Well it's a day late but I don't think there's been a thread about him.

Although he could be - from the little I've seen - arrogrant, sneering, pompous on tv, I became a fan (in a small way) of his
by reading his essay collections, mostly Times column reprints I believe. His musings on politics, philosophy, religion and particularly music (Schubert, Wagner, Mozart were his touchstones)
were always more than enjoyable, and often truly inspiring. Unfortunately my second-hand copies were long ago disposed of, (not by me), so I can't recall specific ones. But anything on music I lapped up. This was a few years ago, when my taste was forming.

Anyone else ever been affected by his work?

I liked this story in his Guardian obituary. He couldn't drive, but thought that other drivers were laughing at him when they saw him being driven by a woman, so he stopped at a shop to buy a sling to put on his arm so it would look less embarassing.
