the people i work for have a scottie that runs around the office.

i hate it.

he craves constant attention.

right now he is whimpering at the boardroom door because his "mommy" is having a meeting in there.
he jumps on everyone that comes in and barks while running around like crazy when they leave.

he bites my pant legs every time i try to get into the washroom or walk through any doorway.

he rubs his ass on the floor then sniffs the area - which i find dysturbing.

he occasionally naps right behind my chair and after getting rolled over several times you'd think he'd figure out not to do this.

i hate this dog.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

so my question: have you ever work at an office with a pet of some variety¿ what did you think of it¿
and how do i poison this son of a bitch and make it look like natural causes¿

dyson (dyson), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What the hell kind of office do you work in where dogs are allowed to run amok like this?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

my office would never allow pets - that's the good thing about working for a huge corporation, they have rules that make it easy to be antisocial.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey! I love pets in the office!

The two jobs that I've had the longest, both of them were places where the boss used to bring his/her dog to work.

Obviously, this would suck if you weren't a dog lover, or if you had a particularly badly trained dog... but for me, it was utter classic. Whenever I felt particularly stressed, the dog would come over and jump up on my lap, and I'd instantly feel so much better.

All jobs should have ACCESS TO PUPPIES!!! it should be in the job description.

This describes people I have worked with. I've never worked in an office with pets though.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, we had a cat at the used bookstore I used to manage (which was pretty much allergy central anyway) but I've never worked at a corp job where pets were brought to work like this.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love that!!

Sounds like they need some Preparation H, at the least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The first place was a small consultancy firm, and there was a dog (a dachsund) belonged to the owner's step-daughter which we would dogsit occasionally. We loved having a dog around so much that when he split with his wife, and the step-daughter asked for her dog back, Rodney went out and got a dachshund of own. She was sooooo cute. She was a toy dachshund, and she could fit inside the pocket of his parka, so he used to take her out to lunch and stuff.

The second dog was a rather spoiled King Charles Spaniel, appropriately called "Diva", who also belonged to the owner of the ad agency. I really got along with the dog, though many people found her yappy and aggressive. I could say the same thing about her owner, too. ;-)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh - but i am a dog lover. where i worked before people would occasioanlly bring their dogs in and i loved it - their puppies were very well behaved. but this bastard is really testing my pro-dog stance.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone should work in porn?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

At my old workplace the only thing that made my job nearly bearable was the presence of two Westies belonging to the MD. Being on dog walk duty meant you could leave the office for a bit as well hurrah. They were spoilt rotten. Unfortunately the woman doing most of the spoiling, the 'official' dog minder, thought it meant she was special and in fact exempt from doing any real work, which made it a joy to be her supervisor.

Funny really, the dogs had far more rights and privileges than the employees, who were underpaid, weren't allowed to talk, and had to ask when going to the toilet.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Dogs are often only as badly behaved as their owners. I know that's a bit Barbara Woodhouse, but honestly, I've very seldom met a bad dog. Only bad owners.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

my Dad worked in an office where this guy used to bring his border collie into work and the dog became so popular that someone else in the office bought a border collie too, and the two dogs posed with the staff for their departmental photo. Unfortunately, one of the dogs bit a sales rep and so they were banished from the workplace.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

sales reps were banned¿ that's awsome - i'm gonna bite one¡

dyson (dyson), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow it seems dogs in the office are a lot more common that I realised. Any other animals? (Apart from cats in bookshops which are pretty mandatory I'd have thought.) I seem to remember someone bringing in a hamster in a ball once, but it wasn't like a regular fixture.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hamster in a ball¿ this gives me an idea for the mutt¡

dyson (dyson), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a child in our office today, does it count?

(it is wandering round the office making up offensive nicknames for my colleagues and whistling a chinking pennies extremely loudly. I know I shouldn't criticise people for craving attention, but really. I'm trying to pretend to work here, dammit)

That scratching-butt-on-carpet business sounds like either worms or anal gland trouble, I'm sure you'll enjoy knowing.

