My girlfriend asked me to buy her some underwear for her birthday...

Where should an easily embarrassed man shop for women's underwear in London? Or are there good online alternatives? What are the chic brands? I'm clueless, all I know is that the only underwear I've ever seen her in is either black or white.

Off to lunch, I'll check in in a couple of hours' time for all your good shopping tips.

S&M or M&S, that's the question...

Damn right.

victorias secret online.

― Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

you could try http://www.figleaves.com/uk/home.asp if you really are that shy. maybe http://www.agentprovocateur.com/homepage.php if you fancied something a little spicier. Or alternatively, most womens shops sell lingerie, so you could just go to any of their websites.

― PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you need to look at the underwear she already has - find out where she usually buys it, look at what it's made from - is it fancy, patterned, cotton, etc. Check out sizes - v. important. I think it would be perfectly acceptable to ask, if you haven't already.

Brands of underwear doesn't really matter, unless they matter to her. What's your budget? Obviously don't go for cheap or boring - M&S is probably a no-no, unless you go for the posh stuff. Again, look and see what she usually wears.

Go for sets, as it's the one thing women don't tend to buy for themselves. And make sure you get the right kind of pants - no point buying her the matching g-string if she won't go anywhere near it.

― Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Where you go depends on what style you're looking for, your budget, and what size she is. Pink's on the mark with figleaves - and so long as you don't buy it too far in advance, if it doesn't fit or she doesn't like it, it's extremely easy to send it back.

The best choice in the centre of town will be in any of the department stores, but they tend to be very cluttered and very busy most of the time. There's a good shop out in Ealing - Bravissimo, which is very good for larger cup-sized bras. They're on-line too, will come back with the address.

I've just got back from three days at a wedding and Emma is on the awkward part of the menstrual cycle! I want to se gurlz in pants! I want to be able to lick their smooth bums!

― Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so glad I use an assumed name these days.

― Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting pretty close, Vic, yeah. I was thinking maybe slightly more feminine (the edging reminds me of y-fronts).

STOP THE PICTURES NOW PLEASE GOD.

― Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Do gurlz like boyz in pantz even 10% as much as boyz like gurlz in pantz?

― Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for all the excellent tips. I will certainly get her size.

I'm wondering is there some sort of balance to be struck when a man buys underwear for a woman? Sexy certainly, but then again not too much of a present to himself? Or is this not a worry at all? What do women here think?

― logged off for the moment, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My top 5 favourite girls in pants moments:

Kirsten Dunst jumping on the bed in Bring It On
Cameron Diaz dancing in Charlie's Angels
Scarlett Johanssen in Lost In Translation
all French films
Sigourney Weaver in Alien (not that sexy as such but a great scene anyway)

― the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't even THINK about 'outrageously sexy' crap involving too-shiny satin. Also red&black+lace is bad.

Do gurlz like boyz in pantz even 10% as much as boyz like gurlz in pantz?

Well, boys out of pants make me giggle (sometimes for the right reason, sometimes, conversely, for the wrong) but boys in pants can be cute. I don't think it's quite as much of an issue as girls in pants seems to be for you girl-loving boys.

xpost Sigourney Weaver in fatigue boy-short pants and sweaty vest is HOTT AS HELL. Transparent knickers a la LIT are v obv but get the job done innit.

― Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

what's with all this talk of sexy summer dresses and underwear on ILX? you are all giving me the horn. more than usual, that is.

― Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm surprised you aren't swimming in a pool of naked, beautiful ladies after your controversial TB triumph. I was told this was the prize, hence my strop at losing so early.

La Senza had the same sizes as everywhere else, last time I looked. But their bigger bras were made of stretchy material and had overstretchy straps, which is no good.

― Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it's La Perla then, or maybe I have imagined the whole thing in some bra reverie.

Someone gave me a barely-there lacy thong type thing in an office Secret Santa thing two years ago. To this day I have never identified the culprit.

I thought you were going to say: "To this day I have never worn it".

― Alba (Alba), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

That wouldn't be true though.

agent provocateur rules for this. although they lose points for making you ring the door to be allowed in.

ddin't tom have a thread about this once?!

― toby (tsg20), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Tom's shopping trauma was simply one part of the thread of all threads:

Haha, I bought a set of those very M&S knicks & bra for Jill about 1 mnth ago. They look very nice on her, and she says they are v.v.comfortable and make her feel good.

― Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 13 August 2004 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone tried the bravissimo shirts - they appeaar to be a work of genius, but i want to know if their any good before i buy one.

― chouxfleur, Friday, 13 August 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a nice idea - I'd probably get one if they weren't open necked shirts.

― Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 13 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

― Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 13 August 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Well OK, but really I'm just intrigued by a shirt that's a work of genius.

― Alba (Alba), Friday, 13 August 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it is a shirt evocative of the Beatles and Dylan at their best.

― Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 14 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it on the cover of Mojo?

― Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

it seems like the thing that's different about them is the sizing, not the way they actually look. if you're that curious, you can have a look at the website. that's what i did.

― lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 14 August 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I have looked and it is clearly a work of genius.

― Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

so are you home on a saturday night, looking at women's lingerie on the internet?

― lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

So... it's a fitted shirt with ribbing then?

― Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I have been out and come home, but yes. Thanks for the idea.

― Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait - I thought I wasn't such a loser because it was after 1am (I know, this makes little sense) but the ILE datestamp is saying it's half an hour earlier. What time is it?

― Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

12.21am where you are, according to my clocks. i'm sure you went out and did lots of fun stuff tonight, but that was just such an easy shot that i couldn't resist.

― lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 14 August 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 1.21am. We're on BST (GMT+1). The ILE timestamp for your post is 12:58am. Never mind.

I didn't really have fun. I caught up with a friend, which was nice, but the band was bloody awful.

― Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Why aren't the models on the Bravissmo site as pretty as usual. Are they saying big-boobed women can't have nice faces? Actually I don't like the bras much either. All in all it's been a disappointing Saturday night.

― Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i was very disappointed in the bras, myself. really blah. i'm about to go out, so i'll take over the saturday night mantle and try to turn things around.

― lauren (laurenp), Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the idea of Saturday night transatlantic tag team. Have fun.
