the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't like clubs suggesting what should be worn this heavily tho. just stating it has an Olympic theme would suffice. We should wear that shit to clubs generally anyway.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i amn so there. if i new what day it was

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i doubt it, actually :(

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean i would like to but i just get the feeling that it's not going to happen and we are somehow powerless to prevent this. how odd.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

DC is great! My brother's group is going to be opening for BRAND NUBIAN next week!

Um, this has nothing to do with the rest of the thread, sorry.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(from the thread titles as movies thread)

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

There's Matt Dear at fabric that night? (Saturday I think). It'll be well expensive though. I can never remember if I like Fabric, possibly just 'cos they IDed me twice in one night when I was seventeen.

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

why don't I know who Matt Dear is?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

bowling on saturday of course it being an olympic sport and all!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(ok it isn't but still!)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to google him too! I was trying to show off :(

"Matthew Dear's most recent excursions have found him at the doorsteps of the minimal-but-funky regime of techno music. Inspired by pioneers like, Mike Inc., Thomas Brinkmann, and Ricardo Villalobos, Dear has ingested, manipulated and re-introduced his version of this always changing and innovative realm of sound creation. Recent acceptance into the legendary Plus 8 roster and ever-popular Berlin based, Perlon label has solidified Dear as a viable source for pushing the boundaries of modern dance music while at the same time remaining focused on the simple goal of making people dance."

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, but bangface on friday will be more fun.

headbands.

david acid (gareth), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to this last night. It was fucking wonderful.

RickyT (RickyT), Saturday, 14 January 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Some of us were gonna drive up and, on being told that there were 200 people queuing for 100 tickets, were extremely glad we didn't

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 15 January 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

rickyt! why didnt you say? i was in...

dust:(

terry lennox. (gareth), Sunday, 15 January 2006 12:44 (twenty years ago)

I was lucky in that one of my friends had the foresight to book advance tickets. The queue didn't look that bad at 11pm when we turned up, but there were still people queueing when I left at three-ish.

Sorry G., I should've said. Next time?

RickyT (RickyT), Sunday, 15 January 2006 13:45 (twenty years ago)

lemme know next time this is on too.

^... im totally gonna wear this to the annual nummer/platzhirsch karneval rave!

Yawn (Wintermute), Sunday, 15 January 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

So is this really as good as all the hype? Been thinking of going for a while to see what the fuss is about, but I never get organised.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

its pretty fun, but i dont want to like it. i dont think its as "mental" as they wish it was, but the music was ok the time i went. i guess we stayed for ages so thats a good sign.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 16 January 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

hmmm... those wheels instead of hooves nights that were organised by mike paradinas used to be good fun, but if they were anything like this then i agree with ambrose. too many geeky bald guys breaking their glasses and shouting "AARON! AARON!" in the mosh to Venetian Snares, not enough monged up dancing.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

This is the lineup for next month. I think I'm going to go.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 16 January 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

"i dont want to like it"

Haha! That's what I keep thinking.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 16 January 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

The HDIF for old ravers is true to a certain extent, and I can totally see the not wanting to like it. But honestly, it was just so much FUN. The crowd were so, so up for it. It was a happy up for it, too, none of the intense heads down attitude you sometimes get. Everyone was smiley. I was completely straight all night, but I couldn't stop grinning.

The WIH comparison is sorta offbase, in that the whole point of Bangface seems to be the dancing-like-a-loon. Very little baldy chinstroking was going on.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 16 January 2006 22:26 (twenty years ago)

yeh its fun.l i guess i just resolutely the feel of it - the name, the "mental"ness, people holding up signs etc.

i wish they would just go the whole hog and do a stright up old skool night. drop the nods to current electronica scene (eg mr76) or that sort of weird boring mid tempo acid breakbeat thing that luke vibert flogs around town. just play straight up acid techno, acid house and hardcore.
granted i only went once, and i did have fun. but based on that, and lineups, theres just something about it that niggles.

why do old skool nigths always have to be in arenas of 4000 people with 40 djs, 10 mcs, and funky house in the back room? not that thats a bad place to go for it, but i would like to go to hear this stuff for less than 20/30/40 quid.

i think im gettign a bit confused music wise here tho

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 16 January 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

i was really hoping this thread would be about something else...

ryan (ryan), Monday, 16 January 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

ambrose otm 1000X

and all i hear in london squat parties is fucking psy-trance.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 00:54 (twenty years ago)

psy-trance.

