No fish.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

5 in total, before I began a vegetarian.
chicken, turkey, cow, pig, sheep.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

pork, beef, chicken, turkey, duck, venison, kangaroo, frog, rabbit, hare = 10.

can't think of any others offhand.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

chicken, turkey, cow, pig, sheep

...plus fish -- also, rabbit, elk, duck, what else, hmm...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

no fish? aren't they animals?

moo cows
piggies

duckies
gooses (well, foie gras)
sheeps
probably horsies too
chickuns
turkeys

loads of stuff - and mcdonalds just adds billions!

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I played this game with a friend's brother who's a bit of a survivalist. Picks up roadkill off the ground and cooks it, been all over the world, eaten dog, various insects, etc. He won, but since then I've been trying to up my place in the food chain.

Counting fish and shellfish as one each, um, cow, turkey, chicken, pig, sheep, deer, ostrich, goat, squid, octopus (do these count as fish?), rabbit, duck, alligator, hmmm, there must be more.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Fish make it too complicated. There's so many types.

I forgot pheasant. 11 then.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

chicken, turkey, cow, pig, sheep, duck, deer, moose, bison, fish, Argentinian

Huck, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Chicken, cow, turkey, pig, sheep, horse, duck, pigeon, snail, frog, deer, ostrich, goose, goat, rabbit.

I *think* that's it. I also predict Chris will be runaway winner of this one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

pig
beef
sheep
chicken
duck
goose
turkey
pheasant
pigeon
rabbit
ostrich
bison

deer

frog

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Argentinian?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a lot of meat on Diego Maradona these days.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I think more English people have eaten frogs and snails than French people. I know loads of French people and they have never eaten frogs legs.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

5 but I only eat 4, now.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I've eaten ants

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I've eaten worm brownies at the annual Entomology dept. "Bug Bowl"

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. No fish? I suppose sea-dwelling arthropods are out as well, then.

Alligator.
Some flying insects.
Cow.
Pig.
Deer.
Ostrich.
Bison.
Sheep.
Quail.
Chicken.
Turkey.
Duck.
Dog.
Frog.

But really all the most interesting ones are fish! I would like to try other kinds of amphibians or lizards. Am I missing anything by living in the states and not eating rabbits? How is kangaroo?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Boring and predictable answer, but rabbit tastes like chicken. But kind of richer and juicier.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

americans don't eat rabbit? you guys don't eat lamb a whole lot either do you? do sheep even exist in the states? i'm just having a hard time imagining an american say "sheep".

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

do we count different insects?

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Chicken, duck, cow, pig, sheep, goat, quail, kangaroo, deer, turkey = 10.

TOMBOT - Kangaroo is nice. Surprisingly beefy.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

We don't eat rabbit much. I don't eat lamb much either, no. In the states if you want to eat rabbits you have to hunt them yourself, basically.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Quail, chicken, turkey, goose, duck, pheasant, grouse, ostrich, deer, horse, goat, cow, sheep, frog, snail, pig, bison, rabbit, hare, pigeon, kangaroo.

Do these count?: lobster, crab, winkle, mussel, oyster, octopus, squid, clam, langoustine, whelk.

Also ant, midge and fly by accident. Never worm. Probably spider, if it's true you swallow 8 of them in your sleep during your lifetime.

Finally, catfood.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Cow
Pig
Chicken
Turkey
Sheep
Bison
Bear
Deer
Duck
Geese
Rabbit
Frog
Snail
The Worm

Rabbits: you're not missing anything
Lamb: around in the states, not so much because the beef is so good here, but it's in ethnic cooking (indian, middle-eastern, etc)

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to hear the cat food story.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really want to count different kinds of insects. I only ever did that to freak people out anyway. I think for "fish" and "insects" we could possibly make it simpler by sticking to phylum instead of common names:

Mollusks (clams, squid)
Annelids (worms)
Arthropods (crabs, ants)
Cartilaginous Fish (shark)
Regular Old Fish (tuna)

That's easier isn't it? Put me down for all, and lots of them plz.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

pig
cow
sheep
deer
chicken
turkey

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh right I forgot ostrich, crayfish, lobster, crab!

No-one else on the whale or seal then?

OleM (OleM), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Catfood story:

Madchen spies open can of Whiskas on the worktop. Thinks, 'hmm, I wonder what that tastes like'. Gets spoon from drawer and has a taste. Thinks, 'it's OK but nothing special'. Goes back to living room to watch telly.

(Boar! I forgot boar!)

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to try ostrich.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't kinow that stuff like Oysters and crayfish were supposed to be included on the list, in that case my list would have been a lot longer.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If you visited an ostrich farm you wouldn't want to try ostrich -- they eat their own feces!

