Or: Cliched phrases used constantly for no good reason.

Like "Dynamic Duo": Completely meaningless, yet used anytime there's two of something. There are millions of these, kept alive by headline puns and informalised news reports, and they really bug me (probably cuz I'm paranoid I use them without knowing).

So what "spice" language particularly annoys you?

been there, done that.

ethan, Sunday, 11 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

At the end of the day, you gotta say our Graham's got his head screwed on.

Will, Monday, 12 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Going forward, let's try and make this a win-win situation.

I'm amazed at the sudden popularity of "going forward" as a phrase.

Is it just me or does Ethan's link lead to a previously unknown Finnish ILX?

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah weird. You know at first I kind laughed at how ILX looks but after spending time here other forums by contrast look foolishly flamboyant and less respectable.

Almost like a form of google-proofing. Random stumblers upon probably just think the place is sorta crappy.

"Autumnal"

stop saying it. just say it's cold and wet.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

but autumnal is kicking up leaves, cinder toffee, fireworks and cosiness.
cold and wet is just a default description of the outside, regardless of season

thomasintrouble, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:19 (thirteen years ago)

yeah but people always say "autumnal" as if they're ever so clever for saying this ever so clever fancy word that no one else knows, even though it's just "autumn" with "al and you pronounce the "n".

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago)

Don't be hatin' people for enjoying language.

Autumnal the faun (ledge), Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

xp ha yeah I see what you're getting at now - check out my arcane knowledge that weather is DIFFERENT AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE YEAR, and we have these things called SEASONS and, lastly some of those SEASONS even have adjective forms! yeah grr.

hold on, I think I half-pronounce the n in "autumn". Never noticed that before.

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

It's almost always used like this:

"Brrr, it's getting colder out"
"Hmmm, yes it is feeling rather 'autUMnal'"

It's just a boring word and people keep using it all the time as if they're the first to use this ever so big word....

That's all. I think I'm grumpy today.
