Well, I wasn't paying attention.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Hrm.
Snow ball and fuck buddy, well, it could be argued that you could make those compound nouns by joining the words together ("adj that is a noun" + "noun"), hence compound. Nouns *can* be used as adjectives to "define or describe another noun": house fly, porch light, snow ball. The first noun becomes, through the magic of grammar, an adjective b/c it's "describing a noun" (which is the definition of an adjective.) The adjective/noun then joins the noun in some grammatical unholy evolution and become the compound noun: housefly, porchlight, snowball. Fuck buddy is slang, really - I think that's what makes it confusing. I'd say it's short for the gerund "fucking" simply b/c fucking buddy just makes things even more confusing. The fucking fuck is fucking fucked. But I love it.

ron (ron), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

nice one.
stone - a skipping stone, to stone someone to death, stone cold (steve austin)
This has now made me wonder (afresh) about the noun/adj thing - just because a word goes in front of the noun does not make it the adj. See French. So, in "stone cold", cold could be called the adjective and stone the noun. Same with snow ball and fuck buddy (ball of snow, buddy of fuck(ing)). Stopping now.
