The x Jeremy moves to x Los Angeles thread:

So, like, it's getting down to brass tacks in the ol' Coombs homestead. I've packed and shipped my car xcountry, mailed my computer, and loaded up all but one change of clothes into a suitcase. I'll be flying to Los Angeles 8/14 and living for a few days without a car in an empty and refrigerator-less apartment on Rosewood. I don't know where anything - anybody - is. I won't have a computer so I can't reliably ask advice on here, but I will try to check email from a library. If anybody has any advice (specifically about buying used furniture, getting to the Ikea in Carson City, farmers' markets, public transportation) they would be encouraged to post it here. Any advice is appreciated. Anything is appreciated. Appreciatively,

Jeremy.

Hurrah! I was about to start a FAP thread for Saturday the 21st and probably still will. Keep the day free! Various of us are already drawing up some vague plans.

Public transportation, sir -- all right here:

http://www.mta.net/

Covers overall bus service as well as the subways. Keep in mind there are other separate bus services around as well (Santa Monica has its own lines), but this will get you the basics all around the county.

The LA Farmers Market as such:

http://www.farmersmarketla.com/

Can you set up a Mapquest link showing where you will be at in the city again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, everyone else to thread -- Chris, Spencer, Vic, Chaki, Luna, Gear!, Dean?, etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Mapquest Link Here

Thx, by the way. Any advice will be handsomely rewarded with ample food, conversation and decent wine upon my settlin' in.

*checks* Ah right, you're right off Western and not all that far from a lot of good stuff, including the Legendary Amoeba Store. Vic lives just off Hollywood, IIRC.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Rad. I have an email from him somewhere, I'll send him over something ASAP.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Meantime, here's Mapquest directions from your spot to the Ikea in Carson.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Stores for used furniture I'm just not familiar with, but here's the LA Craigslist for such stuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, nice. Thanks, Ned.

x j e r e m y (x Jeremy), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yez welcome.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I can't really think of much off the top of my head right now (no coffee) .... I'll keep checking in.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Im not too familiar with the eastside section of things... how far away from that spot is the subway? i hear we have one of those..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

He's near three stops, I think -- I believe Vermont/Santa Monica is the nearest, then there's Vermont/Sunset and Hollywood/Western further away...I'm pretty sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a weekly paper called the Recycler from which you can find a lot of stuff you may need. It's "for sale" ads (among others) that cover a wide range stuff including furniture, electronics, bikes, sports equip, etc. Available in supermarkets for about a buck. They also have an online site.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd think the Ikea in Burbank would be a better bet. Just head up Western til it turns into Los Feliz Blvd, take that to the 5, take the 5 north 4 miles, and there you are.

Also drop by Astroburger at Gower and Melrose and grab some of their onion rings. And hit up those Mexican restaurants along that stretch too, they're all good.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that Chris said that the Burbank Ikea was difficult to get in and out of, thus, the Carson recommendation. I can vouch for the Carson Ikea being always a pleasant experience, but I also live much closer to it than you do, Jeremy.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think Burbank difficulty justifies the extra travel, it's never seemed bad to me. They do let you bring your car in to the small lot directly in front if you buy something large.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd second the Burbank Ikea - you don't want to deal with driving down the entire length of the 110 and then the 405 _that_ soon after moving to LA, even though it's not too horribly crowded that south. But really, you may want to check out the TONS of used furniture stores which are going to be almost walking distance from where you live, right there on Western: that entire stretch from about 1st street to Melrose is just filled with assorted, funky, often-Korean-or-Armenian owned furniture shops. And you can bargain in them too! I got a great deal on my futon right there in MTA Furniture, I believe (or maybe it's TMA?), and my red cherry desk that wouldn've cost hundreds more elsewhere, in another store around the Lemon Grove intersection.

Of course, nothing beats Ikea when you're in the need for, well.. Ikean "stuff" (and you know what this means).

This is a cool neighborhood! Kind of where Hollywood and Koreatown intersect. It's like 10 mins from me; I'm more in central Hollywood past Vine street. I have 2 friends that live real close to you, off Western around Lexington (but I rarely see them - those kind of friends). How long are you going to be living in this area?

Western will be the main artery of your 'hood - you will take it north to get to the MHNY (major highway near you - the 101), and eventually it hits Sunset and Hollywood Blvd, and then Los Feliz, which is another neighborhood near you that wold be worth exploring once you have time (just take a right onto Sunset, then a left onto Vermont). To get to USC, you want to either take 101 south, and get off on the Exposition or Adams exits, or just take Vermont avenue south, and then make a left on Jefferson; this latter route is definitely recommended during peak highway traffic hours (and driving through the dirtyness of Vermont south of Wilshire is always fun & colorful). If you take Western south from where you live, you'll hit Wilshire Blvd, and see this striking green Art-Deco theatre called The Wiltern, where a number of nice shows are held regularly. That entire stretch of Western southwards, as well as around Wilshire, is the heart of K-town, and is crammed with interesting Korean/Asian eateries. I know there is this one coffee/ boba shop (i hope you like boba since there are 6 million boba shops right there) that is open 24 hours right there on Western, I think south of 3rd, which is noteworthy as few places are open past 2 in LA; I've never been but driven past and always see hip Asian 20-somethings hanging out there.... you'll probably turn into one within a week!

Happy exploring - I'd say that aside from a Thomas Guide, the Lonely Planet guide to Los Angeles would be essential purchasing. I think the latest edition is still the one I have, the green one with the car bouncing on a beach on the cover: easily found at the USC bookstore.

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

a Thomas Guide

Oh god yes, why didn't I think of mentioning this earlier. Their site here but there's no reason you shouldn't be able to find one easily enough at a good bookstore. Get the one that covers LA County and you're gold.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I have anything to add to the fine advice above.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks all for the advice - I'm signing offline now to finish packing and scmoozing with my increasingly nostalgic family. Won't be online much until my 'puter arrives on Tuesday, and perhaps longer pending innernet connex, so if there's any advice or later thoughs please email me. And I'll try to respond more rapidly than I did to the last batch of missives.

Audi for now,

Jeremy.

Hey, Jeremy.. If you need bookcases, I have four of the Ikea "Mast" basic generic white ones that you can have. They're free if you can come get them - they're in Long Beach and you'll need a truck.

Actually, the offer stands for any LA ILX'er that needs bookcases. I'm clearing out and I'd rather give them to someone here first before I make the offer on Craig's List.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 13 August 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ya'll better take good care of my Jeremy.
