the ILX names mix tape

I wondered how many songs I had in my collection with only names as their titles that matched up with ILX names. Enough to put together a good comp, as it happens - 42, and I imagine there are plenty of others. This was sparked by buying the Saint Etienne album that's utilised below recently, then just listening to the Lolita Storm track also mentioned below. There may be a couple of names you don't recognise - that's because they are the real names of posters here. I won't reveal who, in case they would rather I didn't. I don't know if I'll ever make this tape, but here's the shortlist if I do want to...

Anna - Arthur Alexander
Sam - Boss Hog
Richard - Killdozer
Deanna - Nick Cave
Toby - Chi-Lites
Sebastian - Cockney Rebel
James - Lloyd Cole
Lucy - Kevin Coyne
Matthew - Daintees
Rosemary - Scott Walker
Sara - Bob Dylan
Kim - Eminem
Mikey - Daddy Freddy
Maria - Marvin Gaye
Jesse - Grandmaster Flash
Joe - PJ Harvey
Emma - Hot Chocolate
Christine - Walter Horton
Ed - Ice-T
Victoria - Kinks
Penelope - Byron Lee
Suzy - Lolita Storm
Jodie - Rod Stewart
Tommy - Mekons
Mary, Mary - Monkees
Felicity - Orange Juice
Rachel - Ovuca
Julia - Pavlov's Dog
Norman - Max Romeo
Stevie - Saint Etienne
Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel
Laura - Frank Sinatra
Jeanne - Smiths
Ann - Stooges
Scotty - Sub Nation
Johnny - Suicide
Charlie - T. Rex
Liza - Art Tatum
Diana - Mac Thornhill
Mandy - Fats Waller
Michael - Geno Washington
Paul - Xzibit
(also Mark'll Sink Us by the Fall is so very close to one poster's full name, including his middle initial, that it warrants a mention too)(oh, and it's on ILE because I still don't really go to ILM)

Kate - Ben Folds Five

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember, nothing but the name, otherwise I could have listed literally hundreds, and it's too easy. Therefore Danny Boy is excluded. We could have Daniel by Elton John, of course - I don't have it, so didn't list it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Re the sinkah: You probably don't have Shed Seven's "Mark"?

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Del Shannon has a "Jody" song which has the correct spelling

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Mission of Barima?

Nope, doesn't work, does it...

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

In my folderful of unfinished song-sketch type things I have several files working-titled after the ILX folks they remind me of: "stevem" is fake hardcore, "felicitrex" is like fake schaffel Monochrome Set, "garenth" is electro, etc. There's also "anna," "micciomilkshake," "bootybootyskidmore," and others I won't mention.

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record the "skid" refers to a skiddy-sounding synth sound that I intended to put more of in the finished song, not anything having to do with the booty part.

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracy - Mogwai

(humf) ;P

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

and choosing "sara" by bob dylan over fleetwood mac is insulting us all

purple patch (electricsound), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Joshua Kaddison 'Jess(e)'

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know the name of the Blonde Redhead song that goes "X...X...Alex...", but maybe it's "Alex." It always sounds like she's saying "ILX" to me. I am a nerd. (BTW, guys, there are like 700 songs called "Emily.")

Even though I think it's technically called "(I Wanna Be) Kate!"

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 13 August 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Sugar Minott - Oh Mr DC.

It's a great 70s reggae tune that I only heard courtesy of Tim Hopkins. I've since made it the last track on four separate compilation CDs I've made for people.

purple patch (electricsound), Saturday, 14 August 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 14 August 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Frank Zappa- Here Comes the Gear, Lads

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got an Ultramarine track called 'Weird Gear' if that's any consolation to you.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds fitting.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a Runrig song called "Alba".

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that's why I'm called Alba, in fact.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(I hate my parents)

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Eisbär!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(by Grauzone!!)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Alba" just makes me think of the secretary beleaguered by an obviously jacked up Nicolas Cage in Vampire's Kiss.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, well, if I had chosen the name myself that would have been the image I would have been striving for.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have strove for this image:

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Saturday, 14 August 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the one I'm trying to shake off.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 14 August 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahh well done! My ego is back.

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I can only hope!

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any songs named simply "Curtis"?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(I actually got my name not from a song but something else of course.)

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I dread threads like these because inevitably they lead to bad puns of my name.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

on my name even.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"PROUD MARY (RONAN ON THE RIVER)"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I blatantly and obviously asked for that.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)
