i'm having a mild panic attack and i have to leave for work within the next few minutes

Maybe go to the toilets & wash your fash in cold water. The breathing is prob the best advice though.

Have you had one before? How do they affect you?

Yes, I have, but not of YOUR panic attacks, which are probably rather different. The 'joy' of these is they affect different people in different ways.

I find herbal calms take the edge off the edge of it. They might not stop the attack, but they might blunt it a little.

call in to say you'll be late (or just call the day off), masturbate, go to bed, wake up from nap and eat junk f00d, then either feel relaxed enough to shower again and go - or just go tommorrow. everyone is allowed a mental health day (or three)

Assuming, that is, the panic attack is linked to leaving the house. Sometimes, they can be brought on by a feeling of claustrophobia - that's why we'd need to know more before handing out advice.

Vic, though, that sounds like a nice day to me.

All very good advice. May I also add, standing up straight, walking, stamping your feet, touching any solid object, cooling yourself down, and generally not conceptualising. Your body will insinctively seek out physical responses to the problem.

In the longer term, attempt to at least slightly reduce your intake of all drugs, caffeine, alcohol and sugar.

Finally, for every panic attack you survive, give yourself a pat on the back, and acknowledge what does not kill you makes you stronger. Also, have a laugh about it with some friends.

I get panic attacks but they usually *arise* in the evening. Never at work. Thank god (or whoever).

i went to work. boss isn't even in today and won't be back until thursday (next in chain-of-command is here though).

i'll be ok. having some performance anxiety and feeling self-conscious about being out in a small "bullpen"-style office space where everyone can watch me screw up.

Breathing is the key. Try breathing in on a count of 7 through the nose and exhaling on a count of 11. It's an excess of carbon dioxide in the body that causes the weird panicky symptoms. I used to have regular severe panic attacks but when i addressed the triggers (through CBT) and sorted the breathing out they stopped.

Yup, def. breathing helps. Also, go for a walk right then. I find that changing what I'm doign and my immediate environment helps to clear out my head.

haha yeah, wtf, i was wondering the same thing.

take valerian root. it's calming, and allegedly non-addicting. i take it in high doses when i can't sleep, and in low doses when i have an interview or other anxiety-causing event in the near future.
