Look into the past, with the Corneal Imaging System

Columbia University researchers have found a way of analysing the light reflected on a cornea to build up a picture of the environment it is reflecting. In theory, one could take an old photograph, if it was high enough resolution, and reveal what was there in the room or whatever in front of them. Exciting!

I like the idea of this kind of technology. I used to wonder whether it would ever be possible to analyse current ambient sounds and, working backwards from echoes or something, to hear conversations that had taken place in the past. OK, it's a long shot.

This reminds me of an episode of Homicide, where the detectives convince a murder suspect that they have a camera that takes a picture of the victim's cornea and blows it up to show the last thing the person saw before they died.

because criminals are a cowardly, stupid lot.

Cops in the 18th century told suspects that they'd been caught on CCTV but their bluff was usually called.

"I used to wonder whether it would ever be possible to analyse current ambient sounds and, working backwards from echoes or something, to hear conversations that had taken place in the past."

I've often thought about this - extrapolating from the present circumstances to reveal the past. I think the uncertainty principle rules this out to a large extent, unfortunately.

Isn't this the basic premise of astronomy?

What, like the way the interference on your TV screen is an echo of the Big Bang? (coolest fact ever, that)
