The Natural Law Party

This group have cropped up (they were yogic flying natch) on another thread which prompts me to ask - what the fuck?

The stood in every seat in the 1992 General Election, and a got a party political broadcast. I looked and discoverd their candidates were all from Skelmersdale, which has a weird Village of the damned TM cultish feel to it.

So, in this thread, share you thoughts, and hopefully experiences of Transcendental Meditation, Skelmersdale, the Natural Law party and Yogic Flying.

George Harrison and Mike Love................ that's all I'm prepared to say at this point

the Yogic Flying looked great, the electorate just hates fun

A girl I dated twice's uncle was a candidate. He lived with his mom.

I hate fun too. I thought they were a bunch of freaking menkos. I did try to yogic fly though, which made me convinved they were menkos beyond saving, and that Skelmersdale was a bad thing.

I don't like this kind of thing in my country - things like this and the Penial Church in Brentwood scare me. We do wifeswapping, bouts of sub-fascism and terrible outbursts of crap sentiment, but areas full of organised funsters doing God-type fun is just not British.

Oh it is

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't consider villages to be British.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

British = shrug

I would vote for them. I think I did.

I actually had no idea they existed outside of Canada until now.
I voted for them once. I think I was put under a spell by Doug!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I vaguely recall something about them not being cute and eccentric but actually quite sinister, much like Patrick Moore.

There HUGE money making rip off artists. And we are in shit if they find their way here. Depak Chopra, inventor of all things Quantum SomethingorOther was made their Lord High Lord Of Imortality of Earth and Heaven or some wacky title like that.
Sadly Doug Henning was their Deputy Leader in Canada and gave up magic performing for their 'real' magic. In the early 90s, they ran more candidates then the Reform but quite thankfully didn't get a seat. I think Doug managed about 1000 in his Toronto riding.
The leader of the thing owns a chain of hotels, a consulting firm and is worth a fair number of millions at last count.

In high school we had to do 10 hours of forced volunteerism (I know), so out of protest I volunteered at the Natural Law Party... this was in '92. They had me make phone calls and hand out literature... Other than the wacky "if the entire world prays the world's problems will disappear" bit they seemed fairly ok. I don't think I managed to get them a single vote, though, since I threw all their flyers in the trash. And I still voted Democrat.

Apparently Doug also ran for a seat in the general elections in Engerland out of Lancashire.

We usually have a Natural Law candidate on the gubernatorial ballot in Iowa, due to the influence of Fairfield, a community of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi followers in the Southeast part of the state. They run the local government down there, and have established a school system, including Maharishi University.

The Maharishis tend to be industrious, friendly, upscale types, and people tend to have a favorable opinion of them around here, despite some ridicule over a college curriculum that includes "Levitation" as a course of study. Their high school tennis team is a powerhouse program, winning the state small school championship many times.

The song "Fairfield" by local folk-laureate Greg Brown gives a pretty fair snapshot of the local view:

"There's a whole lotta money in Fairfield, Fairfield, Fairfield,
Whole lotta money in Fairfield,
I'm gonna get me some.

Them floaters they come down here, down here, down here,
Them floaters they come down here,
Fix the whole town up.

If the floaters come to your town, your town, your town,
Floaters come to your town,
You might wanna stick around.

They meditate and get focused, focused, focused,
They do a little hocus pocus,
And the money just rolls in.

They know all 'bout computers, your New Age, and foreign food,
They do all that real good,
Fairfield's where to go.

Mount Pleasant isn't really, really, really,
Mount Pleasant isn't really,
And neither is Burlington.

Well, there ain't no money in Eldon, Pulaski, Keosauqua,
There's a little bit in Ottumwa,
But it's tighter than a drum.

Ah, the Quads are full of dope fiends, blown whores, methamphetamines.
Ball-capped boys and gambling,
And all this sort of stuff.

Fairfield used to be a shithole, a shithole, a shithole,
Fairfield used to be a shithole,
But take a look at it now.

There's a whole lotta money in Fairfield, Fairfield, Fairfield,
Whole lotta money in Fairfield,
I'm gonna get me some."

There is a natural law party in NZ, which does all the yogic flying, everyone meditating on peace on rotation stuff. But also, cousin once removed was a candidate and he is a very christian, very principled GP: one of the purely nicest people I know. The only person my Grandpa will talk with about the fact he's dying of cancer for example.

Don't think he's in it for the money.
