C/D: The "Cuteness" Of Old People

Infantilism at its worst? Plus, today's twinkly-eyed foxy grandpa could have been yesterday's asshole. Plus, sometimes when I hold the door for a shuffling, smiling, dormouse of a granny I can't help but think: "I wonder if she used to beat her kids with a razor-strop? Who knows? She HAS to be cute now because she is so frail and helpless. Maybe it's a trick!" Or, are they really the most darling things in the world with their smelly tea-stained sweaters and balled-up wads of Kleenex spilling out of their purses? Or, is there something kind of comforting about the notion of sliding thru life wraith-like, a vacant, dementia-induced smile on your face and nobody's expectations heaped on your shoulders that makes us admire and revel in the antics of rest-home wobblers?

New rickety answers, please.

Old people don't need companionship. They need to be isolated and studied so it can be determined what nutrients they have that might be extracted for our personal use.

Michael B, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

they give me the creeps, i thinkl it's the papery skin, wrinkles and tendency for reactionary attitudes

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill Cosby on his dad being the generous grandfather to Bill's kids:

"I try and tell them, 'That's NOT the same person I grew up with! You're looking at an old person, who is trying to get into heaven now!'"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Not good when they've lost all interest in personal hygiene and insist on sitting next to you on the bus because you're a girl and hence non-threatening to their wrinkled dessicated minds. Eurgh old man dandruff and wee stained support stockings.

I often wonder whether senile dementia is on our side in some strange way. I know if I got to a certain age and didn't go slightly batty I'd probably get pretty depressed about being close to the big D. So yes, it's nice that we get to spend our Winter years in a state of blissed-out ignorance.

This reminds me to warn you all that the movie "Duplex" is the dumbest movie ever.

And wise-cracking and/or rapping old people should be banned from TV.

...as in Duplex Planet? They made a film?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

My grandma is 99. She is pretty cute! She fixes her hair a lot and likes chocolate. She used to scare me a little when I was young, but not anymore!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad hangs out with that Duplex Planet guy, they live next door to each other. It is kinda cute when my dad talks about what a nerd he is.

so you've never actually met anyone with senile dementia or Alzheimers then? As that is so far off the mark it's untrue

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Old people are so not cute. They're like babies but bigger and faded and slightly more icky if that's possible.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, plenty of young ppl have reactionary attitudes too. Besides, you can't expect ppl to unlearn what they have taken as a given for a considerable period of their lives to fit in with what they consider to be (and in some cases, what actually is) a passing fashion of opinion.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm posting purely from personal experiance mark, and the arguements I've had with several members of my family, for instance:

my Uncle "what about apartheid and all that?"

my great Aunt who spent 6 months a year in Jo'burg "oh, the N****** are kept in their rightful place"

me ".........." as my jaw drops and I run out of the room for fear of saying something bad

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

old people are totally cute. they talk a load of shit and don't get it when you laugh at them! my favourite kind of people.

oh yes, sure, it's hell to have to listen to horrible reactionary talk like that from the elderly. I'm not for one moement trying to deny that. But I always fast forward to my elderly self and imagine myself expressing opinions that I hold now in forty or fifty years time which are pretty much what I believe now, only to be greeted with looks of disgust from the younger generation of 2044-54, whose views are likely to be just as different from what we think as our views are cf the OAPs of 2004.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I always have the issue of expressing sympathy if someone has died i.e. Grandpa, Grandma etc what if the person whose relation it was didn't like them? but to immediately ask 'did you like them?' seems the sort of question to bring on a flood of tears.