I'd love to be able to take my dog to work, but to be honest he's probably too exuberant to be a good office dog!

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a scottie dog, I'd never take him to work though. He'd be as bored as me.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Children in the workplace are much much worse than pets in the workplace.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

amen.

scotties are beyond adorable, but they've got strong personalities and might not be the best for office life.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

my old firm in the silicon valley was pretty permissive when it came to letting people bring in their pets every now and again. its fine if the dog behaves, not fine if the fucking dog tries to attack other dogs, or is a 5lb. chihuaha what wears a sweater.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Nathalie, she's an old lady of a Basset, correct?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 9 August 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I've known people who kept tanks of fish in the office, but that's nothing like having a dog or cat wandering around the place. The only workplace dog that ever annoyed me was a standard poodle that kept trying to sniff at my crotch. Fortunately, I haven't been asked to go back to that office.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 9 August 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

One guy here used to bring in his terrier puppy. It was v young and given to peeing on the floor, getting stuck under things then wimpering, and such like. I thought it was over-rated but lots of people loved it. He has stopped bringing it in now, but it sucks to use one of the cars after him cos it will stink of dog.

I quite like having dogs around when working outside.

isadora (isadora), Monday, 9 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

beats all those speakerphone cunts

sexyDancer, Monday, 9 August 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM. they must die.

at my friend's work there used to be a guy who had his dog with him every day (he was disabled in some way, I think). My friend had quit smoking so on his breaks he would play with the dog. It was one of the highlights of his day and provided relief from the tedium of work. I think this c/d comes down to whether one likes dogs/cats in the first place, and the particular pet.

oops (Oops), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

What is it about bookstore cats? Theres a secondhand (Black Books style mess) bookstore near my home that has these two enormo old cats that just lie in the front display window all day every day. Half the time they look stuffed, so rarely do they move. Now thats a life.

The old stylee art nouveau cinema also near me used to have a resident cat (not sure if it still does?). It was always hilarious when, in the middle of a tense, supenseful horror scene in a film, the cat would inevitably brush past someones legs and they'd scream their head off.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 9 August 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

In addition to bookstores, I see a lot of cats residing in (non-chain of course) record stores.

oops (Oops), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

*Remembers Elvis, the resident cat at the old Go! Records in Arlington, VA*

Perhaps because a well-behaved cat is very low maintenance compared to a dog? Perhaps because mice could be an issue? Perhaps the sort of people who like the idea of working in stores also tend to prefer cats over dogs?

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, yeah? I frequent a tavern with cats in it. Many times, you'll go to take a seat at the bar only to find a cat sitting in it.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 9 August 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've taken my yellow lab to work on occasion and he just lies around. Same as at home. Usually, I am the only one working there, but there are daily visitors. Some folks who come in will get all gushy over him and others don't even notice that he's there.

If he were in any way a distraction, or under foot, he'd be staying home, snoozing on the bed.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Awww.

jim wentworth (wench), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I would only take my cat to work to put her into service as a shredder. She shreds/eats paper like its some kind of drug. Crazy kitteh.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

My mum's assistance dog has always gone to work with her, but it can actually be quite a problem when other people want to play with a dog who's supposed to be working.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

When I worked in LA, the office was in my boss' house. She had a Yorkie that was dying of throat cancer. Instead of keeping the dog downstairs in the living quarters, she let it roam around upstairs where it noisily coughed up blood all day long, mostly while we were on the phone trying to work.

She also had a dog that would piss on my male colleague's bin every night after we'd gone home. It was really bizarre.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Your dog looks pretty happy where he is Andrew, and who can blame?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

At the last place I worked, the ancient, senile CEO used to bring his little dog in with him to keep him company while he napped at his desk. It was a cute and well-behaved dog, but I don't think anyone ever cleaned it. It would run around and want to be petted, but no one wanted to touch it because it was really dirty. It was kind of sad.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

My mother brings her dog to work every day because he grew accustomed to this as a puppy, when we didn't want to leave the ball of anarchy at home with a 17 year old lady poodle to kick around. This dog is an even smaller black poodle who does tricks and loves the attention from all the people who stop by her shop just to see him.