Aaargh!

Ambrose, we seem to get Old Skool nights in Brighton in small venues. The Volks, which holds 200, has Slipmatt down this weekend, and DJ Phantasy often plays at the even smaller Pressure Point quite regular.

What are the nights like?

Er. Sorry, don't know! I keep meaning to go to one, but just haven't got around to it. Maybe I'll make it down this weekend. Problem is, a lot of my clubbing friends are too young to remember it!!!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 12:50 (twenty years ago)

we're thinking of maybe having an old skool night where i live in hitchin but also mixing it in with a bit of new stuff.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

radical!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:40 (twenty years ago)

yeh yeh, don't take the piss.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:42 (twenty years ago)

thats what im saying though, i would love a night that didnt mix it in with new stuff. thats my beef with bang face.

mind you, what on earth IS old skool? i dont know for starters

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

are we talking old skool rave? like SL2 and 808 State and stuff?

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

i keep meaning to go to bangface but haven't been yet.

i'm not going to electrowerkz though, it's a disgusting hovel.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

The warehouseyness of the venue is part of the charm.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 14:01 (twenty years ago)

you snobby man! i like it - it's the grease and grot that makes it appealing.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 14:01 (twenty years ago)

there is nothing charming about electrowerkz! i was there just before xmas and when i left felt like i had to scrub myself very hard to get rid of all the dirt.

you know they host goth fetish nights too? i can't imagine anything more grim.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

it smells like the reptile room at the zoo (and is lit to approximately the same level). i dunno, i find that kind of soothing in a way.

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 14:28 (twenty years ago)

it feels like grunge never happened to some of you! the whole point of going out and dancing around is to come home with some new kind of smell about your person. And really it's not that dirty - just the decor is reminiscent of Lazerquest..

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

i thought the point of going out and dancing is to come home with some kind of new person about your person.

although i hope its not, as i have never ever succeeded, nor have any idea of how to do so

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 23:32 (twenty years ago)

I think I feel the same way about this Bang Face idea... like the grafting on of late IDM acts is somehow an attempt to say "yes, banging acid is still the cutting edge & MENTAL & the true spirit of rave" when I'd actually much rather hear exciting NEW (minimal/micro/electro blah blah) techno/house (most of it not "Made In England" sadly), with the occasional old school/IDM tune thrown in too.

...I want a night so grubby I have to throw my clothes away the next day =)

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't actually mind the (IDM) acts themselves I just hate... England, probably.

fandango (fandango), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 23:59 (twenty years ago)

grunge DEFINITELY never happened to me. yuck!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 07:41 (twenty years ago)

Dance music needs to stay sweaty.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 07:48 (twenty years ago)

sweaty is fine! electrowerkz is far grimmer than that.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 07:50 (twenty years ago)

I have actually heard it described as quite a shithole elsewhere, so I'm not being entirely serious here...

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 08:12 (twenty years ago)

I have been dancing in much grubbier places.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Having said that: GRUNGE? What does grunge have to do with anything? Mr Latin, are you feeling all right?

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 09:27 (twenty years ago)

just saying that, yes, electrowerkz is grubby, but that's half the point.

Wogan Lenin (dog latin), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 09:53 (twenty years ago)

yeh i like the electrowerkz

having said that, i cant recall ever using the toilets there. but i would take that over fabric i think

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

the toilets are just about passable.

CharlieNo4, Friday, 5 October 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

OK, I finally went to this :-/

Firstly we had bought tickets online, but were then told to get in the cash queue ?! So we had to queue up for over an hour to get in. Sounds like they oversold it...

Finally got in though, I enjoyed the old-school sets by 2 bad mice and Deep Blue, but the rest of the night seemed to consist of undanceable breakcore and 300bpm gabba played by people unable to string a set together. Interesting for a bit, but nothing I could get my teeth into. Can't see why it was so popular myself, but maybe I'm just too old to get it.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 November 2008 13:29 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, and some bloke called Ed Cox who makes 'clowncore' which consisted of him playing an accordian over stock drum'n'bass backing. It was a good novelty for the first 5 minutes of his set, but quickly overstayed its welcome. ^_^

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 November 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)
