please tell me there is somewhere nice to dance in la? everyone still remembers the short stop fondly. good dance tunes, intimate, cool people who are actually over 25, no electroclash. does anything like this exist? if not, i'm gonna have to start one!

I was going to see Ellen Allien there, but alas...

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 August 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer told me to go dancing at Cinespace. So I tried to get in but The Lakers were having a private party. :(

I've had a couple good times at Beauty Bar on a Thurs night. It gets packed and the hipster factor is high, but they mixed "Take Me Out" with "My Neck, My Back" and then "Ca plane pour moi" which made me happy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

according to the newyorktimes, head to koreatown!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Cinespace and Star Shoes both have good nights midweek. Actually, I never have anything to do on the weekends anymore...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Just go to Little Joy and put some Wire on the jukebox.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, same difference.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Little Joy only had country on the jukebox (or at least that's the only thing I've ever heard played there).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to go the Hispanic cowboy bar featured in the movie COLLATERAL.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

country, punk, some garage, Mexican rock, some classic rock.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I also want a cool downtown apartment like that one guy.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost. interesting, I go about once a week and it's always country (oddly, I've never actually scrolled through that jukebox).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Either way, nobody really ever dances in there.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet there are still swing dancing bars in LA.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, i need to get back there sometime. the last time was 97 i think. i wonder if hope it's changed.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

last time I was there, some frat boys were faux sincerely "digging" what the karaoke keyboard guy was doing, I wanted to deck 'em.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

:-(

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

it reminded me of those smarmy fucks in high school who would be all "buddy-buddy" with the old lunch ladies and janitors, high-fiving them in that condescending way, you know what I mean? don't know if that makes sense.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

perfect sense.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Here (and when u go there, u make the requisite joke about being "here"!) in Weho isnt really a place to dance, it's just a crowded lounge, but if you can stand diva-pop / hip-hop Icky's on Tuesday is okay. There's nothing wrong with Rage, and the danceoff there are always fun; it's usually a black/latino and very mixed-straight crowd. Tigerheat on thursday may be dangerous if Lolita Corpus is adamant on looking for "over-25" crowd though (goofd luck finding someone over 21!), but it's at Arena near Circus which is a gigantic/real cool venue. Motherlode used to have a cool karaoke night on Thursdays, but not sure if it's still goig on...

I haven't been to all of thse, but based on what I heard: Dirty is supposed to good at the Room on Tue, and there's always the Avalon stuff (Avaland, Ken - which is very gay on Sundays) in Hollywood. Free Thinking is on Fridays at Boardner's I think - and it's free! And there's cool disco at Goldfinger's on fridays, and rawk on Saturdays - on and don't forget Deep at 1650 on Sundays for deep house. For industrial/goth there are two new clubs at Blue: Dungeon on Sat and Vamp, the latter being $5 on fridays. As far as techno goes, I have a friend who works at Red which is now somewhere on Larchmont, but I've been putting off goign as it's around $20 and she's not sure if she can get me in - but it's supposed to be fantastic, and you should definitely go if you're attracted to OC AZNs...

And then there's always the Ruby (Bang! / Beat It ) - which is full of those adorable children every thurs-sunday night.

I'm DJing at Akbar on Fountain and Sunset on the Saturday of Sunset Junction, Aug. 21st. It's the Donnas/Ashford & Simpson night. I have the early shift, 7-10:30, so I'll probably be playing more rock-ish dance stuff since I dont' really get the chance on a usual weekend night. Everyone come down! There'll probably be plenty of people over 25 on this particular night. And it's usually free.

People used to dance a lot more when I started DJing there 2 years ago. Now the usual crowd's younger, a bit more Weho and uptight. Or maybe I've just gotten worse.

Arthur, that's brilliant! We were planning a FAP on that day, at Sunset Junction, so clearly this must be part of it! I shall send an e-mail shortly with more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, alright! I'm hoping it's free--they might try and charge a cover to keep away the Junction throngs. But I think I could arrange a secret password type thing with the doorman.

Gear I know exactly what you are talking about. Hurts.

(I hang out with these people via my roommate sometimes OUCH OUCH OUCH)

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 13 August 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to go dancing in LA.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Friday, 13 August 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I want you to go dancing in LA! When are you coming, anyway?

So, I think my set will go heavy on the SONGS THAT HAVE ACTIONS THAT YOU CAN DO.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 13 August 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

oh oh oh that means 'STOP' BY THE SPICE GIRLS! i arrive on the 18th of october. last night i realised the unfortunate fact that i will be in the states during the elections, boy i timed things badly.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 14 August 2004 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey baby won't you take a chance?
Say that you'll let me have this dance

Well let's dance, well let's dance
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too,
Any old dance that you wanna do
But let's dance, well let's dance

Hey baby, yeah, you thrill me so
Hold me tight, don't you let me go

But let's dance, well let's dance
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too
Any old dance that you wanna do
But let's dance, well let's dance

SPOKEN: OK, wail now. Oh, yeah

Hey, baby, if you're all alone
Maybe you'll let me walk you home

But let's dance, well let's dance
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too,
Any old dance that you wanna do
But let's dance, well let's dance

Hey, baby, things are swingin' right
Yes, I know that this is the night

Well let's dance, well let's dance
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too
Any old dance that you wanna do
But let's dance, well let's dance

FADE
But let's dance
But let's dance
But let's dance
