live on Baldwin's property was arrested on heroin charges and suspected of dealing drugs.

Police told the newspaper that Baldwin, who has described himself as a born-again Christian, was shocked and just trying to do a good deed.
