Mac Users Who Change All their Folder Icons - c/d

Classic:

- cute icons that provide a visual cue as to the content
- arranging subfolders in principal folders in pretty patterns

Dud:

- "theming" all folders to look differently, esentially replacing all defaults with a new set of literal icons

And what do you all use the color labels for?

Is that an icon on your desktop?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but it will be an ilx quick link eventually

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

you should design it so that the eyepatch flips up when you pass the cursor over it (revealing a hideous decaying eyeball, of course).

as long as it doesn't sing....

ah i hate when people have software on their computers where every action your perform results in some cute little noise: like closing a window will provoke a "door slam" and clicking a link will provoke some kind of "whoooosh."

The worst was when I was 14 and I used (slightly) overly long song clips to flag events.

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

although back in day (1992? 93?) there was a Mac sound file making the rounds, where a chipper tech support guy would say "Hello this is Vogelback computing helpdesk I'm not wearing any clothes may I help you?" (Vogelback was the Northwestern U. computer services building. Oh, how we used to laugh at that one.)

I turn off all the sounds on my computer -- I figure if I can't figure out what's going on by looking at it, I'm pretty much lost anyway. Except for the startup sound, which I change every so often. Right now: Lionel Ritchie says, "Outrageous!"

Harold Media (kenan), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't really use the color labels. there are other more efficient and transparent ways of organizing files.

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, things would have to get more complicated than I can imagine to necessitate color coding.

Harold Media (kenan), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I could see myself using them to flag stuff -- "this image need cropping", "this hasn't been uploaded", etc

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Back when I used the Macs at the university computer lab (because they had shorter queues), I used to colour-code all my folders. Just because I could.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly. It's a "feature."

My dad's computer used to say "GREETINGS, MASTER" when he started it up. He thought it was hilarious.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and when I got my first PC the "oh no, something has gone wrong" noise was a clip from Father Ted: Father Jack shouting "ARSE! BISCUITS!"

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

when my computer exits it used to plays the guitar epic at the end of the song "Just" by Radiohead.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Radiohead sucks!
