no, by the looks of things, although the current mid-atlantic squall over london should be the nadir

i really enjoyed the most miserably intense bit of it earlier because i was in bed with my laptop warming me watching leveson and with no need to leave the house, but even from this cosy perspective the sheer unstopping relentlessness of it becomes depressing

yeah sturm und drang is always best appreciated from indoors

I hated the most miserably intense bit because I was out walking in it.

I got stuck in a spring rain at lunch, with blocks to go. My hair is well and truly fucked for the rest of the day, I think.

Pussy comes in waterfalls. We all know this.

When we first moved in here - in fact the day Neil Young was on TV playing in Hyde Park - we had the most fucking awful downpour that caused the trough on top of the bay window to fill with water and pour into the living room. We spent the evening with towels and buckets trying to mop up the stuff before it got in the electrics. We've had it fixed since obv. but every time it's rained since I've been really terribly anxious. This week hasn't been great.

We nearly went to that NY gig - after seeing Springsteen bring the place down the night before. If we had, we've come back to the worst mess I can imagine. I'm even still anxious about Neil Young's music.

Fucking April. Though. That was August. Fucking rain.

Had to bin my London Olympics umbrella (£14 from M&S), which is coming apart from constant use in the last few weeks.

A giant tree across the road from me fell down sometime last night, right on the roof of an apartment building. The ground has been saturated for days now and it got pretty windy. More rain coming this weekend

Hate it when this happens

when the summer comes and the interminable rain ends. I'm going to start doing all steam intensive cooking outside. I've got an old plastic IKEA table and two plugin induction hobs. Yes outside cooking by the back door is going to become my thing.

Just got in from work. Absolutely soaked through.

Stepped out for a walk just as a thuderstorm rolled in so literally did a Grandpa Simpson 180 back inside. I don't have a good western view from my flat so can be that oblivious to imminent cloudbursts at times.

A 'highlight' earlier today - I was in an outbuilding that we use as a storage area and it started bucketing down. Of course I didn't have a jacket on. Had to wait until the rain let up a bit and then ran back to the office.

Yep, I was woken by it at 2:30am. It felt apocalyptic. Apparently by the early hours it had already become the 13th wettest day this century in this bit of London. Followed by a sweltering day (what is it? 33? 34? 35?).

About five minutes of moderate rain here (Surrey) at around midday.

yesterday was the first time in my life that i was happy to have been caught in the rain

i was caught in it and for a second was like 'this is nice' then it got v heavy and it wasn't nice anymore, so i went into a pub and had a pint until it stopped. that was nice.

as an english person I have booked a summer holiday to bergen where it will be a lovely 15-20 degrees max and rain. gonna wear some TROUSERS AND JACKETS. can't wait.

it was about 10 mins of drizzle. not light drizzle but not heavy enough to count as proper rain.

i got nothin. this weekend back up over 30C.

I'm going down to Devon for a holiday this weekend and it looks like rain every day.

I'm in Plymouth on the way back from France. For about 4 days last week in France, the BBC forecast included thundery showers, whereas in reality it was glorious sunshine with one night-time short storm. so was a bit blasee seeing the forecast here. might tough it out mooching around Plymouth for a bit before driving back home.

Yesterday I had to leave work later than I planned because of a huge belt of rain and thunder that crossed over both the town where I work and the town where I live. OF course after 10 weeks of dry weather I didn't have a jacket. I had an umbrella but eff that with thunderstorms circling around. I managed to avoid getting soaked twice though, arriving home just slightly damp.

So far today there's been light rain but heavy rain is forecast for later this morning and then thunderstorms for the entire afternoon into the evening.

bbc’s current weather provider has a slightly pessimistic algorithm for the day-level forecast symbol. when they change to the met office later this year you will likely see a bit more optimism due to the way the met office calculate that symbol

That's interesting Tracer - I'd definitely noticed that.
It did actually piss down in Plymouth just as we checked out and even when it didn't, I was ambushed by unexpected dampness in the air, so sadly sacked it off and went to see family instead.

BBC forecast is more pessimistic for the whole day but less likely to correctly predict shorter periods of rain. Also the shorter the period of rain the more likely the forecast is to underestimate the amount of rain - yesterday's downpour (water actually started coming through the wall surrounding the front door into the hallway) was shown on the website as 'light rain'.

Rain could've waited just one week longer. Even a couple of days. As such, Dad's 80th birthday bbq was a washout

shorter periods of rain are extremely difficult to predict especially in a place like the UK, where you might be soaked and one street over there’s nothing. apple weather (née darksky) claims to tell you next-hour precipitation down to the minute but it is frequently wrong

The Met Office rain radar website often jumps dramatically from observed to forecast rainfall. To the point that I get a more accurate idea of if it's going to be raining in the next half hour by scrubbing backwards and forwards through the observed rainfall and then eyeballing it.

It’s also really difficult to work out accurately how accurate your forecasts have been, amusingly.

There's a lack of observation stations I think. According to the BBC Weather page, the nearest one to me is 11 miles away. You can get a lot of different weather into 11 miles.

Ah sorry to hear that DL - did you turn it into an indoor BBQ?

I have been told that an increase in the density of UK observations wouldn’t make an appreciable difference to the accuracy* of forecasts but I do t have the chops to explain why!

*due note taken of the trickiness of defining accuracy

it's been a lovely morning and we've been to the beach with the dog. storm approaching now so we're buying snacks in the supermarket and going to hunker down in the chalet and play board games. so all good!