Don't think I've ever posted a picture of Dougal, I feel like I need his permission or something.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I also see a lot of dogs in neighborhood liquor stores. Junk yards, as well.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

he rubs his ass on the floor?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

that IS dysturbing.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Spill it DV, where's this shop?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps it is the little shop in his head where he likes to go during work hours to get away from it all. They sell pretty clouds and fat-free fireworks there.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

You have a home office which doesn't count in any of this.

I guess. But I do remember feeling awkward when she was a baby. She didn't cry that much, but she did at times of course and then I felt guilty because the two employees had to bear it. I did tell them and said I would make it as easy as possible for everyone involved.

KV, thanks! I think she is the prettier version of me. :-)

nathalie, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ages ago when I used to work at a youth counselling center my boss always brought his giant St. Bernard to work with him - he was a really sweet dog and excellent with kids so I suppose he was working as much as any of the rest of us there. He also didn't mind being used as a foot-rest, so he was pretty much the best dog ever.

Matt D, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

But Nathalie, having a home office, you don't really have anywhere else to put Ophelia! You can't put the baby in the yard on a leash during working hours.

Man I love huge friendly dogs.

Maria, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

When you have a positive encounter with a child or a pet in the workplace it can put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. I like that.

Mark C, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

My wife just started at some celebrity agency place on Oxford St last week and they sometimes have a load of dogs in the office but they are nice and she's a big animal lover anyway (mainly cats, but dogs will do in the absence of cats).

I second any loathing of people bringing kids into the office though. Especially if they expect everyone to make a big fuss about it. Doesn't happen here but used to at my last job.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

I'm allergic to dogs & cats so I'm against having them in the workplace. I used to visit a lot of army bases in a former job and wherever I went there was always at least one officer who kept a dog in his office. To be fair most of them would offer to remove it if they knew about my allergy but that wouldn't really make any difference.

I've taken my newborn babies into the office, but only because I was asked to do so. I realise it's a pain in the arse for most people to pretend to be interested.

onimo, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

my only bad experience with pets in the office was at a small pr company. the owner brought his 150lb tosa inu (hybrid mastiff fighting dog) to work basically every day. at first it didn't bother me because i love mastiffs and this one seemed friendly, but then another woman in the office told me under no circumstances to approach the owner when the dog was near him because it was "protective." later that day i learned that when anyone came through the front door, it would go ballistic and have to be restrained by several people. doesn't that seem like a lawsuit waiting to happen?

lauren, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

But Nathalie, having a home office, you don't really have anywhere else to put Ophelia! You can't put the baby in the yard on a leash during working hours.

I guess but what about the child care center or crèche? That said, I don't think I would have been able as all the places were full anyway. Even now, with the second one, I'll have to wait SIX MONTHS until the baby can go to the local crèche.

nathalie, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

Lauren, I don't understand why someone would take a dangerous dog to an office. Unless it's a diamond office (which our dealers did for a while, after having had a stick-up or whatever you call it).

nathalie, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

I love going into shops and seeing a cat or something.

If I owned my own shop I would definitely bring my pets/children. It would be my own damn shop! (The local yarn store has a couple of dogs in the bag. They generally just sleep)

Also Nath, I did not see your dog in that photo. Just Ophelia. I am confused.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

I like shops that have cats, but now I always ask the owner if the cat is pettable before approaching it, after getting bit in a bookstore in the French Quarter.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Cat might have been having a bad day. Our cat bites everyone so I'm always sure to warn people.

Rock, are you in NO? I don't have my jaymc.xls handy.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

I would like a office fridge for wine & Beer (a la Gr8080), humidor for smokes (at this point cancer will have been cured so I can smoke again) and a bbq out the back. Pets will include: beer opening monkey butler (preferably a white-faced saki), swearing parrot and happy dog. I will allow cats and things to keep things sweet with everyone. This will all be on my profit-turning organic vineyard (pref. pinot noir but hey, I'll take anything compared to a desk right now) with a view of the Dura. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

If you've got the money. . .

