What a boring way to sign off letters and e-mails. I have it as my default signature when writing to clients, many of whom do not speak English as a first language and so reply with much more colourful and interesting signatures.

So let's start a list of more original ways to sign off.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Best regards sounds weird. I'd use 'best wishes'.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck y'all

Fergal (Ferg), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Be Seeing You".

ROCK ON, B1TCH!

Barima ILX, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Kind regards" was used a lot at my job last year.

BarimaBurma, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

'peace out'

suzy otm -- i've never seen 'best regards'

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ttfn xox

(actually I've given up on that now - too twee even for me)

"best wishes" is good.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I use 'Regards' or 'Best wishes' on emails. 'Yours sincerely' on letters.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

At the 2 American telecoms companies I worked for, everyone used Best Regards. I think it's awful. I use Best Wishes, but find it a bit weird if I haven't met the person or spoken to them over the phone. I use Regards if I'm pissed off with somebody.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha yeah I think I do too, which implies I am pissed off with most of the work people I email. Yep, sounds right.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm smiling at you"
(see Martin Lukes, Financial Times)

I just say "Yours" and every now and then wonder if this sounds right

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ttfn xox (actually I've given up on that now - too twee even for me)

About fucking time.

Huey (Huey), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i once corresponded w/a guy (for work) from russia whose emails ended with "happy to be of service," even if he was asking me a question.

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually use 'cheers'.

Wooden (Wooden), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

shock'n y'all

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

'Yours sincerely' in all first cases of communication. 'Very sincerely yours' if you are REALLY after something that isn't a new job.

Fond regards or best wishes, never other combinations. 'All the best' if you or your addressee is Irish. Best wishes is acceptable after a publisher has taken you to posh lunch, for example.

'Cheers' acceptable in a memo asking for stuff to get done that's late.

'Yours' is for that snotty woman at the bank, as is 'regards'.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually use cheers, however just now I used keep the faith

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just been reminded of somebody who's coming to my conference next year who signs off with More Power! He is from Hiroshima University.

I also get emails from a Reverend in Ghana who begins his messages Praise Lord and ends them Be Blessed. He is also wanting to come to my conference, but is asking me to do some funny stuff with his delegate fee which looks suspiciously like money laundering.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck saying goodbye.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

One of my Russian 'contacts' used to sign off each email with 'I hope you have a wonderful day there in England Mr Rachel' (may be paraphrasing a tiny bit). But BLESS.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Quack,"

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "All my best," but I only use that with people I like.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone tried to convince me once that you have to use "Yours faithfully" if the letter is to someone unnamed (Dear Sir).

I have been known to sign e-mails "yours in rock"

Maria D. (Maria D.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually sign off with "while you were reading this, I ate the last cookie in your jar,"

Huck, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone tried to convince me once that you have to use "Yours faithfully" if the letter is to someone unnamed (Dear Sir)

They were right!

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

But why?? Sincerity is extended towards those you know, but 'mere' faith to those you don't?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Totally,"

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"I use 'Regards' or 'Best wishes' on emails. 'Yours sincerely' on letters." I could have written this.

I say Take Care, sometimes, to my family. Or Luv Lots, which I caught off a friend.

A colleague caught "Stay warm" from his Norwegian father. I guess it makes more sense inside the artic circle.

I very much like: I am, Sir, your most humble and obedient..." and "Yours etc." but I fear that this would make me seem crazy.

isadora (isadora), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stay out of trouble"

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Love Kim

(that's not a punctuation error - it's a command)

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Pagan hippy chicks signing off with "blessed be" should be rounded up and shot.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed's camping friends are all about 'blue skies!'. Which is what you'd wish for when hippy and at a camp, so...

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

'fond regards' is second best, after '21st century emailing moron.'

youn, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I use "With kind regards" on semi-formal emails.

For those sent to friends, I either don't sign off with anything at all or I use something soppy such as "With much love, as always" depending on the context.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Regards can't be best can they? Wishes can, but aren't regards kind? I don't know if this is true, but best regards always seemed wrong.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

peace, love & coffee

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ciao for niao

ouch!

"Ich freue mich auf eine baldige Antwort."

Actually, I like "bis dann", cos it sounds like several languages at once.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, I just realised that in emails to department colleagues/lists etc I always sign off with 'thanks' even if I'm not asking anything/they're not doing anything for me. Maybe this mode is just typical English humility - thank you for even reading my pitiful words.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I generally use 'regards' at work because I'm trying to maintain a chilly professional demeanour. Hah.

/Kroboppel

'Lots of love' is my friends/family thang.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering when someone would voice their pain at this one.

"l8er g8er" is another cringeworthy one

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I usually end correspondence with a subtle head nod and a fist pound.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

erg. I often sign off "Talk to you soon" or something like that, assuming that "talk" is understood as "email". I think I assume too much. Whenever I see "Yours," I think, Mine?! Wow, power. And then begin to scheme.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 12 August 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)