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

so do lots of things. Including rabbits. Its called coprophagy.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Non-sea-dwelling: cow, bison, buffalo, deer, sheep, chicken, turkey, quail, pheasant, poussin/cornish game hen, squab/pigeon, ostrich, pig (wrong), duck (wrong), snail, frog. Don't remember in re rabbit (wrong).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

If you visited an ostrich farm you wouldn't want to try ostrich -- they eat their own feces!

And lord knows they are stupid, stupid animals. Even the squirrels were laughing at them. Typical ostrich behavior on a farm:

"What is this shiny long thing that is part of a fence which keeps me from wandering anywhere? It looks delicious. I'll peck at it."

*pecks at wire*

"Oh well, I can't eat it."

*two second pause*

"What is this shiny long thing..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

As for rabbit, TOMBOT, find a good tapas place that serves some as part of their menu. You'll taste the joy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd never heard of the gibnut before mcd mentioned it....anyway, they look like this:

http://www.belizezoo.org/grc/zoo/mammals/gib/gibmnsm.jpg

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly! In Belize. It's tasty.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

You can get rabbit in the States if you want it, I've seen it at the grocery store but especially at farmer's markets. My girlfriend is fond of it.

I'm probably most proud of developing a taste for boiled crawfish, since before that I wouldn't eat anything with recognizeable eyes or legs.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, I know that's probably the case but as long as I don't actually see it I don't care.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I love eating odd animals.

How gauche that sounds!

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody admitting to eating humans?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus, I forgot duck as well

I may have eaten lizard too, but those markets in Thailand you're never really sure - it may have been snake, the lady made a kind of international sign language sign for slithering.

rabbit is great, but there's not much meat on the english wild ones, French ones (probably bred in terrible conditions etc) are pretty meaty. Have you noticed that they smell a little bad, but taste really good and sweet?

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I ate iguana once.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

no you don't ;)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to eat a tiger or something, just to assert my place on the food chain.

According to this article it's possible to get lion, hippo or zebra meat. I wouldn't think alligator would be so exotic; aren't some areas of Florida and Louisiana overrun by the things? (I tried alligator last time I was in New Orleans. I'd rather have an alligator bag or shoes.)

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

you can get crocodile burgers at the Walkabout bars here.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

FLAMINGO! GET ME SOME FLAMINGO MINCE! FLAMINGO LASAGNE WOULD FUCKING ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Flamingo tastes like kookaburra.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

does flamingo go well with salsa?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It goes GREAT with flamenco!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

am i the only person who's had squirrel? i mentioned it on another thread, i think, but i had it by accident in alabama when i was a small child.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

is that anything like living off campus?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I've eaten squirrel on purpose. It were quite yummy actually.

Anyone else eaten rattlesnake? Rattlesnake that only hours prior to being eaten by you was rattling menacingly at a (luckily, properly armed) member of your hiking/camping entourage? Good eatin', thems.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was but a wee lad I used to think "philly roast beef sammiches" were made from horse meat.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

um..
cow
pig
sheep
chicken
goose
turkey
rabbit
duck

A pretty boring selection, I must admit.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I recommend you go outside and slaughter, cook, and eat whatever first vertebrate you find.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere J0hn D3rn13113 weeps at this thread.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I've eaten plenty of squirrel, having grown up in a huntin', fishin', critter-eatin' family. Best slow-cooked in an electric skillet or crock with plenty of gravy. We also had it with noodles in a recipe that was something like squirrel stroganoff.

briania (briania), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I recommend you go outside and slaughter, cook, and eat whatever first vertebrate you find.

:( it'd probably be some poor cat or dog.

I'm going veggie.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Statistically, it's a pretty good chance that somewhere, J0hn Darni3ll3 is crying about something.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I recommend you go outside and slaughter, cook, and eat whatever first vertebrate you find.

Ok I just did. Updated list:

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've had elk, but I'd like to. Also: caribou, antelope, etc of that family.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The big beetle thingies we served at the restaurant I worked at were just like in that movie, big nasty fucking things you slurped this beefy goodness out of. They were k-salty though.

Ally, explain the cat please.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You know those urban legends about various ethnic restaurants being shut down for using cat and dog meat? They aren't urban legends. I patronized a certain Mexican restaurant almost every day during my sophomore half-year in high school, and they ended up being shut down by the DoH because they were using stray cats insted of buying actual meat, it was found out.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

!

I think I would have been scarred for life.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The restaurant I mentioned before with the big bugs took over a space from a Chinese food place that was busted using not just stray cats but POSSUMS as meat. Fucking POSSUMS MAN.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I seriously feel very ill now.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

This is where I do my little vegetarian superiority dance.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that like the Safety Dance?

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but more self-righteous.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot rabbit off my list. I don't do things that live in water at all.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Ox? Are we counting them as different from cows, etc?

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

...and Silkworms

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

my tally has just gone up to 13, having eaten wild boar and moose in Estonia.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)