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

animals > children

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

Sometimes. Depends on if you need shoes made or not...

I don't :( (xpost)

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Ms M, I'm in northeast MS, near Tupelo. That bookstore cat is long dead now -- it was old at the time, and the time was 21 years ago. So ha ha, I totally outlived that fucker.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Poor kitty. :(

We're going to NOLA in a couple of months and I want to do non-touristy things. Will have to poll Big Easy ILX0rs soon.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

Quality crosspost there kv_lol :)

onimo, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, it's your shop. Family business=family being all up in the business. What your employees need to do is learn to work it. "Hey Nath, Ophelia ate my spreadsheet. I'm going to have to do it again. Er, at home. For five, no, six days. Yes."

Kev-lol, I have just finished my course in So You Want to be a PA for a Strange Dr. Moreau Figure Who Has His Own Organic Vineyard and Monkey Butler?

Coincidence? Hmm? Is it?

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno accentmonkey. How are you at swearing and wearing multicoloured feathers?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Screw it, you're over-qualified but I'll give you a chance. The pay is in wine and bbq. I cannot promise a pension or medical but if we work fast enough on finishing off the wine we won't need to worry about either in the long term!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Hooray! This is quite the Lord Flasheart moment.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

dude, no! Rock's a really good cook. You should hire him.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

But no fish, Hardy!

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

How comfortable are you working with Monkey waiting staff Rock? Accentmonkey OTM re. disgusting fish. Thankfully Dura are inland!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

I pride myself on being able to work with almost all vertebrates. I require Thursdays off, and also Tuesday nights from 1-3:30 a.m., and I'll need high-speed internet access, and a skirt steak allowance.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Done, Done and done. What you make your clothing out of is your own business but your uniform will come out of your wages though, sorry.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Damn, skirt steak is dry-clean-only.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

*Sigh* fine. I'll cover uniform. Not a good start young Hardy, not a good start at all...

kv_nol, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Wait'll you taste the chili verde.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, if I thought I could get them to Amsterdam without them blowing up all over the inside of my carryon, I'd bring a half-gallon of roasted chilies and make a big batch of green for the scooby gang.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

How the hell did this thread get so derailed?

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

dude, just get 1 vacuum sealer and take the roasted chilies AND THE DURIAN JAM!

Jaq, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

That jam is terrifying. I use it in place of smelling salts when I'm sleepy at work. One whiff and my head goes all the way back...

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, well, there'll be no use for that kind of thing below stairs at Casa Kev-lol. You can leave it behind at your current employment.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

I would like a office fridge for wine & Beer (a la Gr8080), humidor for smokes (at this point cancer will have been cured so I can smoke again) and a bbq out the back.

holy crap, my job has these things (bbq is in front, at the covered picnic table on the patio) plus a couple of visiting dogs, but all well-behaved and non-intrusive.

A swearing parrot I have at home (well, angry muttering at least). monkey butler is seriously missing, though. Wait, interns!

patita, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

Interviewed at a small office today with company founder and secretary. Office had cat sleepspace on table w/ toys.

kingfish, Thursday, 6 September 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

Run away kingfish!

I would love to try this much discussed Chili verde but the sniffing, my PA is correct, that sort of thing won't be tolerated at casa/chateau kv-lol.

Patita, I want to work there. Can I visit and bring my entourage?

kv_nol, Thursday, 6 September 2007 08:09 (eighteen years ago)

My mom's dog still 'works' at her office. Additionally he barks like mad whenever someone wearing a baseball cap enters the shop.

suzy, Thursday, 6 September 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

Lucy hates all men, so if their odor' is strong enough she'll go berserk. She would never ever bite, nor could as she's behind the counter. Esp men in uniform piss her off. Very VERY funny.
